The generation I grew up with split in the year 2000. Half went to PC and Half went to the Ps2/Xbox/Gamecube. I'm sorry, but once you grow up in the SNES/Genesis/Ps1/ N64 Generation, you come to realize that console gaming has changed too much for you to completley enjoy it again. I tried buying the Dreamcast, Ps2, and 360, but they just didn't do it for me. R.I.P 1987-2000 The best era of gaming

I grew up with the NES/SNES/Genesis/N64 too. And here I am with a Ps360. I used to play on the PC too, but I just prefer consoles. Different strokes for different folks.

I grew up with the Intellivision, and this generation is by far my favorite, and I have more great games than I have time for if I am being honest.

I grew with an Atari 2600 and a Texas Instruments computer. This generation has been great for games.

I think we all have higher expectations now and we miss not having them met or completely blown away! I miss the huge leaps between generations and also having less games and choice but in turn this forcing me to play the game to death until every little part of the game was beat. I miss the feeling of beating Street Fighter 2 on the hardest difficulty nd getting goose-pimles when I actually heard the sound of beating M Bison after playing for hours and hours straight!

Now, I get into a game and my whole attitude is different, before I felt like the game was saying "come on beat me if you can", now I say to the game "entertain me if you can". Games have changed but so have my expectations and I've become a really lazy gamer. I think I need a week off work of just laying a single game to recapture that feeling!

Does anyone know what I'm talking about lol?

I kind of agree. I grew up with PC and PS1. Gaming isn't the same. But I do think it's evolved into something great.

I was rised with a Nes at home. Then I got a Snes, then a N64, then a Cube, a PS2 (and, between them a GBP, a GBC, a GBA) and still I'm enjoying A LOT this gen with my Wii, DS, and 360. So no, console gaming is changing, sure, but it still extremely enjoyable.

90's were the best IMO hands down. Games don't hold me like they used to. For the most part they seem like a fun joy ride, then your done.

Does it look like I care if you believe me or not? And having been on these boards a long time, I can tell you I am not the only older gamer who feels like I do. Sure, a whole lot of people love the nostalgia of what games were like when they were kids, so do I. The problem I think is that I still play a lot of the older games, and I can therefore remember that the vast majority of older games, like games now, are poor. Very few games are as great now as you think you remember them as.

Granted, some games are timeless, but there are also modern classics out now. Its also true that IMO too many gamers are spoiled and love to bash any game that gets popular, even the slightest. Just look at how people love to tear down the games many consider great, like GTA IV, MGS4, Halo, Gears, SMG, LBP, Oblivion, Crysis, I could just keep going.

Isn't that wonderful? I mean, you can still hook up an N64 today! You can always live in the gaming past if you want to. Weird, I know.

What does a sequel have to do with anything? Most people on the N64 considered the sequel to Goldeneye to be better than Goldeneye. I would take any modern FPS over Goldeneye, even mediocre ones, since Goldeneye now is an antiquated, outdated FPS with tons of legacy issues.

A lot of games set bars. In a lot of different aspects across many genres.

The games you mentioned are remembered as pioneers because 3D console gaming was in a far younger state than it isnow. It's just logical that nowadays games set more subtle bars.

Goldeneye set a bar....that was jumped over many times since by many games. Its not as good as everyone wants to remember it was. At the time, with nothing better, yes, it was fantastic and I spent hundreds of hours in it. But now, its been passed, many times over.

To some of us, SMG or LBP did things better than Mario 64, and even if you think Mario 64 is the best thing ever, this generation you can get it to go on the DS.

hmmm I'm not sure you know. I think the bar is only set when we look back and say wow! I think 10 years from now there may be a title or 2 that we will refer to as setting a bar! I dont think games are worse or better as far as they are 'games'.

--- I know one thing. The consoles this gen are definitely the best technically. If Microsoft or Sony doesn't end this gen prematurely, this gen could be the BEST IMO. Instead of worrying about the next graphical advancement, focus on the next great game design. --- Generations should become longer with the new graphical leap, not shorter.

I really cant complain, with each generation of consoles came a huge no. of quality games on which i spent countless hours of fun.. This gen is no different and am currently having a great time gaming on my PS3/360 & PSP..

Am still nostalgic of those 16bit era days, but probably cause i was a young kid/teenager and had less stuff to worry about ;)

I agree completely, hell i even have a hard time tearing myself away from 2007s games, i still get the urge to re-play Mass Effect, STALKER, the Witcher and much of my on-line time is taken up by TF2, CoD4, L4D and Halo 3. that's not even mentioning the re-play value you get out of games like CnC3 or WiC or Sins. Im struggling to keep up TBH, especially when you consider i still have games like UT2004 and CS:S hell even HL:DM. 2000 onwards has been EPIC. Hell even just 2007 was probably my favorite year in gaming since 1997. oh yeah and HL2 :P. so no TC you are wrong.

I love these kind of arguments, especially when they involve kids who weren't even alive in the NES/SNES/Genesis era.

I'm not sure why so many people need to get all misty-eyed when they look back and somehow delude themselves into thinking that every game they ever played was a labor of love by some guy in his garage, rather than a soulless cash-in by some money-grubbing corporation.

Nostalgia is fine, but reality is better.

Well it's nice you only picked 3 of the listed franchises, but lets assume the rest don't exist for your sake. If you were honestly to look back on those games now, would you actually pick the first games over the most recent? I doubt it. Just because they aren't reinventing the wheel doesn't mean they aren't highly polished and refined versions of their predecessors. I can still love all of these games and I can safely assume I would talk about them years from now.

By your logic, doom came before halo 1, therefore halo 1sucks now.

I grew up with Nes/Snes/N64, was a real Ninty player, purely bcos everything else at the time sucked, altho fanboy rage prolly disallowed me from owning any sega system, even tho they were alright. The commodore 64 was also pretty good. But this gen, having played all consoles, is the best. Wii and Ps3 has shown us what gaming can be like. Haven't been that impressed with 360 games bar a few.

Why? It isn't a legitimate response to just reiterate a point I already knew. but I'll humor you. What exactly about the first hasn't already been done better in the second or 3rd halo, or various other games for that matter?

If you were honestly to look back on those games now, would you actually pick the first games over the most recent? I doubt it. Just because they aren't reinventing the wheel doesn't mean they aren't highly polished and refined versions of their predecessors. I can still love all of these games and I can safely assume I would talk about them years from now.

By your logic, doom came before halo 1, therefore halo 1sucks now.

Vaasman

I would actually prefer to play Halo 1 over Halo 3.

Why? It isn't a legitimate response to just reiterate a point I already knew. but I'll humor you. What exactly about the first hasn't already been done better in the second or 3rd halo, or various other games for that matter?

The pistol, and the simplicity of the game. Not that it was easier, its just the more weapons you add to a franchise, the more confusing and useless other weapons become. Halo 1 was perfect

Eh, no, it really has nothing to do with anything. I like how you delete your posts right after posting.
