No. The PSP never beat the DS, but to call the PSP a failure is just foolish. Similarly, even if the Vita never beats the 3DS, it is not necessarily a failure as long as it sells well in its own regard.

It would depend on how the 3DS does. It the 3DS bombs, and and the Vita can't beat it, then yeah. Otherwise, the PSP didn't beat the DS, and it was in no way a failure.

I think the chances of Vita beating the 3DS at least sales wise is near impossible, but I think Sony's aim is to do better than the PSP did, which Im sure it will do. If the Vita sells less than the PSP did, then I guess that would be more considered a failure.

It wont be a failure but i dont think it would outsell the 3DS because Nintendo cares for the casual market and it this gen is anything to learn from,casuals outweigh hardcore gamers

Yeah there is some pretty strong software coming soon. If i can resist long enough, I will probabaly buy the 3DS shortly after the Vita comes out, because I reckon there will be a price drop around then
I don't get why people continue to say the psp was a failure. It was the handheld closest to Nintnendos numbers... ever. Also it actually has sold more units than the xbox 360, is the 360 a failure?
no way sony is to the point where it can take on ninetndo...but anyone that would call something that sold 70 mill units a "failure" is crazy. the Vita needs to focus on pushing out more units than the psp first off. Once it does that it will be successful imo
For sony only being in there 2nd generation of hand held's i think they are in a great place. Now that the vita / 3DS pricing is close to each other it is going to be a lot closer this generation i think...nintendo will still out sell vita tho.
In a way, yes. It's the same price as the 3DS and offers so much more. If Sony can't beat, or at least match, the 3DS, then Sony has dropped the ball big time. If Nintendo drops the price of the 3DS then I could see the Vita not beating it, but I doubt Nintendo will do that.

Ofcourse not. The Xbox 360 is still a success even if it didn't beat the Wii. Sony should have a chance at beating Nintendo this gen though. I think that they could make it happen, 3D isn't the kind of novelty that has made Nintendo successful in the past (two screens, motion controls, touch controls). Sony's going to win this handheld gen if they market their games, not just their handheld.
There are only really two things keeping me from buying a 3DS right now. The price being $250 when the Vita is the same price, yet so much better. That and the fact that Nintendo rarely wants to drop the price of their games (or hardware). I always wait for the games to drop in price before buying. With Nintendo, that means I have to wait a LONG time. With Sony, I don't have to wait no where near as long for a price drop. When the 3DS drops to about $150 and gets a redesign, I will get one. 4 years ago my house was broken into and my PS3, 10 PS3 games, 2 DS Lites, and 6 DS games were stolen. I had 8 total DS games at the time. That was 4 years ago and I have only bought 1 DS from then til now, which was GTA:CW. I have been waiting all this time on the price to their games to drop. It just happened a few weeks back and now I am considering finally buying some more DS games like Mario Kart because Nintendo FINALLY dropped the price on some of their games. If Nintendo takes the same route with the 3DS, then they can keep it and I will only get the Vita.
As for the TC question. The Vita doesn't have to sell more than the 3DS to be a success. The PSP was a huge success. It was Sony's first handheld and it sold over 70 million. That's damn good for their first haldheld ever competing against Nintendo. Last gen was the DS for me. This gen it is the Vita.
If Vita is classed as a failure for not outselling 3DS then N64, Gamecube, Xbox, 360 and PS3 are all failures since they haven't beat the highest selling console of there gen.

The DS outsold the PSP by a wide margin however the PSP sold in the ballpark of 70 million. Would you call 70 million sold a failure?
Having said that I believe neither will sell like hotcakes because of their overall price point. I'm sorry but even $250 ain't pocket change for a lot of gamers.
