I also got an Elite unit with the E-74 bug, but I turned it off and waited for a week, and it went away (Then promply sold it to a friend for half price). Anyways, I have noticed this keeps happening about one year from when I get a new one. What blows is this particular model is a HALO model, so I don't want M$ to screw the pooch on returning it.

The question is, are you guys noticing a pattern with RROD? I have a few buddies that are saying that they believe that RROD may go away, but get replaced by other issues (E- series problems. I have also read that it comes down to Heat, and the reduced nano sized transistors aren't going to prevent the heat like we expect.

When I got this model, I really thought the problem was nearly gone (After all, I have had RROD twice before), and I thought that the HALO model would somehow be immune.

Anyone have any cooling suggestions that have been EFFECTIVE? It's the heat, it warps the Board.

To answer some questions that may arise :

I keep all of my system's really clean, and dust free.

I have it in a well ventilated area.

I game on PS3 and Wii as well, so the 360 gets breaks from gaming.

I never leave it on overnight (Although I did that by accident with the PS3 one night, I fell asleep in the livingroom).

I never move it, for transport, it stay on a glass shelf.

I also have another 360, which takes time away from this one, giving it further breaks.

Well, I've seen some posters claiming it was GONE, and I was happy, as I wanted to believe that. Then, wham, XMAS Season 2008 is ruined.

Every Xmas season, this happens. GeoW 2006, Halo 3 2007, and now GeoW2/Fable 2 2008.

Anyone that hasn't got hit by this, you are very fortunate.

I was talking to a M$ rep on the phone, but he was from India or something, and it was taking like 20 mnutes, so I let him know I will call tomorrow, because I had to go. What a process.

Also, PROTIP, save your HDD, don't send it to M$. Also, M$ realizes guys, that you will be OFFLINE for 3-6 weeks (About a month), so they give that month back in XBOX LIVE.

That's amazing. You got one of the Super models. My buddy did too. He bought one in late 2006 for GeoW, and he just hasn't had issues. He's my only real friend that has been so fortunate. My cousin's, Brother, and buddies, not so lucky.

The crappy thing is right now, I am leading them, and I am super clean, and my house stays cool.

Did you do anything special to preserve it?

Lol. Perhaps, but I actually have another unit that I use sometimes in a different room. I simply swap the HDD or Memory Card (I have a few of those, M$ couldn't pick a size, lol.) and play on those.

Honestly though, my gamerscore was used on that machine for about 80% of the time.

Yes, PLEASE do so. That would be GREAT. I will take any solution out there, because I will be using them for this next model. I don't want a repeat performance in Xmas 2009.

Yeah, it does need to stop. I've had 3 RROD's in the space of under a year. It's pathetic, a 3 year warranty is nowhere near enough. What really anoys me is the MS enthusiasts who try to downplay it and pretend it's not a problem anymore.

Yeah, I plan on it, but I don't look forward to the hour long phone call, as it will NOT be my first time. It's all so inconvienant. IF it wasn't a HALO model, I would probably bypass M$, oh well. I guess I got LittleBIGPlanet just in time. I didn't get to finish Fable II, which irks me.

I'm the same as St1ka (i havnt had a RROD yet), had a day 1 launch premium, no problems at all with it, traded it in for an elite when they came out and i havnt had any probs with that either. I do feel for people who've had lots of RROD's though, i was hit hard with the PS2 DRE problems so i've a good idea what you're all goin through.

I cant say i pay any special attention to mine, apart from making sure they're ventilated when i'm playing them.

You could just have a bunch of fans aimed at it and turn them on when your playing your 360, that might stop it from heating up so bad.

Honestly, aournd the 2-5 hour mark at max. I can't seem to find time, it seems to keep on gaming like some of my friends do. I couldn't finish Fable 2, because someone wanted to see a movie, someone else wants to go out, etc. (On top of the movies/work etc.) It's a tad annoying, but it turns out good.

