in 2001 FFX, MGS2, GTA3, and GT 3 all came out and paved the way for ps2's dominance

now look at 2008 for ps3 MGS4, and GTA4 are 2008 for sure maybe FF13 as well (doubtful) but we also got some new stuff in the mix like killzone 2 which could very well be better than halo 3......

point is for all you peeps saying ps3 has failed , the original ps2 started off bad, and in 2001 cause of 4 key releases it blew up in sales....

2008 IMO will be for ps3 what 2001 was for ps2

Didn't GC and Xbox release a year later than the PS2? So the PS2 had the advantage of being a year out early and the sales were phenomenal from the start. So the spike in sales that those games provided helped the system a lot, but the PS2 was already selling massively from the beginning. So there's the difference. The PS3 doesn't have that year advantage and it isn't selling consistently from the beginning like the PS2. Those games will help the PS3, but if sales remain this low, there's no way it'll be able to catch up. Sales winners sell consistently.

Please do no forget that DEil May cry was also one of the games in 2001 that gave the PS2 its success.

What leads you to believe it couldn't be?

Instead of looking to the first game to define the second, how about we actually pay attention to the game itself. The first Killzone is not Killzone 2. From the copius amount of evidence we've seen, it seeks to add more than what Halo has actually bothered with. Even Haze beats Halo at this point by offering grapples and nectar as well as Halo's generic gameplay.

Basically the fact that killzone is not a very top notch brand ala halo? the fact that Gurillea has never been a top pedigree developer? the fact that halo has always been one of the best games on the market, while killzone has been sub-par at best? Probably those facts.

As for your second paragraphs, you obviously dont know very much about halo 3 or what its doing different. tell me, what has Killzone 2 added that halo hasnt bothered with? teh cover system? lmao.

So you're entire conviction for saying Halo's gonna beat out Killzone is based on Bungie's repetition and all around unwillingness to innovate gameplay and atmosphere?

Guerilla has always been a solid developer--Or "top pedigree" if you wish. The only problem they've had with their past games is lack of resources; if Bungie weren't backed my Microsoft, they could've very well fallen victim to the same problems they encountered. Please do not try to identify a developer's value when you obviously don't know what to look for.

Yes, actually....

Halo never had this option and, from the looks of it, it still won't because, as I said, Bungie is repetitious and scared of branching out from the more generic FPS aspects since they don't want to threaten the status of their loyalist fanbase.

No...my conviction is that halo has always been a good game, killzone has been a bad one. easy enough to understand.

based on what? What have they made to prove that they have always been a top pedigree developer? Bungie has marathon and halo, what does guerilla have? killzone was dismal. And why should i care about their circumstances? The games they have made have been bad, thats a cold hard fact.

Yes, actually....

If the cover system is what you are touting so highly about killzone 2 then all i can do is laugh. Seriosuly? the cover system? It doesnt even look that good. i mean really, thats it? thats all? the cover system is what is going to push killzone over halo? give me a break... :|

Well i guess so, i wouldn't say it was the main reason but it gave the PS2 a big boost in defending top stop against the competitors.

They were responsible for part of its' success, but not all of it. Most of the sales came from both the year head-start and overall long life-cycle -- the PS2 will last over ten years, just like the PS1 before it. This gen, although the PS3 has lost the advantage of a head-start, it will still have its' ten year plan and Blu-ray to ensure success. It's how it's always been, really. Sony are essentially in their own league.

Like it or not, Kingdom Hearts should be considered one of them.

People were more than excited to see Disney character next to Final Fantasy characters while having hollywood star line up of voice acting and awesome graphics.

Final Fantasy X is in there obviously like usual

Then it's probably MGS2 and GTA III

However, PS2 strength was never about a single game. It was huge number of solid titles like Xenosaga, Shadow Hearts, etc that attracted many dedicated fans in small groups. Add them together you get one huge group of dedicated fans depending on PS2 to play their cult classic type of games.

PS1 on the other hand, their success was completely based on Final Fantasy VII period. After Final Fantasy VII, the system finally shook off Saturn and from there on 3rd party support started flocking in.

So what is the PS2 then? The PS3, getting its balls handed to it by the competition, the X360 which has dropped like a stone in Japan, or the Wii which is selling out everywhere to absurd amounts of demand with almost no games?

None of them are the same, but the Wii is certainly the closest.

A lot of people are bringing up arguments against killzone 2, so let me settle them. KZ2 will not top the amount sold by halo 3, which is the important part. We can argue about the quality of the games in a nother thread. Also, gta is avaliable on another console this time around and to further bury the ps3, this 'other console' has a larger intalled userbase than the ps3. So, until mgs4 comes out, ps3 is in a bad spot. And! If Konami did pull a dirty trick and port mgs4 (BIG IF) we would have to wait for final fantasy to see any hope of ps3 taking a lead.

The PS2 had both, hence the divide. The X360 doesn't have a chance because it will never have the sales. The Wii? Well, it can always get more games.

Thats a serious stretch.

I'll bite, it is possible. But whats more probable is the Wii being bombarded by freshly converted developers after very promising sales.

unless of course most of those games get delayed just like what happened this year(i mean really who could have predicted a MGS4 delay last August? does no one remember how the cows were hyping MGS4 as *THE* 2007 title? it could happen again so lets stop hyping games as *the* titles to get because the exact same thing could happen.)

Okay. Professional writers perhaps?

Enjoying gameply may be subjective, but observing it is not. Halo's gameply hasn't changed. I don't need to be a "professional reviewer" to see that.

GTA4 coming to 360

People would rather play Halo 3 than Killzone 2

FF13 and MGS4 are nice though and are the only games coming for PS3 capable of being system sellers. Unless Killzone turns out to be the best thing since sliced bread. I'll wait and see...

Anything flopping is a possibility, but you're wildly overstating things. A lot of people could say, and have said, Halo's artistic style is "meh," but that kind of statement bares too much subjectivity. And now you're emphasizing the first game when the one on trial is the second one--A stupid knee-jerk, especially in the face of Liberation.

Finally, we've been given a very good description and demonstration of the gameplay by the devs. We know more about Killzone this early in its development than we knew about Gears of War--And yet no one was shooting down preditions of AA scores for that game.

why do people use an earlier release as an excuse for success..

The dreamcast came out 16 months before the ps2 and almost 3 years before the GC and Xbox. It did fail, but at the time of it's release it had record breaking sales and did very well until the ps2 came out. The downfall of the dreamcast was the dvd player in the ps2. Also the fact that Sega did'nt have the resources to keep up. Hence why i can't stand people bashing blu-ray cause they are only 16 and have only bought dvds

You're hyping it to be better than halo :| ...

I'm asserting it to be a break-away from Halo's mediocrity.
