I have no doubt in my mind that the PS3 will beat the 360, here is why..

this thread is about the long term run and not the short term as the 360 is beating the PS3 right now. I am no fanboy of any system but I will present my opinion of why the PS3 will win in the long run which could happen in one or two years.

The PS3 has over the 360:

1.Higher Resolutions support: the PS3 has HDMI 1.3 which supports upto 2560x1600 resolution vs what the 360 has which is HDMI 1.2 and that only supports 1080P. Also, the 1.3 supports 7.1 surround sound. I know what fanboys are going to say "we don't need it now...etc" Again, this argument I am making is for long term which I estimate will be a couple of years.

2.PS3 has Blu-Ray DVD format for its games. Regardless of how the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD war goes, Sony will still support its console. Proof? PSP is the proof. UMD is still the format the PSP uses so I don't see any reason Sony will drop support for the blu-ray on the PS3. We all know what the 360 has, and it's arguable whether it could use more space as it still has some good lengthy games, and the DVD storage doesn't seem to affect it much, but I am pretty sure in the future they will need it as technology advances and more space is required. 1GB Ram on PC's these days is pretty standard or even 2GB. Heck, just a few years ago 512MB was an awesome amount of memory just to give you guys an example of how fast technology requirement changes. 2 hours of high definition video takes 22GB of space, so DVD will definitely become obsolete sometime as everything moves to HD.

3. PS3 has standard harddrive and it's easily upgradable. This is a big advantage for the PS3 as we see games like Uncharted have no loading times, plus the HDD is very easily upgradable and you don't have to buy it from Sony. Some of my friends have 250GB HDD's on their PS3's.

4. Sony allows for third parties to build accessories for the PS3. this isn't a big deal, but for all the racing fans like me, The Logitech G25 is simply untouchable vs what M$ offers for a racing wheel just to give you an example.

5. The Cell!!! Well, I could finally say the architecture of the PS3 is awesome. If it can give games like Uncharted, then you have nothing to say about it but good things. It will only get better from here. Only time will tell though, but it looks pretty promising right now for anybody who played and seen Uncharted.

6.To be fair, I think Sony should have put 1GB of memory in the PS3, so that would be one down side to it, but if it could produce games as good looking as Uncharted then I don't know, and I am sure Sony knew better than me, so I will just give this one some time to see what happens.

Those leaps in Technology will make the 360 obsolete while the PS3 will support it easily!!! That would force M$ to release a new xbox. of course when that happens, M$ will drop all support for the 360 and concentrate on the new xbox to try to establish a new user base. At that time, the PS3 will be a well established system and the devs will be very comfortable programming for it and it will have a very large user base vs the newly released xbox. All of a sudden the scale is flipped, and you will see third party developers doing the same thing they are doing for the 360 right now unless of course M$ pays some big big big $$$ to do otherwise. They will drop support for xbox in favor of the PS3 which will be cheaper and probably easier to develop for at the time. How soon that time will come though is something that I don't know, but again technology goes fast. Anybody here is a Computer Engineer? Have you guys heard of Moore's law(if I recall the name right)?

So in short, because the PS3 is more advanced technologywise than the 360, it will beat it in the long run anyway, but that's not all. We don't even know how well the PS3 will do next year. It might even beat the 360 in user base just next year. Face the facts here. The 360 has already released all of its "big" titles. Everybody knows this. There is almost nothing coming for the 360 next year that has the same weight as Halo3 or GeoW except GeoW2 possibly, and NG2 (even this game is arguably is not as big as people want it to be). I can't even begin to list the insane games coming for the PS3 in 08, but MGS4, GT5, and possibly FF13 are very well established titles that will move systems without a doubt, and not to mention KillZone2, LBP and other titles. The PS3's sales lately have been more than the 360 worldwide and I believe that trend will continue and the gab between the two will even grow further as the big titles are near release.

The last point I am going to make is the multiplats. If Multiplats are going to move systems then it would go for the PS3. Who would want to spend money on a 360 when you could very possibly get RROD plus you get no value out of your system whatsoever unlike the PS3 which is one of the best buys for your buck out there.

I made this thread because I come to SW everyday, and I have been seeing some ridiculous fanboys make some seriously ridiculous threads about the "final nail in the coffin for the PS3", or "is the PS3 dead yet" or "the PS3 will die soon"....etc etc. These guys don't realize that the PS3 is just taking off!! The cell is being used to replace super computers in certain cases. what do you have against it? I am not joking, I am serious. You are one of the people that make this site so stupid sometimes. What argument are you actually presenting? Give me just one. what do you have against anything I said. This is now page 2 and the 360 fans have yet to produce one single argument against any of mine. Come on guys, where are the defenders. You take one line in my post and ignore everything else. Sometimes I tend to think that there area lot of children on this site that can't produce any arguments than "PS3 fails", and "PS3 has no games"....etc.

Pretending the Playstation 3 can last 8-9 years is crazy. You can't know that for sure. The power gap between the PS3 and the 360 is SMALLER then the power gap last gen between the Xbox and the PS2. Xbox is outdated looking back on it why would PS3 be so different?

