This might happen if Sony wants to avoid high production cost, like they did with the PS3 in the beginning.

I personally think it would be a shame if the PS4 came out without BC. :|

I'd get it, but I would just wait a while. BC is great justification for early adoption, but, after a year or so, becomes a feature I never use.

I highly doubt the PS4 will come with PS3 BC, because Sony will probably support the PS3 just like they did the PS2

They'll copy Nintendo's low budget approach and just make an upgraded PS3 IMO, so yeah there will be BC but I'd buy it after a price drop anyway.

Don't really care for BC too much honestly, but having PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 in one box is sex.

Sony only dropped PS2 B/Cbecause they were frantically try to chop the cost of manufacture for the PS3 and the emotion engine reputedly cost something like $30 (even the new PS2s are still B/C with the PS1). I will be surprised if the PS4 isn't B/C with its three predecessors, but if it isn't I'll just hold onto my PS3.

I would. I still own a PS2, and a PS3 with backwards compatibility that I still constantly use for both ps1 and ps2 games. just rebeat ICO recently, and going to attempt to beat digital devil saga 1 + 2, nocturne, and persona 3 fes/persona 4 sometime next year. definitely won't be able to beat all of them but I wanna see how far I can get :D

It will probably come with BC as I don't see Sony or MS or any other company moving into another technology anytime soon (red-ray etc). Shouldn't cost too much to incorporate it into the system.

No... they dropped it because they realized they could profit by reselling PS2 games on PSN. Do you think PCs cost more to play games from 2001? Sony was merely making up an excuse to justify it all. It's nothing more true than 4D & 120fps.

They dropped it because

1. It costs money to put the hardware in, which increases the cost of the PS3 which was already notoriously high.

2. It costs time and money to emulate the PS2.

3. Most people already have PS2s.

They're still trying to find ways to include it back in, which is why they patented that external box recently.

But PC microprocessors and graphics cards are designed to be backwards compatible; they share the same instruction sets and application programming interfaces as their predecessors.

The situation with the PS3 was very different. The PS3 shared little in common with the PS2 at all. Sony achieved hardware-based backwards compatability by including the PS2's Graphics Synthesizer and Emotion Engine. This did add to the total cost of production and served no role whatsoever for the machine other than just playing PS2 games.

Pretty much this. When the PS3 lost it's BC I was disappointed but after a while, I didn't care anymore. I hope the PS4 does come with BC though, then I'll be able to sell my PS3 but keep all my games.

Because they released an $800 system at $600 and proceeded to bleed an inordinate amount of money for several years.

Well, maybe if Sony didn't switch the entire architecture for the PS3 they could have. Hopefully in the future they will stick to a Cell-based Power architecture, and continue their relationship with NVidia.

Shouldn't need to support it anyway, everyone already has a PS2 just like everyone now has a PS3 so why bother spending the money to put in PS3 B/C when everyone has a PS3? It's kinda contradictary to the point of consoles. Plus Sony unlike MS will support the PS3 for a long time after the PS4 is released.

I really hope PS4 plays PS3 games it would really boost sales

Only reason Wii sold that much was because it was fully Backward Compatibility

I personally bought Wii just to play Gamecube games since Wii doesn't have many decent games

I don't guess I care about BC this time around since my PS3 isn't old and I'd likely keep it around anyway. I still keep my PS2 connected, too, so no worries. I don't think it would bother me.

The fact Ps3 lacked Ps2 backwards compatibility (at least the newer models) was a huge turn off for me for buying the system. I have so many PS2 games and my old PS2 was starting to kick the bucket, not to mention I wasn't into having to switch the cables every time just in order to play a damn game. I'd buy a PS4 for sure if it had backwards compatibility but if I have a 10+ ps3 game collection I would expect the PS4 to at least have some type of backwards compatibility.

Backward compatibility is important to me. I'm glad I got one of the last PS3 models with it. I see no reason why I should have to keep a PS2 next to my PS3 if I want to play last gen games. What's the point of keeping/collecting games if you can't play them? If the industryreally wants totake it to Gamestop and the used game business they should support backward compatibility. If the PS4 uses blu-ray just like the PS3 there's really no excuse not to include it.

Unless they keep using the Cell processor I don't see backwards compatibility happening. We've reached the point where proprietary console hardware is too sophisticated to be emulated using software.

I'd get it, but I would just wait a while. BC is great justification for early adoption, but, after a year or so, becomes a feature I never use.

Pug-Nasty

this, there has not been a ps2 game in my system since 2008. it would annoy me in the beginning though.
