.... To go full third party?

Let's be real here... None of us owe Nintendo, or anyone else a single cent of our hard earned money... So, if the NX turns out to be a crusty shill of an idea and Nintendo confirms to the world it has gone off the grid yet again, how long should Nintendo wait to simply focus on quality software?

For me, it's pretty much the announcement. Another unorthodox, industry unfriendly console design and I'm hoping for Zelda on Xbox and playstation. Legacy catalog soon to follow.

Bring Zelda to Xbox and that's about all I need from them, I'm good to go.

From my perspective it's the other side which I no longer see the point in supporting. Supporting Nintendo do is more like supporting the dedicated game console market, than simply one game company.

Sony and Microsoft have made it very clear that the way in which they want consoles to be sold will be more akin to the smartphone market. Software development will suffer because of this. A new box every two years with zero optimization necessary.

It has more to do with the fact that this some topic pops up constantly and doesn't really provide for any discussion. It's just begging for something to happen and results in a fight between circlejerkers.

Id say never. Theyd probably find something else to do. Theyd make movies most likely like Disney. Without Nintendo this industry is no fun, its stale and boring.

@Heirren: I actually agree with the entire sentiment of what you're saying. My problem is, a console is a multi hundred dollar investment and while I agree ms and Sony scare the crap out of me with the destruction they can cause in this hobby with upgraded consoles and charging for online etc.... Its reeeeally hard for me to jump in on the dedicated console when it's not making compelling content. . Theres got to be more there for me to support it outside of just being a dedicated console... But I hope they do.

4-5 years. they still need to give the NX its run and try and recoup some of the R&D costs.

though really they shouldnt go third party. it wont work out well for them. it would be sega all over again. they would be better off looking to a different industry entirely. amiibo has been a success...maybe a switch away from computer games and more towards action figures and board games (and licensing IP for things like TV shows, which has also worked well for them) would be more suitable.

it wouldnt be the first time nintendo has switched industries.

@techhog89: well, truth be told, it's not really something I think about all that much, but with the newly minted rumor mill surrounding the NX and given they just pushed the release to 2017 and seemingly have a meager catalog through 2016, I thought the conversation is actually relevant. How long is your leash for more Nintendo bafoonery?

What conversation? "Hey, Nintendo sucks at hardware and should go third-party. I know that NX is terrible because Wii U is. Who agrees with my completely original topic?" Like, can we at least wait for NX to be revealed before having this topic yet again? I guess that's just what to expect on a board called "system wars" though; just fanboys and trolling instead of actual discussion, and if I know that if anyone mentions a counter-argument it'll be met with, "no, you're wrong, fanboy" like every topic here on anything. I'm still trying to figure out if this board is just a parody or not.

@TheEroica:

But it starts with the console manufacturer. The company behind it instills the policies and structure. It has reached a point where big 3rd parties run the show. Nintendo would do things differently and the proof is how they have been resisting the subscription method.

@techhog89: so you have no feelings about the potential industry impact of Nintendo next console nor it's potential impact with software? It doesn't tickle your interest even a little bit to wonder what could happen to their ip if this next iteration of Nintendo gaming doesn't catch on?

It sounds like you've been interacting with the wrong people... Discussions aplenty around here for people wishing to have them.

@Heirren: which is something I support... The 60 down payment for games followed by 40 dollars more to have the entire experience is beyond lame.

That said, my playstation 4 got a dump truck load of amazing games this month (all psn games) that allow me to skip the sterile AAA space. Meaning, there is still a lot right going on with the companies finding success.

@TheEroica: This isn't a new conversation. I've had it a million times already. I'd at least like to know what NX is before calling it failed crap and saying what Nintendo should do next.

Not to mention the fact that you said "if NX flops hard" then set your opinion for the moment NX is announced. If you want to be realistic though, Nintendo is stubborn as hell and will go down with the ship before putting games on other consoles. If NX flops, they'll either make another console or focus on handhelds and/or mobile. You'll never see Zelda on PlayStation or Xbox.

4 years.

If by 4 years and the NX did not pick up anymore steam than what the WiiU did they'll probably go Mobile/Toy and we'll start seeing re-releases of their classic games on other Platforms.

The Sad thing is if/when that happens we won't see anymore of that high quality Nintendo we are so used to seeing.

The most we'll be getting from Nintendo is the B grade tier Support. It'll still be Nintendo, but not Super Mario Galaxy or Xenoblade levels of Awesome.

@iandizion713: they fall a little each generation. Sadly. I never write them off... Mario maker was exceptional and I love the remote screen concept, though not the design of the game pad itself. But none of this actually pertains to the OP. If the hardware design handicaps Nintendo in any way from competing in the console space and the NX looks to be a dud... Wont you want Nintendo games to live on? Would you be ok with their games going third party?

