We get your point.... IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!

Ofcourse pcs would eventually catch up and surpass even this console, and i would say this console would actually accelerate that as the market for high end cards would be greater....but this console wud be the exclusive king for at least 2 years i would say considering there is not enough computers that could even dream of playing those games to warrant a slightly stripped down port!dom2000
Do you even know what you are saying? This is all hypothetical right? Because consoles could never surpass PCs in graphics.
If a console has great hardware in it then you can be sure PCs have better hardware available to them.
For a system strictly designed for gaming that is a lot to pay.

These are the ignorant replies that disturb me. HTPCs are not for gaming. They usually have very budget silent cards. But even in the alternate universe this guy lives in where HTPCs have i7 @ 4.0 Ghz, 16 GB of RAM and a 6990 GPU, you would still end up playing Xbox games with higher res and fps. Because no one is developing games that take full advantage of high end PCs now.
If a console was released for $1000, it better be 2x better than a gaming PC at $1000.
With that said, it is a concept that could never happen, because PC's would just use the same exact hardware seeing as it is the "most powerful", and would integrate it for PC use.
Meh, too much money. In the end it will still be a console with fixed hardware and will eventually end up replaced for being outdated. In that case it's much better something around $300-$400 every 5 years or something.
glez13
I agree with you but times are changing. Now that we are seeing console cycles upwards of 7 years it makes sense that they start off with beefier hardware. I don't know if it calls for a $1,000 console but at least that is thought in the correct direction IMHO. Anyone who wants a $300 console that lasts 10 years is not being realistic.
If a console was released for $1000, it better be 2x better than a gaming PC at $1000.
xYamatox
That's impossible. The statement contradicts itself. There needs to be a medium from where a console game can be made and that's PC. You can't build better games for console if PC is limited.
[QUOTE="AmazonTreeBoa"]Oh i have gone nowhere...the majority of the negative comments of this thread consist of "but i use my pc for other things, paying $1000 for a dedicated gaming machine is far too expensive" which i already countered in the first page with "Well i can get a pc for a third of that price that would do non gaming tasks just as well. Anyone who spends over $1000 on a computer is gonna be using it for gaming or perhaps their work demands it. You would, well at least i wouldnt, spend over $1000 on a pc just to do homework or office work ^^" which basically has been ignored so far. I dont think this is beyond the realms of possiblity, the most unlikely thing would be having good 1st and 3rd party support as the companys would be taking a massive risk with a console aimed only at the most hardcore gamers. The actual hardware of the console i think could be doable. If for example they used slightly beyond the highest end gpu out now (which if the xbox 360 had have been released a few months earlier it would have been..." and a very powerful processer with good ram. Ofcourse cooling this monster would be a problem but lets assume they have a few clever individuals that came up with some innovative and efficient ways to cool it. Just think of how good this machine would look at 1080p.....optimised for all that power.....i really dont think those of you with money would not get it...just because you cant do your homework on it ^^ .... You're right that PCs would catch up to and overtake it eventually. But in a couple of years when PCs overtake it, the price of the system would be way down. Like half the original price or less.
Absolutely no way. I'm a gamer, but I'm not spending that much money on a gaming device. I could take the PS3's 600 bucks, but 1000 is ridiculous. And I don't buy the systems for technology either, so I wouldn't find it justifiable to pay that much just for high-end technology.
I would need to have games that would justify me buying it for such huge ammount. Consoles generally lack such titles....and had mouse and keyboard support, how many people, specifically pc gamers, would buy it? Let me stress, this hypothetical console would have hardware superior to the highest end pcs today which, along with optimistion, would make the graphics years ahead of what the pc could achieve!

