So me and my friends were walking downtown today when we noticed Microsoft rented out a building for a kinect showing. Having nothing to do we went in to test it out.

What was there:
Kinect Sports
Kinect Adventures
Kinectimals
Kinect Racing
Kinect Fit (?)
Kinect Dancing game

Alright, so heres how it went:
Kinect's games were clearly casual - so significantly that I dont remember any console game with a controller being this casual. Nothing was deep in any way.

Bowling almost played itself when you actually aligned to the 'purposely angled camera' (Came in 3rd in the tourny for the entire night, Dr. Awesome).

Kinect Adventures - we had the most fun with this one actually. It wasnt deep, and it probably wont have any lasting appeal, but we played it twice and I accidently smacked my friend across the face thinking we were further apart (based on the characters on screen).

Kinectimals - no, you cant kick the tiger. You cant beat him, you cant do anything harmful. Most of the actions didnt make sense and the only things we did that worked were purposely acting retarded or gay Jazz hands seemed to make the tiger do a 2 legged stand for some reason.

Kinect Racing - dry humping the air makes you go faster. The controls were very strange some times, with turning not being as precise as it should be.

Kinect fit - didnt play

Kinect Dancing game - We got half way through funky town before stopping. We just felt retarded to be honest - didnt help that we sucked at the game. We got points for actions not even close to what we were supposed to do - and our timing was just awful on top of that.

Kinect Sports - Bowling I mentioned - but it was nowhere near as bad as ping pong. You really had little control over where the ball goes or the power. completely missing the ball still counted as a hit - and sometimes swinging way too early worked too. Some motions werent even registered.

Kinect - It was laggy, buggy, and very very imprecise. The cursor would have some acceleration and great lag - so just accessing the menu was broken sometimes. It would often mistake my friends hand for mine when they went to close and the cursor would jitter around the place. Im sure we all predicted this.

Overall its heavily casual, imprecise, laggy, and not very efficient. Its not hypable - and there doesnt seem to be many hard core uses for it. That said, we had some fun with it but we dont expect the fun to last long.

Ps. Oreo cakesters suck.

I'm interested to see how this fairs closer to release. No doubt sales will rocket though :(

and the damage control bout kinect begins again...one thing in common with most previews have been the input lag itself being a hinderane of the product.

You know those commercials for pharmaceuticals that have a disclaimer that's longer than the rest of the commercial?

I'm expecting Kinect to kind of be like that.

He was probably playing behind closed doors. You could get sued if you took pictures of a big thing like Kinect.

Everyone knows Kinects hardware is garbage compared to Move. Their going to know the games as simple and easy as possible so casuals can have fun and not notice the lag and inaccurate controls.

This thread got replies fast. Ill answer any questions. Sorry no pictures - I didnt think I would have posted about it online so I didnt bother. If you want proof, I live in Toronto Ontario - Canada. Its along Yonge Street just around Eatons Center, South of Queen Station on the yonge line IIRC. Check it out. It wasnt closed doors. Yes, I suppose it is realistic to not kick a tiger - however there was very little I could actually do unless I acted gay for some reason. Iron Creed - yes I did manage to. All I did was turn around on Kinect Adventures when you control the stupid dinosaurs for some reason. I saw a little kid play kinectimals and I tried to convince him to attempt to beat the tiger. He didnt. He seemed to know what he was doing for the most part, but even though he clearly bounced the ball back to the tiger it didnt register.

i've played it too (but i never got to upload the video), and i didn't like it. i was giving it a chance for redemption since i only played a ubisoft sports game, but it seems every kinect game is just as inaccurate, laggy and minigame-based :P

Dont bring move into this thread please? I also played Move a while ago and the games were also pretty horrible - not as bad but horrible nonetheless. The hardware is worlds better at this stage though. --- And I know people are saying things like firmware updates and software updates to kinect - but I am not talking about any of this, Im only saying what I saw, what I played, the games that were there, and the disheartening RARE logo.on the bowling and ping pong games.

To be honest I didnt even remember it was going to do that really.. I just started to turn around slowly and my friend started bursting into laughter. After about 30 seconds it shows a replay of your actions. Actually, we had more fun completely ruining eachothers cakesters, Ive never laughed so hard in my life, it was hurting for a good 15 minutes after we stopped laughing. Those things are just nasty.. When I heard that the bowling tourny prize is a t-shirt, kinect, or more cakesters I was disappointed. I wouldnt have minded a 360 myself. But Kinect is fun as a party kinda thing with friends - I just dont expect that fun to last. Ping pong was less deep than Wii sports tennis.

