You're really starting to blur the lines between a PC and a console. However if I paid $1000 for something, I would want it to do far more than play games and watch movies. You use a PC for much more than entertainment.

Unless it's made by Apple, then the price is justified. ;)
obviously I'm kidding, I would never pay that much for a console, I bought a PS3 at launch and that's as much as I'll ever pay for one.
I would ignore it. The reason why gaming PCs are around that price is because they're also used for the office, homework, web browsing, video editing, there's too much functions for me to list.

True but if someone buys a computer with the latest i7 processor and gtx 590 sli for example its primary use is obviously gaming. A pc of this spec is really not much better at *most* non gaming related tasks than a much more modest rig

Bacon and ham with a side of too expensive console Seriously, I don't think people would buy a Console for 1000$, especially when you already have a PC That can do what that console does + a lot more.

Well i can get a pc for a third of that price that would do non gaming tasks just as well. Anyone who spends over $1000 on a computer is gonna be using it for gaming or perhaps their work demands it. You would, well at least i wouldnt, spend over $1000 on a pc just to do homework or office work ^^

And for the record i would never spend this much on a console, but i thought with the amount of threads dedicated to graphics on system wars, the lure of a machine with this power would be irresistable for some....

There is more to PC gaming than just hardware power, there is a fundamental difference in culture between console and PC platforms. Consoles are closed proprietary dictatorships; where as PC is a open platform that is customizable to individual user needs. You cannot beat PC at its own game without becoming it.

EDIT: You also have to think about how big such a console would be...

If Sony had put a price tag on the PS3 for what it actually cost them plus a small profit, gamers would have been looking at around $900 for it at launch. Sony is taking a loss on the hardware but making up for it with software sales (ever wonder why console games cost up to $20 more than a PC game?).

Red Orchestra 2 will be $39.95 at release. There are still plenty of PC games that sell at $40 (though I bought FSX Deluxe for $60). Console games are selling at $60 unless I am missing something.

Not only this, but also consoles always seem to fail these days, and on top of it, PC's are customizable. It is not JUST about beign powerful, but also about being whatever you want and doing whatever you want. There are still restrictions and flaws in a console, and if that changed they would be PC's :P.

most PC games launch at $50 :? i don't know where you're getting $40 games from, except from that one game....unless you're looking at games that have been out for a little while and have gotten a price drop?

For that kinda dollar i'd expect absolute openness, the freedom to create things or at least have tools available to do so. Like Wasdie said you are blurring the PC and console together, also i'd expect massive support from very rich develop teams and publishers who can fund such games you speak of and plenty of them. I mean a GTA 5 running triple 1080p screens in full 3D at 100FPS with the best anti-aliasing and all the other bells and whistles would be an enormous feat of development and would cost multi-millions.

If the games were made like it were for PC, then heck yes!

If all it did was play games then no. I would just keep using my PC, which can do a million other tasks also. Besides, PC's would pass it up eventually anyway in the hardware department, making it obsolete.

I wouold still stick with PC because PC will play all my older PC games, this new console wouldn't. Not to mention I use my PC for a lot more than just gaming. Not to mention a console that is way more powerful than any gaming PC would cost a hell of a lot more than $1,000.

dom2000

I don't think people understand what you are proposing here. PC developers make games for the lowest commond denominator. In most cases that means they make games for current gen consoles. If you have a PC you can get better textures, res, aliasing and fps. But that's very different than having a game built from the ground up to take advantage of the latest hardware.

If a game console was released for $1,000 it would have seriously wicked specs. CPU would be an i7 based Quad core CPU at 3.8 - 4.2 Ghz, a next gen Radeon that replaces the HD 6990, let' scall it the Radeon HD 7990, 16 GB of shared system RAM and a 2 terabyte hard drive.

With those specs it would be an absolute monster. It would be a considerable step beyond the PS4 and Xbox 720. The games would make moded Crysis and GTA 4 look ugly by comparison.

People just say oh PC is better but that's not true. Because no one will develop games for PC with such a high lowest common denominator. It's going to take the PC maybe another 6 - 10 years to achieve the graphics that this proposed uber console could do right now.

All this "PC wins plus it can do your homework" talk is just ignorance.

Too expensive to take off, so no. Without enough owners to justify the effort and expense, optimization simply won't happen - or even releases, for that matter.

No, i would not spend that much for something that just purely plays games. I use my gaming PC for alot more than just playing games. And even in the realm of playing games PC has alot more capablity for flexiblity and community impact on the game.

Because PC is not pushing the graphics foward. All you're doing is gaming with Xbox graphics plus a little more res and fps. This has been going on since 2005. A $1,000 console would actually push the graphics envelope through the stratosphere.
