Why? What is it that Halo gave you that other FPS before it couldn't? I want to know what Halo brought to the table that made you think it's the best game ever?shungokustasu
I was talking to someone about that yesterday as well and I asked the same question, and he didn't know the answer.
Halo isn't the best game ever, not by a long way.
But it's got the best 4-player split screen on a console, multiplayer is great too. That's why I like it.

okay thanx for the post, but I'm looking for people who actually think it is. I know there are plenty of them on here.Â
Does it every get tiring making the same old Halo bashing threads?musicalmac
Show me where I bash Halo and I will delete the thread.Â

O.o I haven't beat Halo 2 yet so I guess I'm a bit different than everyone.Â
It's the best console FPS. I don't think it's the best game ever. Motorstorm is the greatest game ever created by man/god.DaysAirlines

Nail. Head. Right here.
Â
But if you've been playing FPS games on the PC since the 90s, Halo is just another console shooter when compared to what you can do on the PC.Â

People don't like to accept that it's a good game. That's fair enough though, it shouldn't stop people enjoying it.
I accept that it's a good game. This coming from a person who hates FPS. However, I know people love FPS, but I ask why some feel that Halo is the best game ever. And yes many people have stated this in System Wars.Â

I don't know if it is the best FPS ever. However It gave me the most fun I ever had with a FPS since golden eye. I really think it is the gameplay. I like the stickie grenades, the beat downs, and just the plain fun you can have with friends doing stupid stuff. Lan parties is where it is at though. I had the most fun with halo at college.
I'm just now getting into Halo for the first time via my 360. FPS are not my thing but I decided to give it a shot especially with Part 3 coming out later this year.
Its fun to play. Real fun. The best game is the one that doesn't have you thinking about whats wrong with the game but instead your just having a blast with it. Thats what I am getting out of Halo.
Nothing more, nothing less.

You're obviously trying to find someone who loves it more then any other game just so you can prove them wrong and make them look dumb.
Personally Halo is my fav FPS of all time although Half-Life2 is real close behind it but it my opinion.
Â
Good hero, great enemies, solid gameplay, (multiplayer), best co-op, teh epicness. The complete mix of all that make it a great game. Not the best ever though, nothing can truly be called best ever because after best ever there would be no need to keep on producing videogames.Jelle87
Nice answer. One who truly understand how to answer a question.Â

If you have hate FPS's why ask about what makes it the best for people if you hate them?Â
I never got into Halo, i think most of that was down to being into PC FPS. I've never understood the hype around it, but i totally understand why people like it and respect their opinions. Even i am getting a little excited with all this Halo 3 hype :Ptonythestudent
Hey, I felt the exact same was as you until I actually played the game.
I played PC FPSs for a long, long time, and completely disregarded Halo as a n00b shooter as a result. That was, until I actually sat down and started playing it with a few friends. It's so easy to get into, there are so many play options and the controls are so good I couldn't resist it. Even if the single player was crap.Â

Halo 2 yes. Halo:CE no way. Halo3 will be miles better than both.
You can make the same argument for any game. Why does it matter so much to you? Let people like what they like.sonicare

Some people get touchy when they finally have to bring up facts.
In my opinion (since best is opinion) Halo and Halo 2 are the best two games I have played.
Reasons: Only games I have consistently years after their releases and enjoyed doing so.Â

Yeah, i started to play a little Halo 2 multi on my housemates Xbox and enjoyed it, but i still found myself going back to PC FPS.  Maybe Halo 3 might be the turning point, although with UT coming out it's gunna have a hard time :P  Â
I think Timesplitters 2 has a better split screen multiplayer. better levels, more weapon variation, and just all out more fun.Halo isn't the best game ever, not by a long way.

Oh? please explain?
In 99% of FPS games, you move through a level with a set number of enemies, who you shoot down. They're usually faceless goons who you couldn't care less about. In Halo, rather than just having to kill all the bad guys, you're always in combat for a logical reason. They're invading your ship for example, or you're both struggling to find the map room on the silent cartographer level.
There's a motive. And you're against a hierarchy. An actual army, rather than random goons or generic alien monsters. They have Elites, they have grunts, they have jackals and hunters. The elites will yell orders at the grunts, if you kill all of the elites, the grunts start screaming and running away. It's a real battle situation. The enemy attempt to flank you, will pick up better weapons, charge at you if things aren't going so well, hurl grenades. You dont just shoot them all down, you have to FIGHT with them.Â

Okay, so Halo has great replay value. Understood. Are replay values of classic FPS not up to par with Halo?

I grew up playing R6 and Counter Strike. Many great games on PC. Halo is the best console FPS by a mile. And I must say, even though the PC beats it in graphics, Halo is just fun. There is a need for both in this world, good PC and good console. I need both.
The only FPS I played before halo was WOLF3D, I wasn't really into any FPS game or any first person game. I guess halo just allowed people who were not into the FPS genre to get into it. The problem I had with previous FPS were that they were usually too complicated or restricted. For example they sometimes involved going to some random place to find a card or a key, you would often spend about half an hour searching through the same places until you found the object by chance or got bored and just left the game. Other FPS games gave you limited ammo which you really had to ration, if you ran out then you would have to resort to weak punches or a knife, which were not strong enough to use. Another factor is health, you have to ration that too, say you just got through a firefight but you only have 5% of your health left you would restart from your savepoint and re-do the fight even though you came out a winner.
Halo is very action based. There are few puzzles, no annoying health limits and there is always enough ammo to get though the game. That is what put it on the board, it stayed focused on the fun part, the fighting.

That's mostly opinion. Though I suspect only the likes of Unreal Tournament and Counter Strike have maintained a consistantly large online player base for a longer period of time.

That sounds very cool. I never actually played the story of Halo just the MP. The mechanics of FPS or TPS is the reason I don't like them, but that what you explain sounds very, very interesting.
Civilization IV is the greatest game ever. You're not going to find another AAA title with so much replay value. Maybe WoW, but ugh. It's World of Warcraft.

Over 12,000 players still on Live Halo 2 say no.Â
My reason is the the matchmaking and party system. It is vey easy to get into a good game with this. Your freinds can be invited into your game and stay there no-matter what. The party leader can move the whole party into someone elses party. The matchmaking system is the best way to find a game period.
And whats even better. In halo 3 there will be custom game server lists.
