Hated it even more... What a peice of garbage this game is... The only reason im making this thread is because I want logical discussion and understanding as to how this game got the praise it did. forget the gamespot 10, just over all how did no one call this game out on the terrible broken gameplay the horrible cell phone interface and the wonky infuriating physics? I know its years after the fact and GTA4 has been eclipsed by dozens upon dozens of games, but truly this is one of the worst games I have played this generation. I gave it an 8.5 when it released... its way worse now. anyone agree? I know im not taking crazy pills.

I have a hard time believing that it's one of the worst games you've played this generation.

I wouldn't say it's a piece of garbage. It was the starting point for this gen of the GTA series. It's just like GTA III in a sense. BoGT is really awesome.

GTA4 sort of struck me as a glorified tech demo. It was as if Rockstar spent so much time and effort just getting this thing running on consoles that they forgot to make it fun. Certainly the game is a stunning technical achievement, and I have always appreciated it as such; however, although it's not "garbage," it definitely lacked the over-the-top humor and action of previous titles. Red Dead Redemption took what Rockstar learned, I think, from the development of GTA4 and improved it accordingly. The engine feels much more sharp and polished. Graphically it's much better. Even if you didn't like the game, there was much more to do in the game aside from the main story. I imagine the next GTA will be a fantastic return to the cartoonish, over-the-top action and mayhem that made Vice City and San Andreas some of the most entertaining games ever made. Like I said, GTA4 was a tech demo.

I hated the game also. Horrible story, horrible character development, horrible voice acting, lots of technical faults, broken hand to hand combat, annoying friends/girlfriend, auto-targeting system sucks, manual targeting is wonky, extremely repetitive mission structure, camera doesn't center behind cars making all right hand turns a leap of faith, etc. I was baffled that the game was well-received. I've attained 100% completion in every game in the series including expansions. I was super excited about the game. And when I got my hands on GTA IV, it made me want to vomit. The only way it was a success was in scale, and even that didn't come without frame rate drops, pop in, random texture glitches, etc. One of the worst games I've ever played.

Um, I'm not a GTA fan at all. I stop playing all GTA games after like maybe an hour. But I like GTA IV. I was so impressed by the fact that I could sit there and browse the internet and watch their in-game television set and actually be entertained. I could go and watch a stand up set by a digitized Kat Williams in the comedy club, or listen to talk radio. There was plenty of stuff to do, plenty of places to go, a massive city, an expansive, open-ended story full of choices and completely non-linear gameplay. I'm not a fan of open-ended games, but GTA IV was an excellent game. To say otherwise is to miss the point.... This is one bandwagon I'm definitely not jumping on...

I loved the game, the shooting is super fun, the crashes in the cars and the physics of people flying away its great. Its very randomic game in terms of what can happen you see cars flying or people getting killed in different ways every time i think is a masterpiece of tecnical achievements thats why it has so many great scores in every game site. its super realistic and you can create mayhem if you want.

Worst game I've played in five years, on the PC. So buggy, unoptimized. Killed any respect I might have had for Rockstar, it shows that they really don't care about their PC fanbase and only are willing to work for their consolites.

I liked GTA4 up until the plot twist in Algonquin with the GF. Otherwise I have no idea how it scored a 10 here or anywhere else. All the characters except Niko are annoying, the mission design is terrible because of a lack of checkpoints, and cops are so annoyingly aggressive at times it just makes me want to get arrested. I'm not one to complain about difficulty, but GTA4's difficulty isn't the "omg this is so hard I want to beat it so bad though," its the "omg this is so frustrating this isn't even fun screw this I quit" difficulty.

The attention to detail in the city was awesome, and it was a great technical achievement. It's just that they forgot to make the most important part of the game fun. I wouldn't really say the game is nonlinear when a great deal of missions force you to drive somewhere and shoot a bunch of people, then drive back. Even worse, they failed to make the linearity fun with the lack of checkpoints and the somewhat unintuitive shooting.

I enjoyed it more than any GTA I've played I would have to say. Comes close to 2 though. I loved how unique the vehicles were and how they handled, the combat was much improved, the world was so much more detailed, and most importantly the gameplay actually kept me coming back for more.

