If you remember, a while ago, a rumor broke that the NX, Nintendo's next console, will not be even as powerful as the PS4.
The man who spread that rumor has come clean, claiming that he was misquoted:

This topic is locked from further discussion.
I had no idea that this was a recent quote. Must have missed it entirely.
Whether it is as powerful or isn't, as long as it has the games I desire and separates itself from the competition in some way, either with a Gamepad or some new innovative online features or something, I'll be happy.
I think the first statement made perfect sense. If you look at Nintendo's plans for their consoles, they've never tried to compete on a power level. I think what they meant was that the plans for the NX are deeper than just "good hardware" and that they were not concerned with beating the ps4 in power as an objective or a selling point.
Nonetheless, hardware being developed now and released in 2016/17 will almost certainly be more powerful than the ps4, the same way the WiiU is more powerful than the ps3 and 360.
@charizard1605: A number of times and only recently. They specifically said for example that the wii u would not be far behind it's competitors. It's clearly in the last gen bracket, so it is far behind.
Example
They must be going all out to make it as powahful as a 2012 gaming PC. :P
Which would already be more powerful than the current gen consoles, if it were a decent 2012 gaming pc.
hehe, likely.

I get your point though, they should take advantage of their situation to strive for something more than just "better than the ps4"... maybe something to actually compel us into buying it from a hardware standpoint?

Agreed but without the usual gimmicks, something solid and that 3rd parties would be all onboard with. Launching with a phenom new Zelda that showcases the new system would be advisable as well.
@DocSanchez: You are misinterpreting what Iwata said. He said the gap between Wii U and PS4/XB1 would not be as much as the gap between PS3/X360 and Wii was, and he was right about that.
Nintendo never lie about console power and specs. Back when Sony and Sega were known for only posting theoretical performance peaks for their machines, Nintendo were the only ones posting real world performance peak specifications. It's the kind of thing that led to the misconception that the PS2 is more powerful than the GameCube.
In my opinion Nintendo releasing a console in the middle of a generation is a lose-lose proposition. They probably will release a console that has more power than the ps4 and the bone. However I still think developers will make games for the market leaders. Essentially they will waste most of the power of the NX.
this was proven during the PlayStation 2 generation. All of the third party blockbusters were built for the Sony console. They then had minor graphical improvements for the other consoles essentially wasting the power of those consoles. Nintendo's console will be the same thing if it has considerable more power than the bone and the PlayStation 4. only the first party software will truly show the value of the system.
They need more than just playing catch-up if they're aiming for a power based console (I mean in terms of pure appeal for the "hardcore" consumer that isn't a Ninty fan already).
Should be interesting. They may be caught up in this weird phase where they get "older" tech (that's stronger than the current gen) at a decent price since both AMD and NVIDIA are now interested in pushing out completely new/different stuff for the next couple of years (HBM based cards and the sort). So in that sense, they have this "odd" window to use really strong tech (again, versus current gen) that may give them quite the edge. Of course, on the other hand, that may also backfire a bit later down the road when the next PS/Xbox release given Ninty may find themselves stuck on a different console time cycle.

The Wii U released 7 years after the 360 and is only on par with it
They would have been chock crazy to release a system weaker than the PS4 when generationally, the NX will be competing with XBox Two and PS5. The writing is on the wall, people want power.
It's not just power, it's "value". PS4 has a pretty outstanding price/power ratio when it launched. Wii-U did not, since it was basically same as a PS3/360 which could be frequently had for $199 holiday bundles for years (most important holiday season). Wii-U was basically same, yet launched at $349 and is still $299. That's why it never sold. Right away people analyzed the games, and realized it was even UNDERPERFORMING PS3 and 360 in many cases. So why pay for a new console?
Of course there are also "fad" products which step outside the bounds of normal price/value, which the Wii was. They had an innovation there with the motion controller, it worked, and it became a hot product. It also helped that it was pretty cheap at launch. Nintendo obviously tried to capture another FAD with the Wii-U, they saw all the IPAD sales and decided to slap a cheap tablet on a cheap console and hope it would catch on. It didn't.
Nothing can ever be as powerful as the PS4 I think.
After all, it has 8GBs of GDDR5.
Not to mention the most powerful video game console in the history of video games.
Oh Im sure there are things out there that can match or exceed the PS4, easily. Just depends on what Nintendo goes with. As long as they deliver on the games that is what matters. If I want to argue specs all day the new PC im building destroys any console.

it's the most powerful console of the most recent gen, therefore it's not surprising that it's the most powerful console. I'm not sure why you think this is something that needs stating nor why it you think it adds value to the power of the ps4.

He just likes pointing out that his dwarf is a 1/4 inch taller than your dwarf lol. :P
@augustevans: wrong
It's six years after ps3 7 after 360 and 6 after wii
But it more powerful it has more ram and such

or in this case, the PS4 is 40% more powerful than X1. It just happens to be current gen 8 console leader too.

Right, 40% LOL, Hey, the PS3 had all that power on paper > 360, how'd that work out for ya.
Anyhooey, I know you're a closet lem and use your X1 10X mooaarrre than your Bore and really, nobody could blame ya. . :P

Power doesn't always equal says leader, but by golly it does this gen,

But have you see Crackdown 3. " Heil68 knees start knocking shaking in boots " :P
LOL at people not getting @Heil68's humor..
I can't tell if it's humor or genuine fanboyism, is the problem :P
He has an XBone as well as a PS4. Heil is just.. Heil. It's all about the live love and learn philosophy.
then I'll live and learn... maybe love XD
Riiiggghhhttt cowgenja. You still looking for that apology?

Nah, waiting for the combo kill when XBox Two tries the DRM again. Although, to be fair, gamers have abandoned the XBox already.
and teh cloudz!!!!!
"teh cloudz" has resulted in my favourite game, forza, with the best AI mankind has ever seen... now stop downplaying it
Old news, this guy already said that a while back though maybe in just a tweet.
It is borderline impossible for the NX to have a weaker CPU or less RAM than PS4. Keep that in mind. Unless you think Nintendo is absolutely insane and they'll use their PowerPC cpu for the fourth time.
An A-57 ARM cpu is clock for clock better than the Jaguar cpu's in Ps4 and Xbone. And there is an even better arm cpu, the A72 which at 2.4ghz would wipe the floor with Jaguar. Like Jaguar they are small form factor chips so Nintendo could use them in a console.
So ARM is definitely what Nintendo will go with, they want the same architecture on the handheld and console, and X86 isn't efficient enough for the handheld, but ARM is
(what they've been using in the handhelds anyway) and is also powerful enough for the console.
ARM is the only architecture that makes sense for NX.

40%? Where'd you get that number? I wasn't aware the difference was that big.
Well the Ps4's graphics chip was 50% better than X1's (18 compute units vs 12), but then Xbox one got an overclock before it released and that dropped the gap down to 40%. But I think when you factor in memory speeds PS4's advantage is bigger than that.

Interesting. Though I don't suppose that translates fully into better performance in-game? I know the ps4 is more powerful, obviously, but when it comes to fps or resolution I've never seen the gap that big, I don't think.

Yeah, 1080p (Ps4) vs 900p (XB1) resolutions show that gap. The most recent example being MGS V.
Assuming both a Ps4 and XB1 multiplat get the best treatment possible, you get that resolution difference then another small advantage or two on Ps4 (in the phantom pain's case better texture filtering and skin shaders). Significant differences but not huge like Ps2 vs. gamecube for example.