Do you think 2-5 hours is bad. I have come home at about 5:30 and gamed until 10:00Pm before, is that the issue? Usually though, I tend to game from 6pm to 9pm, then go grab Dinner.

Interesting. I do have a fan upstairs that's in a closet I don't use, I guess I could do that. The sound may bother me, but it's worth a try. I could always buy a quiet fan. Nice, thanks.

also, you could look into the NEW intercoolers as well. it makes it run even louder but i guess the new one are supposed to be great as far as helping your console. it won't destroy it like the old intercoolers from what i understand...

My 360 is 2 years old and I've had RROD three times so far. I sent it to the repairs two weeks ago and it should come back tomorrow hopefuly. Anyway I've heard that with newer models this problem is basically gone, so hopefully we should see a decrease in the number of RRODs. I'm hoping they replaced my 360 with a new one :D .

I play around 2-3 hours. I really try to limit my playing time so the thing doesn't get the chance to overheat. This is my second 360, had it since August '06.

Woah! Don't do that my friend, especially if your gonna have the fan facing the 360 fan - thats just repelling wind at one other and the 360 fan wont work right, you'll probably end up screwing it up even more cus it'll actually overheat.

As for the RRoD, i do not see why that is still around, new Xbox 360 Elite and newer Premium models supposedly have bigger heat sinks and smaller chip - the Graphics Chip was normally the reason for RRoD, but Microsoft went back to an ASIC vendor and had the chip redesigned so it would dissipate less energy into heat.

I was gonna get a Xbox 360 Elite for Christmas, fully aware of RRoD - but i was gonna do what you did, keep it well ventilated and free of dust, dont over-use it and take breaks - hell, i even have a Wii and a PS3 just like you. But if that didn't help you then hows it gonna work for me? :? Im a bit worried about buying one now.

As for a solution dude, i dont know - you did everything i would do, kept it clean and well ventilated away from things.

In my opinion the problem will never go away TC, they'll make it less prevalent but it'll still have atleast a 10-15% failure rate for the rest of the generation, then next-gen they'll make a console with good hardware.

But this gen it's too late for them to completely fix it, it would cost more money to do that then to leave it alone, so they're more then likely just gonna tweak hardware, not completely change everything, and gamers will have to deal with it.

i built a wooden frame that keeps my 360 elevated with plenty of room underneath to let hot air from the gpu escape through the bottom also when was your HALO edition console made, cos not all the HALO edition consoles are falcon model 360's some are actually zephyr models with the extra heatsink fitted.

That sucks, man...

This isn't a very good time to lose your 360. If you're buying any multiplats, you could always get them for your PS3.

I've had RROD twice, but luckily for me, they were at a time where I wouldn't have been playing it. It really needs to dissapear... It's really sad that it's lasted this long...

It's very likely to never go away cause even MS doesn't know what the cause of the RROD is.

I dont know why, but that made me laugh - Microsoft ..... does NOT know what the cause of RRoD is.

Microsoft... one of the most powerful, successful companies in history - LMAO.

I am on my 4th 360, and this model seems to be doing its job now. I keep it on its side by itself on a shelf with plenty of airspace around it on all sides, with the power brick in a similar setup behind my TV on a shelf.

Not saying that is perfect or anything, as its just as likely to RRoD, but this particular unit has been with me for a year and a half with limited issues.

And TBH, with the 3 years coming up quick for me (launch owner) I am getting rather nervous.

That's what people who work for MS have said over the last year.

Almost all RRoDs are caused by poor heat dissipation, sub-standard thermal paste, poor component connections to the motherboard, and a lack of redundant heat controls. You can see this clearly in people who have fixed their own RRoDs through opening the system.

Both manufacture and design are to blame, and MS knows how they could fix it. They just don't. Instead, they try retroactive fixes such as adding heatsinks to refurbed units.

Sorry to have that happen to ya. Luckily my launch 360 is still kickin. I bought a second one though just in case. Everyone knows the launch models are faulty.
