If releasing the most faulty hardware in recent gaming history and pulling the wool over the consumers eyes with a waranty extension and new chipsets is doing very well...I guess your right.Jynxzor
That's just the thing. Even with the RROD, they've managed to do very well.
I suppose it depends on your definition of "surpassing." Sony has done more for gaming than Microsoft has ever done, so i'm gonna go ahead and say no on this one.
Sony obliterated the competition for 2 generations. While Microsoft has yet to see what first place is like ON top of that while this is most certainly a humbling generation for Sony they have clearly shown a superior 1st/2nd party to Microsot and one that might not even rival nintendo at this point. I would argue they've made a strong enough case to say they are stronger in terms of Depth(as in more studios for Sony that put on a stronger console show). Sony still has a very strong legacy in gaming, and for all intents and purposes they have chipped away at the lead Microsoft has had for awhile. Microsoft was at a point where they had just gotten so much better than the previous generation. Just right now it feels like they are stuck in neutral. Hopefully Natal is what they actually need. jg4xchamp
Um what? We are allways hearing how sales don't matter to the 2cepts well 64, Gamecube and Xbox were all superior to ps1 & ps2 hardware no question.
The original Xbox worked well enough, but lost money hand-over-fist—a consequence of being put together in a hurry, using what were essentially commodity PC parts. The Xbox 360 has started making money after several years of substantial losses (exacerbated by chronic unreliability issues), but even this modest success is arguably as much to do with Sony's dubious managerial decisions as it is to any particular quality of the Xbox 360. Hoping for your competitor to fail isn't a business model.Pretty much sums it up.And all this money has only gotten Microsoft to second place in the market; both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 lag far behind Nintendo's Wii. Even that second place is not assured; Microsoft beat Sony to market by some months, and attained a sizable sales lead, but Sony is slowly beginning to fight back and diminish that advantage.Peter Bright for Ars Technica

Um I don't think once in my post that Sony makes better hardware :| I was talking the legacy of sales and games. Sony has owned the gaming market for 2 gens at one point. Sure they fell off this year, but it isn't like Microsoft took that crown from them Nintendo did for all intents and purposes. Even with the sales differential, the games are speaking for themselves. The PS3/Sony have completely outperformed the 360 in quality exclusives/games(and I'll put money on overall library) from 2008-first half of 2010. Again you find one thing in my post that has anything to do with horsepower. Please I'm waiting :|Microsoft is beating Sony in hardware units sold, total exclusives, total library and most importantly, PROFIT.

the 360 did whatit had to do this year with help from nintendo taking sony's reign at 1st place. I see it as a cooperative effort without getting recognition. everything is going according to plan for MS but they really shoting theirself in the foot with NATAL
Nintendo didn't need any help to take the top spot. It has the cheapest most accessible, least intimidating console, which has sold more than both the HD consoles combined.the 360 did whatit had to do this year with help from nintendo taking sony's reign at 1st place. Nope, although they have done mostly better than Sony this gen. they have a long way to go before they can surpass Sony. In nine years Sony has sold ~160 million PlayStation systems(I'm not including the PSP for obvious reasons) while MS has sold ~70 million Xbox systems, you can go ahead and take off "hardware units sold" from the "MS successes over Sony list". In total exclusives, Sony wins out again with the large list of PS2 1st, 2nd and 3rd party exclusives and the PS3's 1st and 2nd party exclusives. Total library, Sony again due to the PS2. Finally Profit, MS didn't make a profit on the Xbox brand until around 2008 while Sony had been profiting on the PlayStation brand until late 2006 so it's more or less a draw on this issue. MS has been doing very well this gen but they still have a ways to go to surpass Sony in general.Microsoft is beating Sony in hardware units sold, total exclusives, total library and most importantly, PROFIT.

They finally achieve their PS2 mantra.

oh the old "Playstation family" leverage.
NO!!!!!!!!!!! i am not a fanboy but ps2 owned xbox...and xbox had the advantage so the first 2 years of ps3...it was loosing....but COME ON ps3 is OWNING right now it's doing way better for games and the slim is a masterpiece built near perfection and i enjoy my ps3 WAY better then my 360....that's why i sold it :)

Surpassed? naa, but it reached the same level as Sony, which is really impressive by all standards, MS wanted to become a household name, and they got it.
Surpassing sony has not been done however, Sony had a good year last yer, while MS was losing alittle steam.
If MS will end up surpassing Sony in gaming? well I guess part of that question will be answered at e3, and the obvious notion that MS will likely be ready with thier next console way before Sony ends up getting ready for a new one. If MS ends up getting a year headstart on Sony again, then They may very likely end up surpassing them.

