Do you think the Wii is overpriced, under-priced or is the amount you pay for it the right amount? It's $250 at the moment in the US I believe.

Nintendo make profits from every console they sell. I think MS is now getting profit from the 360 too but I believe Sony is still losing money on every PS3 sold due to the hardware still being very expensive.

I personally like how Nintendo have decided to go for the affordable, fun, new way to play games but I think the price of the Wii should be about $150. The only reason they have it at $250 is because both Sony and MS's consoles are ridiculously expensive. I think Nintendo should start catering more to the consumers needs. I'm sure they could afford to drop the price a bit but I'm assuming they won't because it's selling very well.

That's just my thought. How much do you think the Wii should actually cost? Is it overpriced/under-priced or is the price just right?

According to multiple sources months ago, it costs more than $150 to manufacture a Wii.

I think the peripherals are too expensive, not the console. Although, I wouldn't mind seeing the Wii at $199.

Yeah, I don't understand your point though. Are you saying the price is OK because it costs a lot to make the Wii?

Since wii is bundled with a £40 game and £40 for nunchucks and wiimote I think the price is dead on and this thread irrelevant.

I'm saying that Nintendo ONLY makes games. They can't afford to take losses on their hardware like MS or Sony - which have other sources of income.

It should cost less than it costs to manufacture. Sony and Microsoft both take big losses on their consoles, knowing that they will make that money back selling games, controllers, accessories etc., yet people just accept the fact that Nintendo makes a profit on every machine they sell.

$250 is about the right frame of price, that what people generally want to pay for something of that nature, it the same price as the gamecube back in that gen. No higher shifting of price, both reasonable to profit for them and money spending for us. It not suppose to be high end like the other so that price sounds workable to me.

Why does everyone seem to be oblivious to the fact that Nintendo ONLY makes games? Compared to Sony and MS, both of which are conglomerates?

I also like the fact that Nintendo only has one SKU, rather than two or three like the competition. Simplicity is always better, in my opinion.

I don't think it would be a major thing if they lost a bit on each console. You said yourself that it costs $150 to manufacture right? Why not make the console $199 then? I mean, I know it's selling like crazy at its current price point but I think it could still be cheaper, so why not do what's better for consumers? I'm not justifying the PS3/360 prices, mind you.

I can understand that many like having the options available though so 2 SKU's isn't necessarily bad.

I said it cost more than $150 to manufacture. Some estimates put it as high as $211.

I especially hate what Microsoft is doing. Before the end of this generation, there will be 6+ variations of the Xbox 360. This is a slap in the face for early adopters, and I don't appreciate it at all. This is why I'm against multiple SKUs when they are sold early on the consoles life.

To say there will be 6+ variations is just stupid. I agree its a dumb move on Microsofts part to put the elite out, but they did tell us that they would add HDMI later on, so nobody got cheated.

Why is saying 6+ variations stupid? We already have three, and another one is coming later this year: with the 65nm processors.

If they'd done that - at this point, with 6 million consoles sold, they would have lost $60,000,000 on the hardware already. Granted, they would have made alot of it back with software - but Nintendo ONLY makes games. They have to make profit on everything they do - because they are a specialty company.

I agree. I like how Nintendo/Sony don't generally release something as major like the Elite.

eg. DS to DS Lite is more so a redesign than an upgrade.
PS2 to PS2 slimline is again basically a redesign.

The Elite adds far too much and should have been available from day one. That's why I agree Nintendo having only one version of the Wii is a great move.

The problem is that the Elite doesn't add to much. They should have included the 65nm processors, wi-fi, and possibly HD-DVD (although HDDVD would be a stretch to include) I just don't think Microsoft should be releasing this unfinished system, the Elite, just yet. If they want to cater to hardcore gamers, they should include wi-fi: at least. I still have my DS fat, and my PS2 and I don't feel cheated by Nintendo or Sony.

I realize that which is why I think it's great Nintendo decided to go against the expensive hardware route like Sony/MS have done.

But you can't seriously tell me losing $10 is a lot. Anyway, $210 is a high estimate for what the Wii costs to make. This link says it costs $160.

In any case, I'm more than certain they could lower the price if they want. I think the DS is/was great value for money at launch and now but I think they are being cautious with the Wii due to the failure of the GC but I don't think that justifies them overpricing the console.

Me too. I have a DS/PS2 (not the redesigns) and I couldn't care less about the DS Lite or PS2 Slim because I'm not missing out on anything major.

Elite is too expensive for what you're getting and I'm assuming a lot of current 360 owners would be annoyed with it. Nintendo made the best decision by going with 1 SKU. They're doing what's right for the consumers. I just wish they'd lower the price a bit and then I could honestly say Nintendo is aiming solely to please consumers.

Big difference between $200 and $250.

I think $200 would have been OK for them to do at launch judging by the estimations of how much the Wii costs to manufacture.

if that estimate of $153 was correct, then $200 probably would have been the better price.

The highest estimates for the manufacturing price have been $210 but most are between $140 - $180.

I've always thought Nintendo are great at their prices for their systems (I especially thought that with the DS and still think that) but the Wii could be cheaper, if Nintendo want to fully please consumers that is.

Without the Wiimote, Wii Sports, Wifi, and the small size I would expect it to cost $150 alone. But adding the Wiimote which isn't a standard controller, Wiisports, Wifi, and the reduction in size are all things that cost money. The price is fair to me unless you don't like Wiisports.

[QUOTE="BuryMe"]i think $200-$250 is a reasonable price for the wii.the-very-best

Big difference between $200 and $250.

I think $200 would have been OK for them to do at launch judging by the estimations of how much the Wii costs to manufacture.

Well Wii is $200, but it comes with Wii sports

Based on supply and demand it should be costing more around $300 right now.  What kind of crazy business sells things at cost?  Aside from charities?

I read somewhere that Nintendo makes a 50 dollar profit off of each sell. Wii costs like 180$-190$ to make. So, that PoS of a game Wii Sports costs like 10-15 bucks to make. Do you people really think a game like Wii Sports is worth 50 bucks?
