[QUOTE="Eddie-Vedder"][QUOTE="sinseers"]I beat MGS4 in around 23 hours, only about half of that was cinematics, it's still just as long if not longer then the avergae game this gen in the gameplay departement. Stop hating.50% of a game being cut scenes is too damn muchExactly...I watch movies to be told a story, I play video games to EXPERIENCE a story...MGS games in general to me are too much telling and too little experiencing. Not exactly. We TRUE GAMERS, as you put it, just want more gameplay than cinematics within our game. No diss intended.

Review scores can be played many ways.
[QUOTE="sillaris"][QUOTE="Synthetic_NinJI"]Didn't like the game but to each his own.Synthetic_NinJIGOTY MGS4 has the best story of any game ever... keep hating Hating? No, I spent my hard earned money on MGS4, so I'm authorized to "Hate" ( ) As a person who has military experience it just did alot things wrong like calling a 6 year Special Operation Forces Veteran a "Rookie" That is not even proper military jargon let alone just.....stupid. I gave it this, it is the most well written piece of crap I have seen my life. Lol. Next thing you're going to tell me Scrubs isn't how hospitals really operate!!!!!!
[QUOTE="CreepyBacon"]Over rated to the sky and back.nintendo-4lifecare to explain why? Yeah i wouldn't say best game ever, but it's definitely a great title that deserves regonition. IMO it deserved GOTY more than any other game last year. yeah I think thats fair

corection:MGS4 is a movie Oh that's weird because I remember it taking about 25+ hours to beat on my first playthrough, and cutscenes took up about 9 hours. Idk what the hell happened to those other 16+ hours???"...that it forever crippled my spelling abilities."
Oh, we weren't playing finish the topic title? Drats!
well said. story in MGS4 was nice but gameplay was just plain silly. that game has some of the dumbest normal enemies. how can they not see you? lmao. COD4 did better stealth than MGS4. I'm talking about the sniper mission in COD4!I was unaware of the fact that being "like a movie" was actually a good thing for a video game.
I feel that developers should actually try to take advantage of the video game medium for story-telling purposes, as the developers of Planescape: Torment and Deus Ex did, rather than copy the conventions of other media.
I very much preferred both of the aforementioned games, in pretty much all aspects-including story-over MGS4, along with most other games ever made.

Doesn't everyone do that in system wars? Talk to the sheeps, if any of them are still around.

I'm talking about the sniper mission in COD4! By your logic, COD4 enemies are more silly because the whole mission was scripted. When you spend as much time watching a game as you doing playing it there is something wrong imo.Guybrush_3What do you expect from a Kojima title? Not that is a bad thing though, I never cared for the MGS series gamplay I was always played a MGS title for the story.
MGS4 is a good game but it definitely isn't for everyone. I don't blame people who find the game incredibly overrated. First time I played the game, I do remember the distinct feeling of "WTF, I play for ten minutes, then watch a movie for at least thirty minutes."
I completed the game yesterday for the second time and enjoyed it a whole lot more. This time around, knowing what to expect rather than just waiting to play, I was a lot more immersed by the story. It's true though, if this ain't your cup of tea, no matter what it won't be and it's perfectly understandable why many sit about scratching their heads at what makes the game so good. MGS4 is certainly not for newcomers. Hell, despite liking the overall story, there are so many freaking characters and emo moments that I flat out despise including key ones like Otocon. Even in this second play-through there were times I was wondering just WHY Kojima did things in certain ways but I still have respect for it as its his vision and art-form. In generality, I hate the way most of the male characters are a bunch emo pretty boys (E.g. Johnny and Raiden) and some parts nearly permanently turned my eyeballs into spasticated bouncing balls from how many times I rolled them (Spoiler: Like that part where Johnny and Merryl are talking about marriage and crap during that shoot-out...why... just..... WHY?!?!?!). It takes a lot to get over crap like that, but other characters like Drebbin and of course Snake successfully accomplish that task quite easily... and that's saying a lot.
The MGS series is flat out epic. Although it is convoluted, it's impressive how well it ties it all up from MGS1 to MGS4 - hell even the Metal Gear NES games are integral. The story is fantastic. There are so many concepts and themes that it explores and intertwines such as, to name a few, war vs love, thought control and ideology, genes vs fate vs freedom, and nature vs technology (this is my favourite and I love how it's constantly symbolized with the animal and metal-tech fusion). The homages that the series are rife with to various art styles, movies and and animes is meticulously crafted and has reached its peak with MGS4. Kojima has constructed the MGS universe brilliantly and painstakingly, leaving no pixel(?) unturned. The style has been constant from the first MGS and it's these familiarities that make you grin every so often (Spoilers: An example is the Psycho Mantis cameo where he asks you to put your controller down again in MGS4 and tries to read your memory but can't 'cause there's no PS1 memory card and you can press X to flashback the PS haha. This ends up destroying him. It's always given me a kick in MGS when they remind you it's a videogame. I also like the way the game has always been full of sexual innuendos, though in MGS4 it feels grossly voyeuristic whenever you beat one of those boss chicks. The games, though they do take themselves seriously are not without humility. It's almost like it recognizes it's a game and it's perfectly fine with being just that, but at the same time since it realizes it's a game it takes the mick out of itself for being pretentious at times... but maybe that's just me and maybe I'm not making sense...).
This game, like it or not, is a technical achievement and wholly distinctive. People complained about it winning graphics GOTY here on Gamespot and to back their claims posted half-arsed pics of the poorest quality they could find. Sure some of the textures aren't fantastic and certainly not in the pics which were posted, but it is a brilliant looking game taken as a whole. Many of the action in-game engine cut scenes left my jaw dropped such as Raiden vs the Geckos and Vamp. It's mind boggling that the game engine I was just playing is also creating action sequences so fluid and well directed that they genuinely rival something out of Hollywood. Every now and then it looked extremely close to CGI with the well detailed character models, lighting, depth of field, and high res textures. But even in-game it looks fantastic, especially the whole of Act 5. The sound itself is insanely crisp and it has a brilliant score to match with decent voice acting.
So there you have it, this game is mainly about the story and is a true to life work of art. The gameplay itself is alright but is definitely not anything revolutionary. Many times I was thinking that the actual gameplay could have just as easily been done on the PS2. Both times I completed the game I played on the Solid Normal difficulty setting (this is because I only recently re-bought the game after a good six months or so since it was stolen). On Solid Normal, it really wasn't much of a challenge at all. In previous MGS's, when you were caught, you were screwed but the gunplay is much easier in this one. I've already started it again on Big Boss extreme (this time I'll be skipping the cut scenes and play entirely for the gameplay) and it's already a much better game to play as the fear of getting spotted is back as in the older games. This game is for long-time fans, and that makes me respect it a whole lot more and a true representation of its art-form and vision. Those who hate it and think it's overrated are by no means wrong, it's not a universal game. It's not a question of "getting it," either. Personally though, this is definitely one of the best games this gen and it will certainly stick out in my mind from the rest of the grind as a classic.