Yeah cos games cease to exist after a year
360 slaughtered PS3 for years and now PS3 finally gets a year back
"O those other years never counted anyway!!!!" PS fanboys...
MS is surely getting better but i dont think it surpassed Sony...
since TC mentioned 9 yrs since MS got in the console gaming division then we have to see what both MS & Sony did in the past 9 years..
Wanna talk sales? see what both sold in total in the past 9 yrs
Wanna talk games? see what both had to offer 1st party / exclusives in the past 9yrs
Wanna talk profit? erm we should see how much both lost in the past 9yrs :)
Also seeing both user install base its not like 360 has 30 million more consoles sold compared to PS3, they are actually quite close.. and surely many of those systems sold are due to faulty hardward.. (Personally over here MS doesnt cover the 3 yr warranty so when my 360 died last year, i had to buy a new one for Eur100, giving them back the old one)... so i bought 2 x 360's & so far 1 x PS3 since its working fine :)
I agree with the PS3 having a better library. Lems just like to hide behind old ass games like Ghost Recon, Gears 1, Mass Effect 1. Perfect Dark Zero, and try claim 360 has the better library. PS3 is owning the 360 big time in exclusives since the start of 09. In both quality and quantity.[QUOTE="Grawse"]

Total exclusives? PS3 has a much greater and more variable list of exclusives.
Total library? I would say PS3 is ahead, even though their libraries are rather similar.
Profit? Just count all the loss MS has got from RROD.locopatho

I don't care that those games are old. I just find it funny how Lems have been so starved for good exclusives since the start of 2009 that they have to bring up games 3-4 years old.Profit wise MS is selling there games 2-1 some games 3-1comepared to the ps3 since theres more gamers on the 360 and most the people i know only have a ps3 for a blueray player and sony is gonna start charging for the online with the platinum PSN is coming out later this year since there still losing money on eadch system they sell the slim they lost $17 a console while with the fat ps3 they lost $40 and remember when the system first launched in 2006 they lost $240 per system soldwhile microsoft been making a avg profit $71 per system sold and reports till date Sonys gaming industry has lost over 3Billlion untill they can gain a profit sony will be keeping the ps3 for 20years+

Well, Microsoft is beating Sony in all these things so not sure what's so funny. Sony wishes they were in either Microsoft or Nintendos position.
But MS doesn't add the cost for the repairs of faulty hardware, they had to fork over a billion not to long ago and I hear that has all been used up. You can't really say either surpassed the other this generation since both systems made huge mistakes. Shame on Sony for making a system that expensive at launch, with their experience they should have known better.Profit wise MS is selling there games 2-1 some games 3-1comepared to the ps3 since theres more gamers on the 360 and most the people i know only have a ps3 for a blueray player and sony is gonna start charging for the online with the platinum PSN is coming out later this year since there still losing money on eadch system they sell the slim they lost $17 a console while with the fat ps3 they lost $40 and remember when the system first launched in 2006 they lost $240 per system soldwhile microsoft been making a avg profit $71 per system sold and reports till date Sonys gaming industry has lost over 3Billlion untill they can gain a profit sony will be keeping the ps3 for 20years+

financially .... i agree .... but games and hardware wise .... Sony would have gone out of business already.MS has come a long way and Sony has lost allot of ground so um yeah, the playing field should be fairly level heading into next gen and I can't wait. :P

LOL they are in MS's position. The 360 should have more hardware units sold. Way more! It's been out a year longer, it's cheaper than the PS3 and it's hardware is faulty which caused some people to buy another system and it still only manages to stay ahead by 5 million units.[QUOTE="Jynxzor"]If releasing the most faulty hardware in recent gaming history and pulling the wool over the consumers eyes with a waranty extension and new chipsets is doing very well...I guess your right.bphan
That's just the thing. Even with the RROD, they've managed to do very well.
So you think RROD is a good thing?...Business wise yes, gaming wise NO. MS is more profitable because they milk gamers more than Sony does. MS charges $90 for wifi, $35 - $50 a year for live, $120 for a HD if you bought an arcade unit, $12 for rechargeable batteries, $50 for a controller with out rechargeable batteries in it and nickel and dimes you for things that should be free when you buy games like clothes for your avatar. Sony on the other hand gives you free PSN, includes rechargeable battery in controller, all PS3's have wifi and does not force you to buy proprietary HD's. Also Sony's 1st party is constantly producing quality titles hitting homeruns while MS's 1st party hits a few homeruns between a bunch of strikeouts or base hits.
that made no sense, if you have to compare the last 9 years, you have to put the sales of the ps2 psp and ps3 vs the sales of xbox and xbox 360. as you said M$ vs sony in gaming. we are talking microsoft 70 millions ish vs sony's 200+ millions ish
