If Activision cut support for the PS3, Activision would be dead, not the PS3.

[QUOTE="DeadMagazines"]Lol..the damage control in here is thick. "What does Acti even have other than cod & guitar hero" ..right, cause those games don't sell millions of copies right? And if they ceased producing them for the ps3, a whole slew of new 360 owners would flood the market so they could play the new COD or GH. Cows act like just because these franchises don't appeal to them that somehow others can't like them..and you also seem to think that Acti is incapable of making new IPs that would cease to exist on the Sony platform in the future. Good luck at that.dragonpuppy

Let's suppose they did drop support. Then what? Where will they make up for the roughly 40% revenue loss? And please don't even try to say that it will be made up by new people purchasing their games. Yes there will be some, but to say they will entirely eclipses the loss of revenue from PS3 sales is laughable.

They will make most of the money back by saving money from not having to put up with the PS3's ridiculous development costs.

Ya this is the point i was trying to make as well, do people here honestly think that 20+ million people are going to run out and purchase a 360 the day Activision drops PS3 support in order to negate the lack of the PS3 market ? because if you think that then you're dead wrong. Activision will be hit with a 40%~ hole in their earnings that year, although that number will decline after a few years as more and more people buy 360's the damage could already be done. Lets break it down It took the 360 3 and half years to sell 30 million~ so we can say that on average the 360 sells 8.5~ million a year ( 30 million / 42 * 12) now in order for the 360 to sell enough to negate a loss it will take around 2 and half years,i don't think Activisions share holders will be happy with that that sort of a loss and for that long. Im just trying to put this in a rough perspective for people, theres just too many variable to work it out accurately like rate of sales, another price cut, of the underbase how many owners are actually going to buy their games etc.

no they wouldnt... if they arent making a profit now on ps3 games then they would have dropped it alot sooner then when they are threating to, infact the only games that have "rediculous" development costs are 1st party games that are directly financed by sony anyways

Have you actually calculated the PS3's development costs and the 360's development costs versus the revenue made by selling games on the PS3 and 360?

I wouldn't say dead, but unless Sony are able to pull a CoD of their own, they will be at a very distant 3rd place. CoD console exclusivity for the 360 would be quite the advantage for Microsoft. There is the Wii version but we all know THAT doesn't matter.

Hmm, i wonder how much MS payed that activisiion guy to say that? LOL , do you know how much money they will lose if they do so? they are not losing any money what so ever by releasing games on the ps3, all of their releases for the ps3 sell millions of copies and they always turn profit, this is just some b.s. that will never happen

But really though. CoD and Guitar Hero are extremely popular. If Acti dropped Sony then there would be a flood of new 360 owners. It is a fact. People crave CoD.

They won't, there is no way they would drop 140, 23 and 50 million userbases

hyperboy152000

What the heck are the 140 and 50 million user bases? T he PS3 has 3 seperate user bases now? Activision never mentioned dropping Sony Support altogether. What I find really funny about this entire thing is the constant "We are comfortable with the PS3 price point and have no plans to drop the price" comments that they make all the time after the rumors come out, when in my opinion, the only reason they ARE saying this is that when people hear about a price drop they STOP purchasing systems at the current prices so you continue to reassure your soon to be fanbase "we have no plans on a price drop" Which gets people to continue to purchase the system at its current price, but I guarantee that Sony is thinking "we need to drop the price soon..." My guess is a holiday price drop(october/november), but seeing as that is still months away, Sony needs to keep the interested consumer believing that there is no price drop in the forseeable future. Sony would be stupid to NOT drop the price, even if they started losing money on the system. That didn't stop them before. Personally I applaud Activision. I have said it before. Sony Fanboys who are yet to purchase the system due to cost should be applauding them as well. If activision is publicly stating this, you know there are other devs who are doing it behind the scenes.

its the install bas of the ps2 (140 million) psp (50 million) and ps3 (~23 million)

I know what they were. I was pointing out that Activision wouldn't stop supporting the PS2 or the PSP. They never once said they would stop supporting sony. And to the person that thinks Sony would just drop licensing Activision products on the PS2, yeah, sure. They claim that dropping the price of the Ps3 would put them in to much of a whole, you believe dropping the largest third party publisher would HELP them? Isn't Guitar Hero one of the only things that still sells on the PS2? I would even be willing to bet that people simply BUY PS2s for all the guitar hero games.