Xplode_games
Not really. Its a completely fair and legitamate argument. How is saying "I can game on my PC, watch movies as well as do my homework" ignorant? Please enlighten me.
Because PC is not pushing the graphics foward. All you're doing is gaming with Xbox graphics plus a little more res and fps. This has been going on since 2005. A $1,000 console would actually push the graphics envelope through the stratosphere.
"little more res and fps" to you is 2-3 times more res and fps? not to mention that console use low settings vs high settings that the pc use.
They seem to be pushing graphics forward just fine in their most popular genre, which is strategy.Because PC is not pushing the graphics foward. I don't think people understand what you are proposing here. PC developers make games for the lowest commond denominator. In most cases that means they make games for current gen consoles. If you have a PC you can get better textures, res, aliasing and fps. But that's very different than having a game built from the ground up to take advantage of the latest hardware.
If a game console was released for $1,000 it would have seriously wicked specs. CPU would be an i7 based Quad core CPU at 3.8 - 4.2 Ghz, a next gen Radeon that replaces the HD 6990, let' scall it the Radeon HD 7990, 16 GB of shared system RAM and a 2 terabyte hard drive.
With those specs it would be an absolute monster. It would be a considerable step beyond the PS4 and Xbox 720. The games would make moded Crysis and GTA 4 look ugly by comparison.
People just say oh PC is better but that's not true. Because no one will develop games for PC with such a high lowest common denominator. It's going to take the PC maybe another 6 - 10 years to achieve the graphics that this proposed uber console could do right now.
All this "PC wins plus it can do your homework" talk is just ignorance.
Thank you :D There is at least one person that sorta gets wat im trying to say...although i doubt it would take quite as long as 6-10years for the pc to catch up...think of how much weaker graphics cards where 6-10 years ago! That said the graphics on this thing would be mindblowing, and pc gamers would rejoice because the power of their machines may actually be used instead of playing the latest muliplat at >1080p at x32aa with over 100fps..... This console would be a massive fianical risk and i doubt any companys would have the balls to realise it...espically with the mostly negative responses from the more hardcore gamers on this site....probably their target audience! What I meant when I said 6 - 10 years is that is how long it would take for game graphics to reach the level of graphics the $1,000 console could give us today.
If the $1,000 console were to be released let's say in december of 2012, it would take 6 to 12 months for high end PCs to be able to run the games maxed. I think it would be great for PCs if such a console were introduced because it would greatly enhance PC graphics and would wake up the GPU market. There would actually be a point in owning a 6990 other than to mine for bit coins.
If there $1,000 console is not released then PC graphics wait until the 720 and PS4 are released until they receive a major bumb. But even that major bump would leave them way behind the 1k console. Let's say the PS3 and 720 will both be out by 2014. By the end of their life cycles is when PC graphics would be much higher. Let's say by 2020 PC graphics would be killing the 720 and PS4.
My point is graphics will reach the same level of the $1,000 console even if it's never released. But it won't be until the year 2018 at the earliest. If the console is released in 2012, then we'll have those amazing graphics next year.

It sounds like you trying to say pc gamers cant justify pc gaming. Pc gamer talk a lot about pc and mouse controls...yea. MOST seem to like their high specs.....yea. Not all pc gamers have top of the line cards, a beauty to pc gaming that you can find on consoles. But mostly its the experience. PC gaming experience cant be found on consoles by just doing what you said. I can't overclock my machine, I can't use mods for my games, I cant expand upon the resolution, I can't enjoy powerful online connectivity, I cant download Just about every game in my library(which saves me a trip to the store), I cant enjoy competitive infrastructure the pc games allow you to partake without leaving your chair. Among many things TC i can name things like: world editors (which many pc games allow you to use to expand upon your game), expandability of your system (which allows you to save money instead of buying a new console every 6 years) Infinite LAN connectivity and FINALLY.......everything else non GAMING RELATED. PC Gaming is on a whole different level then console.(Many things i didnt mention, wont even touch steam)
So basically a $1000 non-upgradable gaming PC?...and had mouse and keyboard support, how many people, specifically pc gamers, would buy it? Let me stress, this hypothetical console would have hardware superior to the highest end pcs today which, along with optimistion, would make the graphics years ahead of what the pc could achieve!

Why would I buy that when a $1000 PC would most likely be superior and in 6 months PCs would be ahead once again ? It's still a static hardware config where PCs would evolve. Also why would I buy a console where console users pay $10 more than us for games AT MINIMUM and console users pay for online on the 360, and have next to no mods for their games ?
I wouldn't buy it because nobody would support it. Dev costs would be very high, and you'd face the exact same problems PC's are facing. This new console would only be held back by every other console out there in the market. Also, very few would spend $1000 so I'm sure the company producing this console would either stop, or go bankrupt.
Like the first guy who replied to you, I would want my 1k console to do more than just entertainment. But, I can get all of that in a much cheaper PC.
Also, I doubt consoles will ever be able to match the high end PCs, Im not saying it isnt possible... it certainlly is. But the thing is. PC hardware is always advancing, so much so that some of the hardware still isnt being used even by the games that demand high end pc hardware. Even if a console maker, any of them, are able to match, maybe even surpass High end PCs, it wont last, not a year, not even half a year.

Geforce 8800 was released a few days ahead of PS3. Let alone the 7800GTX in 2005 was faster then the 360's gpu overall.Well there is still a lot of stuff I would need to do besides gaming that my PC does and this console wouldn't. So I would still buy a PC. Cheaper games for PC vs this console and well as BC on PC.
I can do more with my PC than you can a caonsole. I would also like to be able to upgrade its hardware overtime. I would also like it to be completely open source and customizable. I would also like to use Steam, Xfire, D2D, GoG, and any other program to get my games from. I would also like support for any input device that I could think of and not just M/Kb. I would also like for one company to not own it. Oh yea, I have that device already, it is my PC.
No PC gamer would switch to it. I would get it if it had good exclusives, but I would continue to play the rest of my games on my PC. People think that all PC gamers care about is graphics, but really we like choices.
Unless it's a PC, you'd unlikely be able to upgrade it, so basically you pay $1000 for something that's stuck with hardware from that year while PCs gradually improve and beat the console in specs. Also, that's too much for a machine primarily used for gaming, especially when it's not going to be very good at in a few years and won't be upgradable.

Even if that was the case and it was being sold at a loss, I would STILL game on my PC. I might buy it, but it would be unlikely even to change my primary platform.