You really underestimate Microsoft if you think they don't have any tricks up their sleeves. If they considered the recent price drop to be a threat I am sure they would drop the price on the 360 but they didn't. They would be able to lower their price alot safer than Sony could. If you think Microsoft is going to sit there and do nothing if Sony ever catches up to them then prepared to be dissapointed.

they are almost equal in power, Yes. but it's not just the processing power or the graphics that is going to make the difference (even though the PS3 definitely has more potential and we truly don't know what it could produce, but right now they are about equal with slight edge to the PS3). it's the features of the console that will make the difference here. DVD will be outdates sooner than you think, and 1080P TV's will be just like the 720P right now (stafcked in Walmart and cheap as dirt). New technologies demands will put an end to the 360 where it won't to the PS3. The PS3 can handle more years of technology than the 360 can. In a few years the 360 could become obsolete and it will happen.

I think some of us can see what happening in the real world and yet so many are blinded by any kind of hype. I was seeing a lot of power in the PS3 before it was ever released by reading articles on the specs. that was being incorporated in the system. I wonder what kind of argument they will have around the middle of next year.

tc, your post is pretty bullet proof, ownage confirmed, but my only gripe is that you barely mentioned games, which is basically what it boils down to. I'm getting360 over a PS3 this christmas becase Gears, Halo 3, Mass Effect pretty well beat out anything the PS3 can currently dish out. Also, 360 '08 is full of RPGs like Fable 2 and Lost Odyssy...

regardless, very nice post, and I agree with you for most of it. but it doesn't really matter, because interms of a gaming system, 360 currently has it in the bag.

It's sad, really. I was a big 360 proponent at one point but I took a chance on PS3. I've had way more fun on it than I'd been having on 360. So it goes on SW.

ps2 won last gen with the worst hardware, ps1 won the previous gen with the worst hardware, trend?

this thread is about the long term run and not the short term as the 360 is beating the PS3 right now. I am no fanboy of any system but I will present my opinion of why the PS3 will win in the long run which could happen in one or two years.

The PS3 has over the 360:

1.Higher Resolutions support: the PS3 has HDMI 1.3 which supports upto 2560x1600 resolution vs what the 360 has which is HDMI 1.2 and that only supports 1080P. Also, the 1.3 supports 7.1 surround sound. I know what fanboys are going to say "we don't need it now...etc" Again, this argument I am making is for long term which I estimate will be a couple of years.

Neither of these are a real advantage in mass market scenarios. Givenhow small the currentpenetration rate of 1080p TV's is and how slowly that rate is increasing, there is no real reason to support a higher resolution for this consolegeneration. 7.1 may be an advantage that more people will experience, but again, the average joe probably doesn't have a decent enough 7.1 system for it to make a difference.

2.PS3 has Blu-Ray DVD format for its games. Regardless of how the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD war goes, Sony will still support its console. Proof? PSP is the proof. UMD is still the format the PSP uses so I don't see any reason Sony will drop support for the blu-ray on the PS3. We all know what the 360 has, and it's arguable whether it could use more space as it still has some good lengthy games, and the DVD storage doesn't seem to affect it much, but I am pretty sure in the future they will need it as technology advances and more space is required. 1GB Ram on PC's these days is pretty standard or even 2GB. Heck, just a few years ago 512MB was an awesome amount of memory just to give you guys an example of how fast technology requirement changes. 2 hours of high definition video takes 22GB of space, so DVD will definitely become obsolete sometime as everything moves to HD.

For starters, your comparison to RAM is completetly off base. Increasing RAM only increases the speed at which processes run (not even all processes, just those with memory requirements larger than your processor's cache), not the actual amount of content which can be included.Also, from what I've seen, developers seem to bemoving towards morereal-time rendered cutscenes, instead of piling hours and hours of HD video onto disks,so IMO the space problem will gradually become a non-issue.

3. PS3 has standard harddrive and it's easily upgradable. This is a big advantage for the PS3 as we see games like Uncharted have no loading times, plus the HDD is very easily upgradable and you don't have to buy it from Sony. Some of my friends have 250GB HDD's on their PS3's.

The only reason excessive HD caching (as in Oblivion and other games on PS3) is a necessity is because of the slow read time of BR discs. Even given this advantage, how practical is it? Say games do eventually become 30 or 40 GB behemoths like you are proposing. These games will require even morecaching than before, forcing people to buy an extra hard drive just so they have enough room for everything else

4. Sony allows for third parties to build accessories for the PS3. this isn't a big deal, but for all the racing fans like me, The Logitech G25 is simply untouchable vs what M$ offers for a racing wheel just to give you an example.

Not being a racing fan or owning the X360 racing wheel I can't really argue this point.

5. The Cell!!! Well, I could finally say the architecture of the PS3 is awesome. If it can give games like Uncharted, then you have nothing to say about it but good things. It will only get better from here. Only time will tell though, but it looks pretty promising right now for anybody who played and seen Uncharted.

