Did you do the same thing when people tried to buy the DS instead of the PSP?
Also don't you get commission at game stores?

No, it isn't. He's not a salesman. It's not his job to make sales.
Actually, salesman convince people to not buy products all the time. If losing out on a sale now (in this case, a sale that meant almost no profit for the retailer) means garnering even more profit in the future through good consumer relations then a salesman will take that route. Not only that, making sure consumers are well informed about their purchases (which might mean losing out on a sale) is a way to decrease returns - something that pisses off many retailers.

How do you know she will even come back in the future? Whoever she's buying the games for may not be at all interested in the new PSP. It could be some kids. Chances are they're not going to choose Killzone over Mario.
Even if she does decide to buy it in the future, she could purchase it elsewhere, like Amazon.
A good salesman would ask who she's buying it for, at least. But that's not really what we're talking about.
I'm sure if you were a boss you'd would be somewhat pissed that one of your employees is steering away money.
There's no guarantee. However, because the consumer recognizes that you, as a salesman, do not see him/her as a dollar sign, they are more likely to trust your opinion in the future. That's how you can make some easier sales through friendly suggestions. She should at least be educated enough to know that there's more to the 3DS and Vita than Mario and Killzone respectively before she makes a purchase.
Fine, but like I said - HE'S NOT A SALESMAN.
No, I wouldn't. I'd question him about it, ask him how he dealt with it, and then react positively, negatively, or neutral. You have to think beyond instant gratification. Some money now (barely any of which - if any - would have been profit if she was only buying hardware) could mean less in the future. It could mean a return which sucks big time.
Mario and Killzone were just small examples, but you have a point.
You're right. And that also means he shouldn't be putting his own opinion onto the customers to make them change their mind. Salesman or not, he's supposed to encourage people to buy their current products.
It's not like she's thinking of spending only 50$. She's about to buy 2 ds's and some games. That alone is 200+ dollars lost for the small possibility that she'll be back later on next year to spend a little more.

I got alcohol related questions like that when I worked in a pub, usually about wine. Was I a fanboy for recommending a Pinot Grigio instead of the cheaper Black Tower to someone that wanted a medium dry white? Should I have been sacked for not pushing the cheaper product?
Its you people that are the fanboys, Nintendo defense league. I'm still looking forward to getting a 3DS too, when there's more than OoT available to buy (already have two copies).
I think what makes her an "uneducated buyer" is that she listened to someone telling here to not buy a handheld solely on hardware specs and not game quality.

She asked him a question - he didn't shove his opinion on her. The emphasis should have been put on "their" and "current" should have been taken out. All that matters is where people will be purchasing their items from. Retailers make return shipments themselves (but take a small hit I think) so overflow can be managed.
That's revenue. How much profit will the retailer make on the hardware? Next to nothing. How much on games? About 1/3 of the price tag goes to the business. That's not much they're losing out on.

"So these are the latest handheld's hey?" was the question. I would have answered similarly to TC. "She seemed puzzled so I gave her details on the Playstation Vita and how it compared to the 3DS in tech and games, I also gave her playstation's website so she could do some research of her own." I would have done the same. Customers trust those who are knowledgeable. You can't give a fair comparison if you're not knowledgeable (not sure if TC is).

What parts a lie? The Vita will be the next handheld arriving in early 2012 for the Western world. There are games and specs confirmed for the Vita as well. If he knows enough about both and their predecessors, he could do a far comparison. Being more popular doesn't really mean much in the gaming world. Yeah, if. She may go somewhere also and buy the Vita. Or, judging by how many ds's she's was going to buy, she's not buying them for herself, so whoever she's buying them for may not be interested in the psp.
But at least they'll have the chance to find out for themsleves, which I've discovered some people here are strongly against for their own agenda. sigh....[QUOTE="KBFloYd"]i honestly dont give a damn what gamers who work at a gamestore do with their time....but if you come to a forum and "BRAG" about it...then i start to get interested in commenting..
thats just wrong ethics imo.. and even might be bad advice if vitas games or popularity isnt up to her liking..
tomarlyn
i bet you my life she doesnt even know how to use a PC..

what part is a lie? obvoisly you dont understand english... 3DS is the latest handheld....VITA is a FUTURE handheld.
so your reading about a bunch of promised games which are just trailers right now..and iyo are better games than mario, starfox, zelda and others..and trutsing sonys specs like you did for the psp...look how that worked out..
that lady is not a gamer if she didnt know about vita... these people buy what is popular and everyone has...they are called casuals..KBFloYd
I do, actually. I understand that the TC told the woman when it was coming - in the future.
Not just trailers but also many playable demos. Not better but different. The FCC already had a list of specs, I believe, in their report. And if Sony lied, they would be sued for false advertisement.
No, they are not called casuals. They are called uninformed consumers. And the 3DS is not popular nor does everyone have one.
so you admit its a future handheld ...not the lastest one out ... the only reason she even asked was because of the attitude and face he made when he was ringing her up... i assure you.... BIAS...
they are casuals... that lady is a CASUAL... get over it.
But I still would have responded in the same way. Not telling a consumer that a future competitor will be coming onto the market in a relatively short time is dishonest and deceitful. What face? What attitude? Where are you pulling this BS from?
She was most likely buying those systems for her kids or something meaning that she's probably not a gamer. If she's not a gamer, how can she be a CASUAL gamer?

It's his job to promote his workplace, not individual products. As an employee of futureshop or w/e it is, he can't go around saying that Amazon is the best place to buy every game even if it's true.
minh800
It's his job to ensure they get a profit, not discourage them. There's nothing else to it. :?
Once again, no, it's not. He's not a salesman. It is not in his job description to make sales. It is no concern of his whether or not the company makes a profit because he's a cashier.
It's preferred he does not discourage people from buying.

Many places of business prefer good customer relations to pure sales even if it means discouraging sales. He never discouraged her from buying the systems. He gave her what info he had, she made a choice, and that's how things turned out.

You have some getting over to do aswel. Whats done is done. To make you feel better ,she most likely went back to talk with her kids and they'll pick what they want.I can tell you, that tc made the right decision. This is a case of where he was just simply showing the facts about ps vita.
He is atleast honest to let her know that there is other hand helds coming out very soon. Now im not sure how he gave these details but if he just presented them and even told her to do research, it means that her decision to not buy a 3DS was solely influenced by the fact that she did not know about this other handheld.
its perfectly fine.
But I still would have responded in the same way. Not telling a consumer that a future competitor will be coming onto the market in a relatively short time is dishonest and deceitful. What face? What attitude? Where are you pulling this BS from?

so you think every customers who buys a 3ds at a store needs to be told that the vita is coming out and will be superior? im sorry thats not how being a salesman works..
what face ? what attitude? i assure you he made one...or else she wouldnt even have asked....must have been the fact that she had TWO 3DSs and 5 games that disgusted him..
ok...then... HER KIDS are CASUAL gamers if they didnt know about vita....their whole house is a BIG CASUAL GAMER GATHERING PLACE..lol
... you can say he is being a good person...and he was doing his job...he was not lying in any way...thats fine but his post on this forum seems to say otherwise. i smell fish.
