It's been around forever, and it's still a niche market. Not only in terms of sales has it been surpassed by Blu-Ray, but even the now discontinued HD-DVD outsold Digital Distribution. In terms of movies, it's also highly inconvienent unlike music or picture digital distribution.

Not to mention the new internet bandwidth caps that ISPs are now adopting in order to keep download speeds consistant for all users.

it hasnt been around foreever....nor is it a niche market.

and im not exacly clear on how Blue-ray on HD-DVD is outselling Digital Distrobution. Consoles dont even offer DD for full games...so your comparison is not only completly irrelevent but entirely made up.

When I buy something I want the physical product in hand. I will never buy anything that is digitally distributed at any time.

I think DD is the future, just not in the form it is now. They need to make it transferable. They need to make one unified format so all players can play the files (this wmv, mp4, divx mess is BS). They need to make it so if you lose the file you can get it again AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT. If the industry starts taking those big steps, it will indeed be a great way to get your favorite media.

Lower prices for games and the ability never to lose your game, movie, application due to wear, accident, or act of God?

Yeah that's horrible

Heh, I heard people complaining about FFVII's download size on PSN store. It was 1 gig, and a PSX game. Can you imagine how long it would take to download a PS2 or PS3 game, anywhere from 5 to 50 gigs worth of data?

Uh, prices of DD are the same as retail stores. If your storage device gets wiped, not only do you lose 1 title, you lose all of them.

Isn't that the case with most DD now? Certianly on the PC it is, with Steam or Impulse (stardock). I agree with unified formats 100% though. For those opposed to DD, I bet you won't be thinking the same in 10 years, it will be the norm.

Digital Distribution also makes piracy even easier than it already is. This can only be combated with extreme DRM.

Next thing you know, consumers will be asking for Digital Distribution without DRM.

Same here. I absolutely hate the idea of DD, unless it's a cheap $5 Wiiware or Arcade game. If I'm shelling out $50-60 I better have a physical copy.

They don't. Steam has limited support. Do you know how easy it is to pirate a game off of Steam? (EG. Empire: Total War, Battlestations: Pacific, etc...)

Its clear from this thread that you have absolutely zero idea what you're talking about. If you want to reasonably debate something thats fine, but you shuld read up on a topic before you start.

there is nothing like having a hard disc copy of a game or movie and digital distribution will never take over ever for that very reason, It for sure has a place in the market but will never ever take over hard disc copies of games or movies. The only possible way for DD to take a huge chunk of the market is to be a lot cheaper, and that doesnt even happen with steam at all, most games cost exactly the same amount as a hard disc copy of the game so f that.

Has nothing to do with being a steam game has to do with being a PC game. DD will no doubt take over. Look at MP3 sales compared to retail CDs. The country is just waiting on faster internet. With verizon fios you're talking about downloading a 6gb file in less than 30 minutes. Soon as fios takes over for dsl/cable DD will explode. I say another 5 or 6 years. Companies can't wait either, much cheaper to just through your product online.

I believe it's the future as a result of human history. We are lazy and always looking for easier ways of life. It may not become standard in my lifetime, but I think it will be eventually. I contribute to HD DVD sales now. Everyone needs to unload these and they do so at a fraction of DVD and blu ray costs. It's awesome to get 5 movies in HD for about 25-30 bucks.

I always laugh at those who don't believe digital download will be the primary mass-distribution method for all forms of digital media going forward. THey're like the Sony executives, still trying to peddle their Walkmans in the face of iPod stealing all their business.

If you don't believe digitally-distributed media is the future, what are you doing on the Internet? You should go back to magazines and newspapers to get your information.

I was talking about the PC, tbh (and how the future will likely be) With Steam I can sign in on another machine and download anything I've paid for I think. Same goes for XBL doesn't it? (although I've NEVER tried)

EDITED the never in!

yes you can

and to the guy who think he knows somthing about piracy steam makes it alot harder to pirate a game its possible but not easy. steam is a perfect place too sell games because of the 20+ million users and no physical copies mean better pricing aswell as opening the market up for the little devs who dont have alot of money.

to awser another think somone said if you hard drive gets wipped you can allways re downlaod a game can you do that if your cd breaks? or you missplace it

FiOS has no bandwidth caps of any kind, and Verizon has no reason to implement them at all.

[QUOTE="PoppaGamer"][QUOTE="blue_hazy_basic"] Isn't that the case with most DD now? Certianly on the PC it is, with Steam or Impulse (stardock). I agree with unified formats 100% though. For those opposed to DD, I bet you won't be thinking the same in 10 years, it will be the norm.bingbaocao
If I buy a XBLA game for my 360 I cannot take that game anywhere else.

i think you can if you take out the harddrive

No you get a trial version of the game when you plug the HDD into another 360.

When I buy something I want the physical product in hand. I will never buy anything that is digitally distributed at any time.

[QUOTE="Bluray001"][QUOTE="nmaharg"] Has nothing to do with being a steam game has to do with being a PC game. Companies can't wait either, much cheaper to just through your product online.nmaharg
With FIOS comes bandwidth caps. Heck, even the higher speed cable companies are capping bandwidth.

Not true. I use verizon fios and there is no cap. Time warner tried to apply a cap to there cable internet not too long ago and got shot down.

Verizion FIOS is a very niche market right now. They can't afford to use bandwidth caps. When FIOS becomes mainstream, just like cable has right now, they will use Bandwidth caps, just like Cable does right now.

I find it funny people say they hate DD, yet they most likely have itunes installed with a bunch of MP3s on there PC/Iphone/Ipod/zune/psp do I need to go on. Steam is slowly becoming the itunes of gaming. Itunes sells more music through DD than all retail stores combined. "But, but DD is the fail...."

Downloading music is convienent. It takes seconds. Unlike games which takes hours.... and TrueHD movies, which take a day or two.

The only reason Cable is trying to implement bandwidth caps is because cable companies have oversold their limited last-mile network capacity and they need to keep people in check to make their flawed business models work. With FiOS, not only is Verizon not overselling their last-mile capacity, but if last-mile demand ever becomes a problem, Verizon can expand capacity practically at will, so it will never need to keep customers in check by imposing bandwidth caps.

thats because iphones/ipods/zunes and psp's are portable... imagine having a pile of cds at the backseat of your car or in your briefcase or whatever... Gaming on the other hand (besides portables) you have your home theatre and its just better to have a hardcopy... + What if u want to give ur friend a game to try...hows DD gonna solve that

Thats why I said when fios becomes more available. I downloaded mass effect 2 weeks ago off steam in 7 minutes. I remeber when it took that long to download a song. Like it or not times are changing, and DD is the future of all media.
