I hope this is the right place to put this, if not Mods please lock.

With the anouncement of Warner going to Blu ray and leaving HD-DVD, Microsoft most defiantly won't intigrate a HD-DVD drive in it's console becuse HD-DVD is pretty much dead. So, next gen Sony will still be using Blu ray disc while the Xbox will still be using DVD9? Or will sony let Microsoft use thier format? Becuase with DVD9 it is NOT truly 1080p high definition. If Sony doesn't let M$ use their, format how will M$ make any games? Surely gamers will not want a played out DVD9 format:?

Oh, and one more thing, the Next PS3 will have a HD drive while the 360 won't. That will lead more people to buy the PS3, Am I right? Let me know what you guys think...

  1. Sony can always license Blu_ray out for other companies use.
  2. Microsoft can make their own format for game or whatever, just like Nintendo does, at least that's what I heard they do.

Why would sony not let microsoft use their disc format for the next gen. If that happens microsoft won't allow blu-ray drives be implemented into windows. Both will need each other if blu-ray does indeed become the next format.

Business is business, smart business people don't associate fanboy beliefs with business, if I were Sony I would say Hell yes, and get a cut out of every console sold, but hey lets not make more money and just be fanboys.

Sony wouldnt be allowed to deny MS the use of Blu_Ray it would be seen as anti competitive. Nor would they want to, no better way to ensure profitibility than having your fingers in your competitors cookie jar. Tis why MS owns so much of Apple, and EA own so much of Ubisoft.

blu-ray is owned by about 6 companys also yes sony could stop microsoft from using blu-ray next gen if some of the other companys back sony up but this idea would be stupid since sony would make moneyof everyblu-ray game microsoft sold

Sony would welcome MS using blu-ray with open arms...this would mean that their format would have won and it would help to flood the market with blu-ray players and line Sony's pockets with money from all the royalties associated with the increase sales and production of blu-ray disks.

Here is a wild thought though...what if MS goes with no onboard media drive what so ever and just puts a large HD in the system and makes everything a DL from Live or on some sort of flash drive that can be installed on the HD? I think this might be a possibility IMO.

I wont be buying another MS system but its more because of the upgrades in systems and the unreliability more than the format. Sony would let MS use BD for the sole fact that it would just help adoption and Sony would make money on every game sold on the system. It would be a win-win situation.

No it doesn't Sony owns the logo, but, like CD and SACD, it was developed with Philips.
Contributing to the development of the format were/are Panasonic, Pioneer, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp and Samsung.
The current Board of Directors is comprised of:

Apple
Dell
HP
Hitachi
LG
Mitsubishi Electric
Panasonic
Pioneer
Philips
Samsung
Sharp
Sony
Sun Microsystems
TDK
Thomson
Twentieth Century Fox
Walt Disney
Warner Bros.

well a few things here TC.

1) legally, i dont think sony are allowed to deny MS a licence to use blu-ray unless theres a very good reason (ie better than "we dont like them"). as long as MS pay the licencing fee and their drive meets all necessary blu-ray standards, MS can have blu-ray on their next console, or they can even release an addon for the 360. finally i dont think MS have to pay any fee unless the console actually plays blu-ray movies (if its the same system as the DVD system. ninty didnt have to pay the DVD guys a penny even tough they use a DVD drive in the wii. this is because wii doesent play DVD movies).

2) even if MS ignore current disc technologies, that doesent mean that they wont be able to have a better disc tech next gen. theres nothign stopping them from coming up with their own tech for game storage next gen. as long as patents arent infringed, there untouchable (and even of they do infringe, they can just licence from the patent holder). hell they can go back to carts of they want to (very very unlikely mind). there by no means stuck with DVD 9.

What exactly is stopping Microsoft from just releasing there games on just plain DVD? People get way to caught up with next gen formats and considering alot of PC games still come out on CD there is no reason for any thing bigger then DVD other then Sony making money by shoving it down your throats. And worst case scenario what is stopping Microsoft from putting a decent sized HDD in the 720 (or what every they call it) and you simply install the games off multiple discs onto the HDD (like what PC gamers have been doing with CD's for the last million years)?

It could still use a HD-DVD drive. The way things are looking Microsoft is looking more to downloadable movies than disk based movies. So they could still use a HD-DVD drive for the games.

The next MS system can just have Bluray. Sony doesn't "OWN" the technology outright. Even if it did, in that make-believe scenario Sony would STILL welcome it's use by MS because (a) it would further solidify it's technology; and (b) keep MS from denying Sony the use of Windows on their laptops.

One more thing, a format isn't 1080p, that is measure of monitor/tv definition. A DVD9 disc is perfectly capable of containing information that eventually comes across your screen in 1080p, just not AS MUCH information. The edge of Bluray is in capacity, not definition. It's all 1s and 0s dude.

i'd be surprised if sony actually used blu-ray themselves next gen. they haven't used the same format for any of their consoles so far. ps1 used CD's, ps2 used DVD's, and the ps3 used blu-ray discs.

Sony didnt make Blu-ray, they helped found it but they dont own the rights to it. Also 1080p can be released on a DVD but it would limit the ammount of data you can put on the disc since higher resolutions take up more space.

What do you mean the next "360" will not have a HD while the next "PS3" will?

So, next gen Sony will still be using Blu ray disc while the Xbox will still be using DVD9? Or will sony let Microsoft use thier format? Becuase with DVD9 it is NOT truly 1080p high definition. If Sony doesn't let M$ use their, format how will M$ make any games? Surely gamers will not want a played out DVD9 format:?

Oh, and one more thing, the Next PS3 will have a HD drive while the 360 won't. That will lead more people to buy the PS3, Am I right? Let me know what you guys think...

Tech-Man08

They will just use DVD drive, you know why ? Because they will make xbox720 with a standard HDD, and games can install from 1-2 DVD's, then play with a 3rd, like PC

Xbox360 is already dead over and over again. who killed it you ask? RROD did. MS are the one who killed the 360 themsevles.

Gam3smar7

That must be why the 360 outsells the PS3 in every region except Japan, why the Xbox 360 exclusive Halo 3 is the fastest selling entertainment product of all time, why Xbox 360 software sales are 2X that of PS3 and Wii software sales combined, and why the PS3 is well known as a failure.

When it comes to business, it's best to keep your "fanboy chocolate" out of your "total profit peanut butter."

Thats the stupidest thing ever.. of course sony would let them use Bluray, they would make money from it.

Anyhow.. they don't have a problem with letting windows support bluray (might be because any format would die without windows supporting it).

Does MS refuse to let SONY put Vista on its laptops? The rivalry does not really extend pass the consoles.

I don't see why it can't use BR.

Becuase Blu Ray belongs to Sony, and As we all know, Sony and M$ aren't the best of pals.

I'm pretty sure MicroSoft already make money off the Codecs that BD uses.

DVD9 helps keep the price low and even it will go lower but Sony isn't going to sell a cheap Blu-ray, super computer, and whatever else they clamed it to be.

Sony's mistake was mostly Blu-ray and the cell

Sony aren't going to say no you cannot pay us royaltys for using our media  if anything they will probably love the fact the MS would have to use it. That said Im sure MS has the resources to make their own format. And on a final note why are you saying the 360 will be in trouble next gen? no **** it will be obsolete :|.