Yes the Cell is impressive from a computing standpoint, but that does not necessarily translate into more impressive games. Programming for even two or three cored processors can be difficult, and many developers are finding the PS3's architecture difficult to work with (at least several have made statements about this which have been posted on this forum).

6.To be fair, I think Sony should have put 1GB of memory in the PS3, so that would be one down side to it, but if it could produce games as good looking as Uncharted then I don't know, and I am sure Sony knew better than me, so I will just give this one some time to see what happens.

How is this a Pro? Those well versed in computer architecture would tell you that the lack of enough memory is a major oversight. This may well be a limiting factor in how much onscreen content can be displayed at once, and how detailed said content can be.Developers will have a hard time keeping consistent performance if cache/memory capacity becomes an issue, forcing themto retrieve excess datafrom the hard disk or BR disk more often.

Now, you might be thinking why I am listing these things. Basically I am trying to say that the PS3 is a system that is built for a very long run. I believe that Sony will not release another system for at least another 8-9 years. Why do I think that? because it doesn't need to release one!!!

I hope that last statement was a joke. Sure PS3 has some power under the hood, but enough to stay competitive for 8 - 9 more years? Do you even remember what you were playing 9 years ago? The original Half-Lifehad just been released. Try comparing HL to Crysis. That is the graphical gap that will exist between PS3 and newer platforms in9 years time.

See, Sony would not have released the PS3 as early as they did, but they were pressured by the competition and also were pressured by the need to release a system that supports the new leap in technology which is the HD format. The 360 is gonna become obsolete in a few years. that's because, we are going to see newer TV's role out with higher resolution than 1080P and standard 7.1 surround sound, and we are going to see games that take up as much as 30GB in space. Those leaps in Technology will make the 360 obsolete while the PS3 will support it easily!!! That would force M$ to release a new xbox. of course when that happens, M$ will drop all support for the 360 and concentrate on the new xbox to try to establish a new user base. At that time, the PS3 will be a well established system and the devs will be very comfortable programming for it and it will have a very large user base vs the newly released xbox. All of a sudden the scale is flipped, and you will see third party developers doing the same thing they are doing for the 360 right now unless of course M$ pays some big big big $$$ to do otherwise. They will drop support for xbox in favor of the PS3 which will be cheaper and probably easier to develop for at the time. How soon that time will come though is something that I don't know, but again technology goes fast. Anybody here is a Computer Engineer? Have you guys heard of Moore's law(if I recall the name right)?

Please, don't try quoting Moore's law. That is an ideal, not a practical statement that will hold true forever. Sure we can jam more transistors on a chip, but that does not ensure speed. That sort of "more is better" attitude led to things like the 32-stage pipeline found in the Pentium IV, which yeah, looks great on paper, but is easily outperformed by processors running multiple cores with far shorter pipes.

So in short, because the PS3 is more advanced technologywise than the 360, it will beat it in the long run anyway, but that's not all. We don't even know how well the PS3 will do next year. It might even beat the 360 in user base just next year. Face the facts here. The 360 has already released all of its "big" titles. Everybody knows this. There is almost nothing coming for the 360 next year that has the same weight as Halo3 or GeoW except GeoW2 possibly, and NG2 (even this game is arguably is not as big as people want it to be). I can't even begin to list the insane games coming for the PS3 in 08, but MGS4, GT5, and possibly FF13 are very well established titles that will move systems without a doubt, and not to mention KillZone2, LBP and other titles. The PS3's sales lately have been more than the 360 worldwide(source?)and I believe that trend will continue and the gab between the two will even grow further as the big titles are near release.

The last point I am going to make is the multiplats. If Multiplats are going to move systems then it would go for the PS3. Who would want to spend money on a 360 when you could very possibly get RROD plus you get no value out of your system whatsoever unlike the PS3 which is one of the best buys for your buck out there.

The paragraph above is nothing but fanboy drivel. Yes RROD has been a problem for the X360, but saying that you get no value out of your system is downright lying. I've been enjoying dozens of wonderful games for X360 while all PS3 fanboys can do is scrape by with a handful of truly good titles and wait.

I made this thread because I come to SW everyday, and I have been seeing some ridiculous fanboys make some seriously ridiculous threads about the "final nail in the coffin for the PS3", or "is the PS3 dead yet" or "the PS3 will die soon"....etc etc. These guys don't realize that the PS3 is just taking off!! Sit back and enjoy the ride!!!

I have all three consoles. Putting it simply, just because my PS3 reads Blu-ray discs, has "teh cell", an RSX reality synthisizer, tilt functionality, and a standard hard drive does not mean it has better games at all. Breaking down the time I play all my consoles:

XBOX 360: 95%

PS3: 3%

Wii: 2%

I'd probably play Wii a lot more if I had SMG though. UT3 could boost PS3 play time as well but the 360 is still dominant over both for me.

Causuals dont care about ANY of the reasons that you listed, and casuals in the end buy the most consoles, so you're theory is severly flawed.

Last xbox had better grafix and a unified harddrive, did that help it?
