The other hardware advantage was the Xbox 360s CPU. While weaker, it was much better for the games industry with faster and easier development. Being powerful is no good if it slows development down to a crawl.

But I was talking about the Xbox 360 as a whole product, not a hardware. Hardware is just one part of what makes up a console. Think of the console as not just a physical product, but also a business conduit too. How they deliver all the games and services, the Xbox 360 was amazing.

And yeah there was hardware firsts, but also everything down to the software firsts like achievements, which were good last gen, unfortunately now you get one for turning the console on or watching Netflix.

The ps4 is better than the ps3 and xbox 360 combined and the ps3 > xbox 360 for exclusives.

Oblivion is beat by many games out right now, same with mass effect and gears of war.

PS3.... CELL's SPUs are harder to program and RSX's aging design didn't help it. The extra complexity is patching RSX to workaround it's aging design.

If MS wasn't distracted by Kinect (~$70 BOM cost), XBO's 363 mm^2 chip budget would have yielded 28 CU GPU** and 384 bit bus PCB GDDR5-5000. This is Scorpio focused Xbox made from year 2012 IP.

**30 MB ESRAM replaced by another set of 14 CU. 800 Mhz 24 active CU = 2.46 TFLOPS, 4 CUs for yield issues. PCB cost doesn't change much.

Project Scorpio is the second XBO attempt with similar 360 mm^2 BOM budget, but with 16 nm FinFET instead of 28 nm process tech and no Kinect distraction. Scorpio has 44 CU GPU with 40 CU active and 4 CU for yield issues. In terms of CU count, Scorpio's 44 CU GPU is the second tier under the 14 nm FinFET flagship Vega's 64 CU.

Year 2013 XBO with 28 CU GPU would be the second tier under year 2013 flagship Hawaii 44 CU GPU.

My point, without Kinect, XBO would be near flagship GPU just like Xbox 360. MS attempted to copy Wii's success and didn't stick with Xbox core idea.

Clearly that was the case. MS dumping Kinect may have lowered the price, but it left the Xbox One weaker for nothing. But I don't think MS wanted to copy the Wii, but they wanted to differentiate a bit, the Kinect 2.0 is much more capable than the previous one.

This said, I don't think any consoles would get a flagship GPU. The PS4 one was decent, but it wasn't a stunner. The GTX 750 Ti often matched or exceeded it. It played the heavily flawed PC version of Arkham Knight at a better than consoles at 30fps I think. The GTX 750 Ti wasn't even a recommended card for Batman AA, but I found it worked really well.

For Doom 2016, PS4 beats GTX 750 Ti. PS4's heavy async usage and heavy multi-threading is a requirement not optional usage.

Under DX11, NVIDIA "smart" driver extracts async tasks and multi-threading from the D3D command stream. NV DX11 driver is a state of the art with heuristic search async task and multi-threading engine.

MS made mistakes with Xbox One, they will put them right with Scorpio.

When the scorpio releases and it's 500-600 dollars minimum, people won't buy it. Phil Spencer, the person who is in charge of the division your'e trying to praise himself, said that it's a niche product.

The scropio will be too expensive for the people who just want to play fifa/cod/madden/the show/battlefield, it'll mainly attract people who are fanboys so they won't buy a pc but want to play stuff like sea of thieves in higher settings, not the mainstream. Heck they'll probably ignore the scorpio all together, they care a lot more about where the population of players are in that crowd of multiplayer sports/fps gaming and not about pixels as long as it's reasonably good.

Not that it matters what most ps4 owners own, I'm talking about quality, not popularity (which the ps4 has anyway), the ps4 has tons of great experiences that you can't play on the competition. The xbox and xbox 360 also had some great experiences you couldn't play on the competition. The xbox one doesn't.

Sounds like you don't know how the market works and much about the consoles and what they have to offer.

It's not as durable either, the stick placement is from the early 2000's and the analog sticks are made from dog noses.

Their strategy with the 360 was 3rd party exclusives. Nothing about it was pushing for the best product as it was intentionally designed to invade living rooms which put Sony on their heels that gen. Sony did everything it could to combat Microsoft this gen with first party support. Xbox One didn't exactly have a good start with Ballmer running the show and Spencer has dramatically improved on the xbox one, pulled rare out of the kinect hell hole, attempting to unify with PC to some extent. Play anywhere is brilliant when we live in an age where many people may have more than one dedicated machine... and steam link is rubbish...

Nothing they have done is reactionary except for pulling the plug on everything digital. Development has a long pipeline regardless of whether or not it's the OS on the box or game development. Things like play anywhere are going to take time to get people to adopt, or new games in the works to be ready to show.

Kinect has effected both hardware and software engineering resources e.g. majority of Rare's software engineering resources was geared for Kinect games.

Scorpio is just the hardware component after dropping Kinect.

Scorpio's 360 mm^2 chip BOM cost is similar to Xbox One's 363 mm^2 chip BOM cost. PS4 Pro's APU is about 321 mm^2 area size, hence that's 12 percent higher BOM cost relative to Scorpio's version.

Scorpio's 12 GDDR5-7000 chips are not expensive and PS4 Pro already has 8 GDDR5-7000 chips + 1 GB DDR3. GDDR5-7000 chips are already lesser than GDDR5-8000, GDDR5-9000, GDDR5X-10000 and GDDR5X-11000.

Scorpio is a product with an extra ~1 year silicon maturity on AMD's 16 nm FinFET product cycle.
