If Sony owned Konami would Snake have been killed off years ago in favor of LGBTQ characters?

This question is fair game as Sony has a huge first party and we know they like to run their studios very progressively. Some of you may not be into politics and just want to game but the point is what Sony does will affect the games. Konami is just an example, I know Sony doesn't own them and I haven't heard any plans of Metal Gear making any major changes.

It's alright for Sony to go in this direction but then it's alright if we as gamers decide to love it, hate it or anywhere in between.

Imagine a new Metal Gear let's say they get Kojima back for it but just in order to kill off Snake and move the franchise forward with LGBTQ characters.

Would that be a welcome change for you or would you skip it simply because it's not the same game without Snake?

What's next, let's say Uncharted kills off Nathan Drake in favor of a more inclusive and woke cast of LGBTQ characters, would this be something you would be for or against?

I personally think the old franchises should remain with what made them great. I love better graphics, bigger more immersive worlds, better gameplay but don't make me play Metal Gear without Snake. If I want to play Tomb Raider, I will play Tomb Raider. That's just me, what say you?

If Naughty Dog made it yes it wouldn't surprise me. I don't think Sony actively pushes for this stuff though. They believe in complete creative freedom from their developers, so untill they produce a financial flop you probably won't see them step in.

Kind of a weird flex seeing as MGS has had LGBTQ characters as far back as MGS2 at least. MGS3, often considered the series fav, has a bi main antagonist.

Add to that, Kojima making in jokes about Solid Snake and Big Boss' sexual orientation in the games.

I personally don't have a problem with LGBTQ characters in games. The only problem I have is if the main character in one of my favorite games is killed off just to make some ambiguous political point that no one cares about.

If I play Metal Gear, I want to play as Snake. I don't want him killed off in favor of LGBTQ characters or any other characters. Even if he's killed off for a more macho character, I don't want that. I want to play Metal Gear to be Snake and if they kill him off then to me it stops being Metal Gear and I don't want to play it. If I play Tomb Raider, I want to play as Lara Croft. If she's killed off and now you can control a big buff macho guy instead then I don't want to play that either because it's not Tomb Raider to me.

So you don't like main characters being killed off and replaced by other characters. Fine. But you went the extra step, twice, and made it about playing as an LGBTQ character.

Like I get that MGS largely went off the rails after MGS3. Series consistency doesn't matter much. But the timeline really is covered at this point. Bringing back post MGS4 decrepit Solid Snake for another mission would be absurd.

Big Boss timeline is covered too. Like could maybe squeeze in what the real Big Boss was up to during the MGSV timeline, but even that's a stretch.

A reboot or remakes of the MSX titles is the only place they can go with any consistency for these characters.

Vamp was in MGS2 as well. He was gay as well, Fortune's dad and him... You know.

They could do a Boss prequel still.

@Xplode_games: Except you know if there's a ton of games with the same character the series starts to get a little stale dont you think? How many games can you play with the same characters until you get bored? Heck I love the Yakuza Series but it was starting to get a little stale playing with Kyru all the time, now there's new games in the series with new characters to play as.

Comic Books have been doing this for a while, with different races and genders playing the lead roles. As gaming become an older medium and evolves this is going to continue to happen, like it has for so many other forms of media

Could you have tried picking a better franchise to make your point? Solid Snake raises a kid together with Otacon, and then there is that mission in Peace Walker.

Who said otherwise? Look, the devs used their artistic freedom in their game. Nobody said all players need to like it. On the other hand, it sounds like you agree with me that the devs should not be silenced and should be allowed to make the game they want. If noone's sipping what they are serving, the market will take care of it and put them out of business. Much preferable to gamers trying to censor devs

I also find it funny that you don't want every game to have a female role despite the fact that absolutely majority of games made to this day are male. I would not be surprise if the ratio was 95% male versus other but its the end of the world with a slight shift in balance.

Well, considering this isn't even a company thing as much as it is a Naughty Dog one, and they didn't become a part of Sony until 2001, so unless this hypothetical allows for Naughty Dog studio heads to acquire all the Infinity Stones, travel back in time to usurp control of Sony, maybe with the aid of the Mother of Dragons, her dragons, and a Dothraki army (just for theatrics), and impose a regime of wokeness across the seven kingdoms as well as all the multiverses across space and time... well, I am just going to say no.

And that's the million dollar problem we face today under this political climate: why should it be a big deal? Why does diversity have to come down to social politics? Why can't diversity just be embraced? Actually diversity does get embraced warmly when it comes not with a serving of force-fed pandering politics.

There's a difference with embracing diversity and having a problem with the disingenuous nature of these big companies trying to push agenda for the sake of making money. These companies don't actually give a shit about your value for diversity as much as they care about virtue-signaling so they appear like the good guys so people support them with the $$$. Pandering companies take advantage of the times by virtue-signaling partisan ideals rather than truly caring about representation when games that actually handle representation well are largely left out of the conversation.

There is A LOT of space for diversity in video games, and in time I believe we'll see a great balance of it level in the playing field, but we gotta be able to distinguish the difference between the authenticity of representation and companies taking advantage of it to make a buck.

I don't see how TLOU 2 is an example of pandering. We've known Ellie was gay since 2013. Did we not expect her to have a relationship with another woman as an adult? And the only other person that would belong to the LGBTQ community is a child who wants to have a male gender role.And you don't even meet this person or discover this fact about them well into the story. Pandering in my opinion would be having every other character be gay or trans just for the sake of it. If that were the case then I'd agree with the criticism. It's being blown way out of proportion.

Additionally, the main thread of the story was about Joel getting murdered by Abby and crew. Had very little to do with Ellie being gay or Lev wanting to be a boy.

@Zero_epyon: I actually never had an issue with Ellie being gay. From what I see, I think most people have issues with the game's director and his questionable antics. People also have an issue with the story's direction.

What would be pandering is going down the list of iconic franchises, kill off the beloved main character just to replace them characters for the sake of diversity.

There is space for diverse characters in any franchise but to put them in for pushing agendas is a clear difference between genuine inclusion and disingenuous marketing ploys.

At the end of the day we live in a capitalist society that allows genuine endeavors as much as those who are in the system to make a quick buck. The latter will always exist even outside the current political environment.

That stuff is never going to stop, and people have the right of opinion when it comes down to seeing what comes from a genuine place versus mega corporations catching a trend.

We need diversity in games and I'd much rather see more individuals of diverse backgrounds to tell their authentic tales than just a woke company making an agenda-fueled marketing ploy.

Though you play as Joel in the first game, this story is not about Joel. It's about Ellie. Joel was merely a messenger who got attached to the package and made a selfish choice at the end. If people thought otherwise, they were mistaken and that's their fault.
