The next Xbox will ship to retailers in late October or early November of next year with six times the processing power of the Xbox 360, sources close to the project have told IGN.

Following initial reports from tech blogs Fudzilla and SemiAccurate, our sources have confirmed that mass production of the system's GPU will indeed begin by the end of 2012 but will not, however, be based on AMD's 7000 series Southern Islands GPU. Instead, the processor will be derived from the 6000 series, which was introduced last year. More specifically, it will be akin to the Radeon HD 6670, which offers support for DirectX11, multidisplay output, 3D and 1080p HD output. The chip currently has a market price of upwards of $79.99.

In real terms, the Xbox 720's raw graphics processing power is expected to be six times that of the Xbox 360 and will yield 20-percent greater performance than Nintendo's forthcoming console, the Wii U.

Source.

That's it? I expect more. 20% will not be very much difference visually.

Hmmm.. if that ends up being true, the Wii-U itself will end up being something between the current gen and next gen... a good or a bad thing?Desmonic
Then who's the next gen? Ps4 alone?

Thought a 7000 series GPU sounded too good to be true, without costing an arm and a leg at least.

So how powerful will the Wii-U be, then?

Honestly, I'm not that impressed. 6 times the processing power of the 360 doesn't seem like a huge jump.

It would be terrible. That means that every console would need to have some sort of tablet controller.

That reason is also the reason why no game will use the WiiU as the lead platform.

I wouldn't say that.

Xbox was about 3 times more powerful than the PS2.

20% difference is pretty slim.

This rumor is bogus.

thanks to the success of Wii I was expecting MS and probably even Sony to take similar path for next gen and go with outdated hardware.

The 720. I think he is saying the Wii U is stronger then PS3/360, but not the 720. (Possibly PS4, nothing was announced yet.)

So its coming out a year later and is only going to be 20% more powerful? Well it could be worse. It could be like PS3 come out a year later and run games 20% worse

So 6 times more powerful than current gen, but only 20% more powerful than Wii-U?

I was fully expecting Wii-U to barely be on par with the 360.

That reason is also the reason why no game will use the WiiU as the lead platform.

If a dev is lazy, he can port a multiplatform game on Wii U with just putting an inventory or menu system on the tablet controller and that's it. Similarly, if Wii U is the lead platform, devs will just scrap the controls and mechanics involving the screen of the tablet controller and it would be easy to port it to other platforms unless the screen of the tablet controller is of vital importance for the gameplay. We'll have to see more of the Wii U at this E3 before making a conclusion.

I think what we can take from all of this is that

the Wii U will be roughly 5x more powerful than the 360. take that haters! :P

This rumor is bogus.

But even 20% is enough to consider the Next Xbox more powerful right? So that would be enough for it to become "next-gen" ( assuming the next playstation would be similar to it, like this gen) and leave the Wii-U as something in between the previous gen and the next gen, like the original Wii.

That makes no sense. 20% is nothing.

IGN that has no idea about 720 or Wii hardware, is commenting on a random percent that they have no idea if it is correct, based on rumored specs for borh systems that may be 100% different than the actual hardware

That doesn't sound like much....weren't people saying it would be 3x as powerful? If true, I think that's good news.

Anyway, looks like my 6870 should serve me for quite a while longer if they're basing the GPU on the 6670.

That's great. 7 years and a console that matches a low end card from PC today. A tablet will have more power by the time this joke launches.

well thats it then...game over for ninty. 20%...clearly devs wont be able to support the wiiu and 720. the power gap is just too big...the game would need a complete rewrite just as porting a 360 game to the wii needs a rewrite. if the PS4 is a whole 25% more powerful than the wiiu then game over ninty. :P j/k. seriously if its only 20% then ninty certainly wont have a power problem with regard to third party support. if third parties drop the wiiu then itll be for other reasons (that has also happened before..GC was dropped like a stone yet was very competative power wise. so this doesnt mean ninty should be complacent).

Just 20%, eh? If true, then the Wii U probably has some good hardware under the hood. That's not a very big difference.

Translated from IGN to English: sources familiar with reality think next Xbox won't be a huge leap forward, IGN makes up numbers so they can get some pageviews out of it.

Indeed, noone actually know anything about WiiU or 720 yet, in the slightest

It is all based on rumors and comparissons to PC hardware, when consoles are not really PC parts anyway

People need to read the OP... As per IGN: Wii U: ~x5 360's power. NextBox: ~x6 360's power, 1.2 Wii U's.

Anyone who truly believed that next gen was going to be exactly like this gen (big power jump from Sony and MS while Nintendo remained the weaker) were delusional.
