I work at futureshop and I was running the front cash today. A lady came up to me with 2 3DS's in hand and around 5 games. I was scanning them into the computer and making small talk when she asked me "So these are the latest handheld's hey?". I resonded with "Not exactly, this is the latest offering from nintendo but sony will be releasing a new PSP early next year". She seemed puzzled so I gave her details on the Playstation Vita and how it compared to the 3DS in tech and games, I also gave her playstation's website so she could do some research of her own. Needless to say after hearing about the Vita I had to void the purchase because she had completley changed her mind. This brings me to the point of this thread, are DS, DSi and 3DS sales sucsessful due to gimmicky advertising and uneducated buyers? As soon as this woman knew there was a more technologically advanced handheld on the way she wanted me to cancel her purchase. I think sony needs to do a better job of advertising the Vita, somthing along the lines of a huge advertising campain that shouldve started right before the 3DS's price drop. Thoughts?

I think what makes her an "uneducated buyer" is that she listened to someone telling here to not buy a handheld solely on hardware specs and not game quality.

Well, they are the latest handhelds. When the Vita comes out, are you going to tell them that there is a new version of 3DS with coming out?

Wow... yep, all DS is is a gimmick, its success has nothing to do with the fact that there are fantastic games for it.

You're an asset to the Sony team. People like the latest new stuff, so some people will just burn money when they hear of some new tech being released without much information. I find it funny how you took it upon yourself to educate her though lol.

Many systems sell to the masses via clever marketing campaigns or gimmicks. However, there are educated buyers of systems out there. To assume there aren't would be foolish (i.e. people in SW own the system).

Ugh. Well great job some kid is probably going to have a crappy birthday and wait for something that he might not even want. Better tech on the PSvita means nothing. Especially considering its not coming out until next year when there is alot of great stuff coming for the 3DS soon and out already...

Her mind was swayed because she was told there'd be better hardware in the future.

TC, do you realize there's ALWAYS better hardware coming out? I mean for every single electronic device ever? You lost a sale for no good reason at all.

this is one of the dumbest threads of the week. what was the point really? DS's are for uneducated buyers. you could same the same for someone who went and brought a psp and didn't know what the heck they were about. i have co -workers who have brought Ds's and psp's and had no clue about the specs or even what type of games were out there for it. and it's uneducated to buy a handheld or console soley on the specs. DS was successful because of the gaming library not because people were "uneducated". even looking back gameboy. gamegear had higher specs but people still brought gameboy because it wasn't just porting games from snes like gamegear was doing with genesis games.helwa1988

Yeah, seriously. Why is it that uneducated people buy nintendo handhelds but not Sony's? How does that work exactly? Sony doesn't exactly write a ****ing math equation on psp boxes to deture stupid people.

I didnt lose a sale, I created one. For an even more expensive product in the near future. You can all belly ache if you'd like, she asked for my opinion and I gave it. She should know about the Vita before she buys a 3DS, how crushed would she have been when it finally launched and she had already bought 3DS's? Also its not like you say, if a computer component came out I wouldnt say wait till next year for a better part. These are two completely different situations and you know it.

WOW!!! If I did what you did I probably would have been fired from my job. You were better off at the very least telling her about the Vita but then telling her that the 3ds also had some great games coming out. Further more, how do you know that she wouldn't buy both? Seems like the woman had a lot of cash to burn. You could have marketed it a little differently by telling her that it's a great time to be a handheld gamer. Get both 3ds and Vita and be happy!!!

While 'researching' it on the internet, what makes you think she won't buy it cheaper online? (Amazon usually do really good console/handheld bundles at launch) You lost a garunteed sale in favour of a possible sale...

Is there some law stopping her from buying BOTH a 3DS and vita? Why would you pass a large sale up today for possibly maybe one a year in the future? What if she never comes back? What if here kids don't want a vita? What if they like the 3DS games more? Why would hardware specs even matter? If someone tries to buy a PS3 will you tell them to wait for the PS4?

What you did would get your average sales-person fired.