I think I might be done buying non-Nintendo consoles after this gen. If Nintendo went third party, I'd be PC only. The other consoles just cost way too much to justify the 1 or 2 games per year that I want to play on them.

@TheEroica: I wouldnt want Nintendo to go third party cause i know what will happen, they will have to downsize. Nintendo also wouldnt be operating at full potential. Im always more against a creator working for and under another creator.

If that day ever come, i think Nintendo should shut down and just open as small studios.

I dont think they'll ever go 3rd party. They have enough funds to keep developing new consoles for quite some time and I think they will, looking for the anomaly that was the Wii.

5 years.... ago. From a bird's eye persepctive the only reason for Nintendo to make hardware is if they add something unique to the table. However it seems to me that the unique things they are doing to justify making their own hardware have a negative impact on their software (Star fox is the latest example). Not to mention that it shuts out a lot of potential consumers.

But the NX will not fail hard, or fail at all, so the discussion will be moot.

@charizard1605: Noted, for future reference.

Everything hinges on NX for Nintendo. Assuming the worst and it fails to take off, Nintendo needs to put out everything they possibly can before pulling the plug. This means 2.5 years. If NX hasn't picked up steam by the end of 2019, Nintendo should be developing its next batch of software for other platforms.

Agreed. If there's no Nintendo, then no console for me. The other consoles are pretty much pointless if you've got a PC.

As for the topic, I highly doubt Nintendo will ever go third-party. Not in any near future, at least.

Not really. Any "potential customers" without hardware aren't even "potential" at all, considering they've moved long passed Nintendo at this point.

I wish they'd gone 3rd party a long time ago, but that's just me.

I hope the NX is a smash hit success with strong hardware and fantastic 1st and 3rd party games. A new SNES in other words. But if not, after 3 to 4 years of WiiU style game droughts and gamer disinterest? Yeah, 3rd party then.

To people saying they couldn't or wouldn't make games for other systems. That's simply ludicrous, Mario and Pokemon alone are multi billion dollar brandnames, you think a business chucks that in the trash so they can stay "pure" to what fanboys want? Lol. And let's not pretend Nintendo's artists, designers and coders would somehow get confused by programming to a PlayStation or PC.

I don't know how this applies to anything I've said...

Look, I'm just saying that there have been enough "Nintendo should go third-party" threads and that this isn't going to add anything to this overdone discussion. You've already decided that they need to go third-party, and the way that this thread is presented if not one which fosters discussion, but rather one where you're looking for other people to agree with you to confirm your opinion. The proof of this comes from the fact that you've narrowed this discussion down to "Nintendo will go third-party after NX flops, so how long should they wait?" To make it worse, you're saying that they shouldn't wait and should just cancel it after they announce it and start porting their games over, which doesn't make sense and is hardly even on-topic unless you're saying that it can somehow flop directly after being announced.

But fine, I'll give an answer... Uh... Like at least a day. There, I contributed to this riveting discussion. What do I win?

The video game crash only happened in NA. Nintendo gets too much credit.

Also, people didn't stop playing video games entirely, they just stopped buying consoles and software in great numbers for a specific amount of time, but they were still playing Arcade games.

Nintendo simply rejuvenated the console industry in NA.

They revitalized the console industry. We owe them that. But it is ignorant to assume that no one else would have picked up the gauntlet, especially considering that gaming was still alive and well on the PC.

Nintendo will never work for Playstation or Xbox. If anything they'll start a digital dist. platform like steam and make all their new games on PC. And if they want to experiment with any new "gimmicks" they can release special USB controllers instead of consoles.

To be fair, we also owe them, ironically, almost every component of a modern traditional controller. It's funny to think about that one, isn't it?

@techhog89: my wish is that Nintendo makes a competitive console on par or exceeding today's popular consoles. My hope is that they nurture new experiences, continue franchises that deserve attention, create an online space that doesn't make excuses for things like voice chat, make a playground of space for cutting edge independent games and unleash the fury if the greatest backlog of games in human history...

Suggesting I want anything else is pure fiction.

We've gone back and forth a few times, but still I feel like you're waiting for the fanboy/hater rant that isn't coming. Isn't it more fun to discuss?

Also, to further the context of my original post, yes, I was unhappy with my GameCube purchase for the first two to three years... I was unhappy with my wii purchase despite the excellent virtual console experience... And the wiiu didn't do much to ignite my reinvestment in Nintendo gaming to any degree...

The NX can change all that and Nintendo has the power to make it happen with SOFTWARE. if their hardware cripples them from being part of the conversation, Ihave no qualms of saying I'd rather them simply make games. Cant imagine what's wrong with that logic... Can you?
