I also originally scored it at 8.5, but if I were to score it now it would be considerably lower. After playing the two expansions, didn't like them much at all, I'm done with the series.

That is because the gameplay is getting old and repetitive. I would expect GTA 5 to be completely different.
Yea the whole cover system in GTA4 is soooo broken. And the game needs more checkpoints.i dont see how it got a 10 its more like a 8.5 or somewhere along there
I liked some of the characters, but I just didn't like Niko much. I mean how do you expect me to like a character that doesn't want his life to revolve around violence anymore, only to keep continue doing it as time goes on.

I'm amazed at how so many people did not get this. It wasn't like it was hard to figure out :?
I agree the game is ABYSMAL. I rate it a 1/10, no joke. The graphics are so ugly I couldn't look at my TV without getting a headache (Honestly, so blurry it made me sick)
Gameplay was absolutely terrible, and the camera angles were frustrating.
Might give it a try on PC though, with mods and PROPER graphics and not 640x480 64 X A (Aliasing, no not Anti-Aliasing, but 64 times ALIASING)

Because it's world is living and breathing. It's just so detailed. The dialogue is great. The charectar driven story is awesome and so is the voice acting. Gameplay is awesome too. I think it's one of the best games ever. Saints Row on the other hand, is garbage IMO
It's the greatest computer game made up to this point. Perhaps your playing the PS3 version, I didn't like that one either.
And wow that mod above me is awesome.
The story is the same as anyother GTA and that's good. But the world isn't as great as the SA world. That's why it's overrated for me.Because it's world is living and breathing. LOL I was expecting a change of heart , which would be the base of all my post , damn you!Haha anyways , this happened with me in Yakuza 3 , only that when I played it again I got super addicted , and loved the game , researched about the sequel and tried a plat.Go figure. :P

I think SA world is great because it doesn't feel like your on "The Trueman Show" if you know what I mean, where you are on an island and stuck on it. SA felt like a real place and is a technical marvel. But I liked GTA4's world because it felt alive.

I agree. Niko came from a life in Russia of violence and corruption. He came to America for the "American Dream" which was meant to be a fresh start. His new life however, turned out to be just like, if not worse, than his old one. I found it amazing and Niko is easily the most likeable main GTA charectar.
Niko isn't the most sympathetic GTA character to date. It would've been ironic if he got caught up in this violent world and was forced to play along with it. But half of the game he was killing people he didn't even know for money, and going by the apparent nonchalance with which he accepted every job, it didn't seem like his conscience worried him at all, except if you count these random depressive whiney rants he has in the car with other characters. The 'but he got da debt' excuse didn't do it for me either.

Frankly it's a little disturbing that a lot of people weren't able to see the irony in the story and protagonist. Especially when they made it very obvious. It wasn't bad, I could see why people like it so much but it just didn't have what I look for in GTA games, I myself preferred the older GTAs, heck I even had more fun with Saints Row 2 even though the characters and the story of that game were both abysmal.
It wasn't bad but it was a massive disappointment for me after San Andreas. I honestly couldn't give GTA4 a 9.0 let alone a 10.
lack of checkpoint itself makes it a huge letdownfunsohngarrghh! This alone makes me want to rip my hair out! The fact there is checkpoints in rdr though, is a positive sign for the next gta.
It's far from terrible. I enjoyed it alot at first, but after a while it started to get boring and I sold it before I even finished it. 8.5. Red Dead Redemption was a BIG improvement.
Wasn't that bad, sure unlike Vice City and San Andreas it took me a while to decide to sit down and finish it, but i sorta prefer Ballad of Gay Tony its more like San Andreas mission wise.
So it wasn't San Andreas 2, get over it, GTA has grown up a bit. If you don't like it, go play Saints Row.
i don't hate it, but i hate how people call it the best gta game when san andreas and vice city are far, FAR, better. better stories and much more things to do.
its also annoying that you NEED to get the EFLC to get the true ending and understand the story.
bulgarin is the one guy who Nico could never touch, yet is the reason for all of his problems in LC. like 90% of the events in the game happen just because of those stupid diamonds.
No GTA game has ever had checkpoints except the GTA IV DLC. It was just being traditional.

If it needs to handicap the player with something so stupid as removing checkpoints to be hard, then something is wrong with the game. That's not challenge, that's just frustrating.
Upparoom
I never played the originals, sorry. GTA4 has much more problems with it's missions than lack of checkpoints, though.
Adding checjubg point isn'tall about tradition and giving players a challenge, as another poster said earlier, if you have to remove or add a half-assed check point system just to increase a game's challenge, then you got more serious problem in the game to worry about. This is why Saint's Row 2 is SSSSSSOOOOO much better than GTA 4's mission structure. There is nothing more frustrating in GTA 4 than do all the complicated "prep" missions in a mission, get them done, drive the truck to the tunnle, block it, get into a fight with a police, then just before completing a mission, dies, and have to start ALL OVER again! Yes, you can simply punch up the cell phone to restart immediately, but what good is that since you LOOSE all of your previous ammo used up, and have to get some from the gun shop.......? GTA 4 problems AIN't its techical merit, but so many other little details. It's like R* and take 2 spend 3 and a half year developing the game's engine and city, but only 6 months on the gameplay itself!
People in the real world loved it, the game sold like hotcakes It just wasnt fun... I admire the world and effort that went into the game, but it just wasnt fun... sorry. I've really really tried!!!!It's a real shame that people don't appreciate GTAIV. Rockstar really worked hard on that game, it's the best GTA game. It's not deserving of a 10, but it was really damn good.