Probably. That was a meaningless argument 6 years ago. Clearly if the DS could sell as many units as it has, over an extended period of time, becoming the best-selling handheld in the history of handhelds... its a *bit* more than just a gimmick.

That's fine, but I don't see why you're coming onto a gaming forum to tell us :? Maybe blog it.

Anyway, you created a potential sale. It won't be a sale until she buys it.

Ok Mr Mario Avatar. You need to calm down. She didnt buy tthe 3DS's and there is nothing you can do about it. I explained the better console to her and she being a smart individual made the educated choice of which to buy for herself. I was on cash too no commission for me from that sale, come to think of it even if there was I still would have done the same thing.

Ok heres how it should have gone

"So these are the latest handhelds right?"

"Yes, yes they are, it has glassesless 3D, big step up graphically and with online from the last DS, plus there are a lot of great games coming out at the end of the year... There is another handheld coming out next year, called the psvita, it has better tech and more online features, but there is no 3D and it is much larger than this system",

"Oh thats interesting"

"Who are you buying these for?"

"One for my Son who is seven and one for my husband"

"ok, well I suggest that you get the 3DS for your son because Nintendo handhelds are much more kid friendly, with games like Mario, Zelda and Pokemon, but for your husband you should get a PSVita, it has a lot of great games coming out as well but a lot of them aren't really suited for eight year olds like Killzone and Uncharted but should be right up your husbands alley, also the 3DS is a lot lighter and smaller and perfect for a kid, while the PSvita has a huge screen and is 80$ more expensive and might be a bit too delicate for a kid that young".

Ok my point is that you don't have to agree with any of what I said its that you didn't ask who she was buying them for because she obviously isn't buying 2 for herself and also you didn't ask what type of games she is interested in and you didn't outline any differences between the systems at all.. You just flat out said the psv is better in every way and there is nothing that the 3DS does better or differently. So instead of informing her you confused a woman looking for help with your nonsense biased opinion

LOL! are you serious dude? with 2 3ds and 5 games that's more than vita. and even if she was crushed maybe she would have came back to buy the vita which is more money. you are a horrible sales person. if you know a product is crap you are still suppose to sell it to the customer. im sure your manager would have pissed if he/she found out your talked a customer out of a sale. and the info you gave her wasn't educated at all. it's was your mere opinion. this i sony fanboysim at it's worse. sony fanboyism is now affecting their job performance.

While 'researching' it on the internet, what makes you think she won't buy it cheaper online? (Amazon usually do really good console/handheld bundles at launch) You lost a garunteed sale in favour of a possible sale...

SteamedBennet

From her growing enthusiasm with every word I said about the Vita, im pretty sure she wont be buying 3DS's. If she does that's fine, very unlikely however.

No, I meant the Vita. When it comes out what's to stop her buying it cheaper online after researching it?

Id be quite content if she did that actually, really doesn't bother me. As long as shes happy with the product that she wants. I would too if I didn't get a sweet employee discount.

You helped a customer make up her mind. That is your job. Nothing special.

No, his job is to make a sale, not convince a customer out of one.

All of you giving him a hard time need to stop being a hater because this guy is a better System Warrior than you. I mean instead of just arguing about which system wins, he did something about it, and went out and got a job so he can actually make one beat another. I nominate him System Warrior of the Year.

So you don't care that you just lost your company money (app. $450+)?

I didnt lose a sale, I created one. For an even more expensive product in the near future. You can all belly ache if you'd like, she asked for my opinion and I gave it. She should know about the Vita before she buys a 3DS, how crushed would she have been when it finally launched and she had already bought 3DS's? Also its not like you say, if a computer component came out I wouldnt say wait till next year for a better part. These are two completely different situations and you know it.specialzed
And how are you to know she will buy it at your store?

I've also sold many 3DS's but thanks to this thread I will now ask each and every 3DS buyer if they know of the Playstation Vita. Thank you system wars :)

So you're a one-man-army taking on the evil Nintendo and their uneducated, casual consumers? I'm sure you're on their top ten list of powerful enemies to be reckoned with and they are trembling in their collective boots. *roll* This is why I still bother coming to System Wars, you can't make this stuff up.
