Twilight princess to a 10 so people can stop blindly hating on it. i mean, since they seem to agree with the gs review.

foxhound_fox

I agree with a lot of what Gerstmann said about the game (which was a surprise, given I almost never agreed with him), and thought the evaluation was apt. I don't see how something so formulaic, and so generic (at least Majora's Mask and Wind Wake tried to shake things up) would ever deserve such high praise. It is a very well made game... but nothing about it is really original, or exceptional.

I found the design of the dungeons some of the best in the entire series. It had a unique, dark art design that was still different than majora, and had very interesting characters. The game was a 50 - 70 hour game if you took your time with it and did everything there was to do. In particular, the water temple, forest temple, the desert prison temple, and skytown as a whole struck me as brilliant. I feel the whole game is 200 pounds of polish on the formula, with unique location, art, and almost as dark as MM whilst still being different. It is horribly underated on this site and forum. The best review I've seen is the gametrailers one.

I did absolutely everything (except find every heart piece), twice... and it only took me around 40 hours each time. Unless you are just wandering around endlessly for hours at a time, the game isn't much longer than 40 hours for the first time through. Not to mention the speed run is done in less than 4 hours.

It is rated about right here. Its given so much praise elsewhere I think solely because its a Zelda title. Overall, the game is very well-made, and is well-polished... but it is a "jack of all trades, master of none" when it comes to content, and I think this warrants it be marked down, because all the previous 3D Zelda's before it focused on particular aspects of gameplay, and did them exceptionally well. Twilight Princess tried to do too much, and suffers because of it. Not to mention it introduced nothing that could be considered "revolutionary" or "innovative." It just built on old ideas, and tried to do too much all at once.

Had it been more focused a game, and didn't have the superfluous waggle tacked on for no reason (I thought it detracted from the experience, because it was so gimmicky) I think it would have done a lot better here, and be much more popular with the average forum goer. The only reason I don't think it deserves a 10 (I enjoyed it more than any other 3D Zelda so far, and beat it twice, while never beating any other 3D one, yet) is because there was so much potential for it to be a much better, and more focused game. The whole Twilight Realm itself was extremely under-realized, and could have added SO much more to the game had they spent the time focusing on it.

well yeah if you rush through it it's going to take 40 hours. The Witcher Enhanced Edition, from 8.5 to 9.5

Reason: The EE was free to all owners of the original, and it fixed what was wrong with the first, yet GS gave no numerical credit at all to the extensive reprogramming.

  • Wild Arms: Alter Code F - 7.2 to 9.8, docked only a few tenths of a point due to technical problems
  • Wild Arms 3 - 7.5 to 10
  • Dragon Quest 8 - 9.0 to 10
  • Rogue Galaxy - 8.0 to 9.0, fun but does have a lot boring corridor moments throughout and and a little more boring it had to be at times, but overall fun

I would give Lost Winds an 8. I feel the game was well made and docked marksfor unfair reasons. Its biggest problem is its short.

Eh... we both have our opinions about the game, so I don't really think this needs discussing anymore. Sure, you can "take your time" but when it comes down to it, the average player isn't going to take much longer than 40-45 hours the first time through and the waggle was added solely because it was a Wii game and it needed to showcase the new input method (I was expecting 1:1, so maybe that's why I was so disappointed when all I got was a more complicated and silly version of pushing a button; I don't doubt Skyward Sword is going to be exactly what TP should have been).

"Senseless hate"? Do you even consider that someone might have a different opinion than you? I liked the game, and thought it was very well-made, I just have higher standards from Nintendo and especially Zelda games. I expect greatness from these games, not just fulfilling the status quo. TP was supposed to be another "Ocarina of Time" in terms of pushing the series and genre forward... and all it did was stagnate it and remake Ocarina with a few useless additions.

There is revolutionary innovation, and then there is polished innovation. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is of the latter kind of innovation. They've taken everything from all the previous games that has worked, combined it all into one game, and polished it into a stellar diamond of 2D platformers. They've moved the genre forward in terms of polish, not revolution. Donkey Kong Country Returns is an example of the former, where tons of new ideas and concepts are being practiced in the game, to amazing effect. The only reason it isn't a buggy mess like a lot of games of revolutionary innovation, is because its made by Retro, a developer who knows the importance of polish as well as pushing things forwards.