It improved greatly in some areas. The AI isn't as downright retarded as it was in previous games (remember the sped-up cars in San Andreas), and it seemed like they actually took a step back and tried to make the features in the game work instead of just throwing in as many half-assed features as possible like they did in SA. I do dislike the lack of proper character customisation, but the combat is better (though still far from remarkable) and the missions are more interesting and less quirky. They should've added a checkpoint system as there's still too much outdated. So in the end I think it's the most polished GTA (save the poor PC optimisation) and the most mature one gameplay-wise, yet for some reason it's just not as fun as GTA III and SA, which were quirky, buggy games like pretty much everything else produced by Rockstar, but compensated with tons and tons of charm. GTA IV lacks the random in-your-face humour from the previous games, and takes itself way too seriously with Niko Bellic's terrible character development, lousy radio stations and an annoying buddy system.

I gave it an 8.5 in the end (you can read my user review in my profile) because it does take the GTA series to a new level, yet compensates a lot in terms of charm and fun.

Agreed. It was the reason I bought a next-gen console (just like GTAIII was the reason I bought a PS2) but when I got it I didn't think it was that bad because it was the first game I had played in ages. Like you i went back to it recently and couldn't get over how much it sucked. Like somebody said previously itt, yes it's a huge technical achievement and the amount of things happening at any given moment in the city is impressive; but it's just not FUN. Story wise, the missions are disgustingly repetitive. Gameplay wise, the controls are way too slow and clunky (sensitivity high is like low sensitivity for other games) and the framerate is horrible. It's a very overrated game, I'm with you 100% I just hope R* dump this style and go back to making games like San Andreas/Vice City but it's unlikely based on how much they've invested in making that engine.

I did think Niko was a very original and refreshing character though.

It takes getting used to, but after you get over that it's a very good game a 9/10 in my book. I hated it just as much as you at first and then I stopped playing for a few months and when I came back I finished the game and the story was amazing as well. Also after trying Saints Row 2 that made me realize how amazing GTA4 really was lol

I liked it, but it's far from the flawless gem some critics made it out to be. The gameworld was impressive, but clunky combat, campaign stretched out with boring missions and lots of annoying design choices can't be ignored.

You don't even need checkpoints it auto saves when you beat a mission and if you fail you start at the beginning of the mission. If you had checkpoints it would probably be the easiest game in the world. This is the only gta game i beat without cheats.

i wouldnt go as far to say its garbage but imo its one of the most overrated games this gen. What happens to GTA been fun to explore around. Instead gta4 has you running up and down doing errands let alone repetitive missions and trees that obviously can withstand a car crashing on them with 100mph

No GTA game has ever had checkpoints except the GTA IV DLC. It was just being traditional.

GTA 4 is one of the most detailed, most atmospheric game this gen. Far greater than any other GTA game including Vice City and San Andreas. Yes, greater than San Andreas and Vice City. It also had the deepest, well connect story out of all of them as well. I know, im one of the few in gamespot forums that thinks GTA4 deserved every bit of praise it got from gaming websites/journalist.

I never played the originals, sorry. GTA4 has much more problems with it's missions than lack of checkpoints, though.

Once I figured out how to handle the driving, the game opened up a lot for me. Only a handful of missions drove me to rage with the lack of checkpoints, but it did feel good getting past tough ones, like the often mentioned bank robbery. For me the pros clearly outweigh the cons.

While it has a fair share of problems, it's a terrific piece of work when you look at the big picture. There haven't been many games this gen that managed to be as absorbing or immersive. People need to actually judge the game based on what it was trying to be, rather than what the player wanted it to be.

Yeah big step down from San Andreas, bad checkpoint system (basically not a checkpoint system at all), annoying friends that call you all the time, having to drive or take a cab to every mission, it was a nightmare.

Yeah, i consider San Andreas to be the pinnacle of the GTA series, trully a incredibly fun game. But only for now. Just like GTA III first appeared, and like VC and SA improved on it, the same will happen, hopefully, with GTA IV, and with later installments improve on it..

I dislike the game due to its way of taking itself to seriously, and fails. No fun at all.. i couldnt even finish it. Unfortunatelly, though i really tried to like it.. , i can't help but say to my self that this is the worst GTA game.
