I've always maintained Sony makes the best home consoles- they just 'get' home consoles, like Nintendo 'gets' handhelds. Anyway, the PS3, disaster that it was at the beginning of this generation, has seen a remarkable turnaround, and has become the most viable system this generation. If you are just buying a console now, there is no reason to not get a PS3. There is no reason to not buy a PS3 period- it's the best home console on the market. I'll be honest, it's not best at anything it does- it's bested in online, the controller, and multiplats by Xbox, it's bested in first party and exclusives by Wii- but it's consistently second place in everything, and that makes it the most rounded and best console overall to own.
- Free online with PSN. PSN is not as good as XBL still, not by a long shot; however, it's a great community, gets the job done, and is free.
- Complete multiplat support unlike the Wii. Although most multiplats are still marginally better on Xbox, the difference is negligible enough that the trade off doesn't matter.
- Extensive first party support. Sony's first party is vast enough to have something for everyone. Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance, God of War, inFamous, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, LittleBigPlanet, ModNation Racers, Warhawk, Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo, there's got to be something there that appeals to you.
- Exclusive third party support. Add to that the fact that most quality third party Japanese support for consoles goes to the PS3, and you've got yourself some great games you wouldn't have access to otherwise. Yes, the Wii's first party is better, but PS3's is great too, and support from third parties, as well as Sony's support for new IPs puts it on an even footing.
- The smaller things: The fact that you don't need to pay $60 bucks a year just to use Facebook, Twitter, or your own Netflix that you're already paying for. The fact that it runs Blu Ray moviess. The fact that PSN+ provides some great loyalty program deals. The fact that you never have to change a disc while playing PS3. The smaller things all contribute to a better PS3 experience.
So yes, the Xbox bests the PS3 in some areas; the Wii bests it in some other areas; but only the PS3 performs consistently well in ALL areas. If you're buying a home console now, from this generation, there is no reason to not get a PS3. With a vast, entrenched library, in addition to some great upcoming exclusive support, you can't go wrong with the system anymore at all.

Once the PS3 drops in price again, and the PS4 has no backward compat and cost $400 a pop, I'll definately get a PS3 and catch up on all the games that I've missed.