You can complain as much as you want about my opinion, but it is the furthest thing from "not well founded" as one can get. I have played the game through twice, and have experience playing almost every other major game in the series and many action-adventures. I know what to expect from both a well-made and innovative action-adventure, as well as a Zelda, and think that Twilight Princess, despite being enjoyable and well-made, isn't a shining example of how the series should be approached.

How can Nintendo put so much effort into perfecting the gameplay and design in games like NSMB Wii and SMG2, and then seem to put so little effort into making Twilight Princess (the second of their two major flagship titles) a focused and tight experience? TP is all over the place in terms of design, styIe and pacing... and leads me to believe that instead of scraping their work halfway through development when the plans for the Wii and motion controls were released and build a game designed for them from scratch, they just tried to integrate all the work they did with some new, gimmicky ideas.

TP is good. It just isn't as great as the rest of the 3D Zelda's. All three of them were solid, highly-focused games that did what they intended. TP felt like a game that didn't know what it wanted to do, and didn't end up doing anything extremely well (like Nintendo games have always been).

Call me a hater all you like, but I am so critical of Nintendo games because I hold them to a much higher standard than other developers. They have brilliant minds in their company, and to craft something any less than excellent is a slight against me as a fan. TP goes contrary to the design mantra I've seen from almost every major game Nintendo has ever released. Instead of focusing on doing a few things right, they try to do everything all at once. And that is why I don't think TP is deserving of top praise.

I agree to disagree then. I myself thought it was brilliant. Maybe not WW or MM brilliant, but close. It's a 10/10 for me. I may have come across a bit strongly on the hate part, but I disagree very strongly :P

Well, as for a real answer, I believe MGS4 should be knocked down to an 8.5. Mainly because I love the series so much. It seems misleading for MGS4 to have the highest rating of the series when it is arguably the weakest link.

sandbox3d

If anything...MGS3 was more deserving of that 10.

Absolutely. MGS2 and MGS3 are two of my all time favorite games. MGS4 is just....ugh, I don't even want to get into it. I literally couldn't believe what I was playing when I got that game.

Hell no. MGS4 is my favorite in the series. MGS3 was amazing but it suffered from some not so great mechanics (the food and such was a tad lame) and most importantly Volgan was the lamest MGS character to date. I would say MGS4 > MGS3 = MGS1 > MGS2.

ANYWAY, I would say Baten Kaitos Origins should be a 9 or higher, not a 7.5

Exactly!

I'm not like a lot of people who say the game is garbage, it definitely deserved a AAA score. But when you compare it to previous GTA games, as far as things to do, it seems lacking.

It does a great job improving Gunplay, however compared to other games (like Uncharted or Gears of War) the gunplay is pretty weak, Red Dead Redemption improved on the Gunplay so much though when compared to GTA IV.

Also, the online multiplayer is crazy fun with a few friends, however it wasn't handled well. The matchmaking feels sloppy and you have to sit in a Lobby waiting for the party leader to change game settings most of the time. I've spent a lot of time waiting in a lobby to watch player leave while waiting for the leader to start the game.

But the story was handled a lot better, I just wanna see more of the Over the Top Fun, and random moments like from past GTA games...I don't care if it's not realistic to steal a jet from a naval ship...I wanna do it! :D

I'd raise Metro 2033's 8 on the PC to a solid 9.0, or would lower GTAIV's 10 to a 9.0.

Majora's Mask should have been a 10/10. It is the best 3D zelda game.

So,you can change the score of one game on Gamespot. What game would that be?

You can also name more if you want.
Shadow of Rome,8.2 to a 9.0.

Off-topic:I want Team Buddies on XBL or PSN.

all three Halo games on 360, starting in order:

halo3 - 7.5

odst -7.0

reach - 8.0

okay, the ODST deserves that, halo 3 should maybe be 8,5, and honestly giving Reach an 8 is just cruel...what is a reasonable justification for Reach to be deducted so much...just because you dont prefer the game's formula doesnt mean it isnt a high quality blockbuster......even halo haters had to admit it was the best halo since combat evolved, and most people can agree combat evolved is a classic...stop the random, unjustified hate!

Any of the 8.5/10 Wii games, to 8.0 or 9.0, doesn't even matter, just stop 8.5ing everything, it's not fun anymore!

Just one. I'd switch the scored for Ratchet and Clank ACiT and ToD. I'd also give both Gears games a 6.5.

However, in the spirit of giving scores rather than taking them, lets give ToD that 8.5

Halo ODST to about a 7.5. Even though I would give it lower personally, I think that's realistic enough.