I wouldnt care, the COD series died after COD2 for me. There are virtually no games i want from activision, the last game they released that i was remotley interested in was prototype, and i went against buying it because of the company they have become. I am not buying an activision game again, unless they clean up their act like EA has done. So go right again activision cut ps3 support, you wont be missed.

Activision has nothing to do with a price cut. First party dev party is too strong for ps3 to dead. No other devs have reason to back away from ps3 because they actually make money off it. Especially not EA. We still get MW2. Other than that anything else Activision can take away is pointless and can be replace.

whatisazerg

What everyone always leave out though (you included) is if they can make up that "small profit" by being exclusive.

As I am sure you know, 3rd party publishers have to pay the console manufacturers a royalty fee per game sold. The fee is negotiable, and usually a lower fee is charged for an exclusive game and/or a known high seller. If MS gives them a lower rate to be 360 only, it could negate any loss in profit by stopping PS3 development.

So they would make the same (or more) andspend less (by not having to fund ps3 development).

Call of Duty? The FPS genre is bloated as it is without YET ANOTHER installment of the borefest that is COD. Pass.

Guitar Hero? No thanks Rock Band is better. Next!

Next,,,,,? What do you mean there's nothing else left?

Blizzard good, Activision bad. Stick with PC thanks.

Sony would be hurt... yeah.... but Activision would be hurt too. It would be a stupid move on Activisions part.... small profit >>>> no profit for Activision

TBoogy

What everyone always leave out though (you included) is if they can make up that "small profit" by being exclusive.

As I am sure you know, 3rd party publishers have to pay the console manufacturers a royalty fee per game sold. The fee is negotiable, and usually a lower fee is charged for an exclusive game and/or a known high seller. If MS gives them a lower rate to be 360 only, it could negate any loss in profit by stopping PS3 development.

So they would make the same (or more) andspend less (by not having to fund ps3 development).

NO Just wrong, They said they would not support any playstation platform. Those money hungry scumbags would be pissed. And MS would never do that. They like money too.

activision are the biggest money chasers available. if they can make money they will. if major devs did drop the ps3 which is 100% unlikely then yes the ps3 would be in big trouble.

i just think this so called 'threat' from Activision is plain and simple BS.. Their good titles sell well on PS3 with its 23 million install base which is expected to keep growing.. Activision's aim is to make profit so it would be stupid for them to sell millions of copies less for their upcoming titles by stopping support for PS3..

They just want Sony to announce a Price-cut because they know that would sky-rocket sales figures for PS3 which with a larger install base would mean possibly more PS3 copies for their games sold.. so if they just want to sell more copiesfor their gameshow the hell can they afford to stop support for PS3 ????

Activision should just worry about releasing/publishing great games, those will surely sell well whether or not PS3 gets a price-cut..

Activision merely put Sony in the spotlight to pressure them into a price-drop. Sony called the bluff and now nothing's going to happen.

Even IF they did, the PS3 is just fine as far as genres go. The ps3 has resistance 2 and killzone 2 to cover the fps area. And rockband to cover "plastic music makers" genre. I just don't see what the fuss is about. PS3 owners could just play cod on their computers anyway. Just saying.

and dont tell me EA or freinds will take over PS3 because if Activision think PS3 is fail then so will EA and then if EA backs out on PS3 then other smaller devs will as well. Bout time a credible dev like Activision took charge and threatened Sony. Might see PS3s cheaper now if Sony arn't fools.Dweedledude5000
rofl, if Activision custs support for the PS3 you will see Activisions revenue drop a TON as well. How well do you think that will play with the stock holders?

You don't really know that. Games for the 360 and Wii are cheaper and take a shorter period of time to make than games for the PS3. If Activision were to cut support from the PS3 then they would have those same programmers make games for the Wii or 360. The question that Activision has would they more money by not making the PS3 ports of games but rather focus on making more games for other systems. It's a good question but without their data it would be hard sitting here from the sideline saying what would be best. .

sony dont take threats from publishers, and you watch if activision shut up shop, ps3 will start rolling in sales and guess who will say they didnt mean it. and activision is only one publisher who sell COD and guitar hero, theres always enough replacements to keep us happy

Anti-gamers at their finest.. People should be more concerned with Activision taking the gamers to the cleaners with all their DLC.

lvgaming
Guitar Hero anyone?