Its a good experience for the architecture alone to be honest. Thats 1 of the reasons we even entered. My class has an architecture project and shockingly the interior looked along the lines of what we were planning (Just.. less microsofty). Im sure that most (all) of you wont share the same feelings for that though, haha. The time we were there was between 6 and 9, thats when the tourny took place. Not sure if its open all day or just on tourny days, tourny times.

Haha, well the little tiger annoyed us really, we couldnt pet it, we couldnt talk to it, we couldnt even abuse it. All we could do was gay poses and jazz hands. Also, after every game (except sports) it shows you pictures of you playing. Its pretty bad. You can see that the camera isnt running at a decently fast framerate, this is probably what causes some of the lag and miscalculations in game. If this is the case theres going to be no real quick fix - and your going to be having a hard time in even a moderately lit home.

On our second play through of Kinect Adventures, we realized that everything was 100% scripted. Everything happens in the exact same locations, everything is always the same. Kind of a bummer, had things been randomly generated it may have been a lot better of a showing. The fairy thing in Kinectimals constantly clipped into the floor, which was strange. It could be that these are old demos and have/will be updated in the future though. I was really looking forward to Eden making an appearance. Cant win em all I guess.

Kind of an open concept floor, had some computers there, some floating stairs. Open to below in the center of the second floor. Booths and cubical werent there - probably not enough space. Green floors indicate the camera's operating view and where you should stand. There was a cute asian girl playing Kinect Fit. Overall the event was better than Sony's recent one at the humming bird center - as you can actually play the games instead of waiting in line. This is partly because of the lack of interest and people there though.

Why does everyone assume this will be a gigantic hit in sales ? this isn't nintendo were talking about, after the first review and complaints of it's lagpeople will run from it.

You have too much faith in customers. MS will no doubt maintain an expensive ad campaign, and impulse/need-based/loyal shoppers will help bolster the sales.

Not everybody is as informed as the general gaming community on forums etc.

It's amazing when people overhype add-ons that don't really add onto the value of what already is there.

Hence: Wiimote > Move > Kinect on that scale.

My flickr isnt that bad :( Haha, I know, psnp blah blah blah. Yes, I own a psn - but no ps3. Im currently leeching off my friend. Im only really interested in 1 game in the future and thats Killzone 3 - so Im not a fanboy by any means, I actually dont even get any time to play anymore because of school. You can trust what I say here, but should take the time to test it yourself (If its in your area). Just dont go planning on buying it without testing it first.

If true I don't understand why you would put yourself through every game, and for that matter do you seriously expect us to believe you had the opportunity to play all of those games? you must have picked a very quiet demo booth with nobody keeping an eye on it...

I call BS

Unless you post pics from cell phones and can proof it I CALL BS!!!!!!

Get over it. Even if it was a pic you would of easily just have said "OMG its photoshopped." It's pretty obvious from people's impressions of Kinect that it's a poor attempt to take away motion control from Nintendo.

Day 1 purchase.

Haha, well, its not quite humping the air, but you pull back on the air wheel and then forward - but requires some effort SOMETIMES in getting it to work.

[QUOTE="bloodlust_101"]Kinect Adventures - we had the most fun with this one actually. It wasnt deep, and it probably wont have any lasting appeal, but we played it twice and I accidently smacked my friend across the face thinking we were further apart (based on the characters on screen).KingTuttle

Any chance I get to hit my friends with an excuse is insta-buy for me.

Indeed it is. Right square in the face.

There were only a handful of games with about 2-3 stations on each game. No booths whatsoever and very few people. I never heard of this event so its possible that they didnt advertise. Most college students are working on their exams and final projects for the term so they wouldnt show up. Most kids dont use the internet to scout for gaming events. And most casuals arent going to do a whole lot of net searching for it either. There was about 20-30 people in there at peak and as little as 10 when we left. Its not hard to play everything, especially when the demos lasted only about 5 minutes each. I could draw up a floor plan if you need one for proof, haha. Heres a quick google of "Kinect Toronto" http://dorkshelf.com/2010/09/27/kinect-experience-in-toronto/ Just a small building in the middle of a semi cold night.

I remember several lemmings on the internet fighting hard about how Natal was not smoke and mirrors and that it was the revolution in gaming. Now only ProjectNatalFan is left :P
