INSOMNIA: The Ark, sci fi post apocalyptic RPG for PC

This went under the radar but this neat looking RPG recently got a teaser trailer a few days ago. Russian game developers Studio MONO have announced that INSOMNIA will be released in 2018 on Steam and GOG for Windows, Mac and Linux.

I remember seeing this game on Steam Greenlight back in 2014 and it also had a Kickstarter. It looked pretty rough but certainly had some potential. I had completely forgotten about the game until now and man has it come a long way.

sorry but watching the trailer to get an idea of what is in the game leaves me not impressed and asking myself how is it different without coming up with an answer.

what am I missing?

@tryit: It doesn't need to be groundbreaking different to be good and I can't really think of any other recent sci fi post apocalyptic games other than maybe The Surge .

but the question becomes this:

if the game is not different from what i just played why should I play that game instead of the game I am playing right now?

so that is where finding 'difference' is critical

European game makers have such style. Witcher, Divinity: Original Sin, now this, this looks so much fun!!!

I saw this game years ago on Kickstarter glad to see its coming out

The setting seems cool. I like that this looks like a mixed between an third person shooter and an isometric rpg.

It has potential.

Love these kinds of indie RPGs.

When does it release?

@tryit: Guess you'll have to wait and see more of this game to determine if you want it, but since this is a singleplayer game eventually you'll reach completion of what you're already playing and want to move on to something else, for all you know the story in this game may be enough to pull you in.

when a person looks at the video and thinks to themselves 'hey that looks cool' my question is 'how does it look different from the game you just finisihed playing thus give me an inspiration as to why I might want to stop playing what I am playing now and pick up this game later which looks exactly the same'

The game looks decent to me, it probably is a standard third person shooter with a sci fi skin but I don't have a PS4 so I don't play many of those.

what is it about this game that is making one perk up with interest?

if I were to show you two survial games that appeared to you to be clones and if you were honestly intrested in knowing why I might be excited about one of them I would illustrate the difference.

that is what I am honestly asking here. where is the excitement? is it something I missed? a known developer? some IP?

You don't ask "why should I be interested?", no one is selling you the game you either like it or don't. That's the confusion with your original post. Give your opinion don't ask why others find it interesting everyone has different tastes and there own opinions on the game.

Looks ambitious, until it got to the gameplay which looks kind of janky and rough.

The setting looks cool, its a post apocalyptic game set on a ARK in space... You know like Noah's ark, a ship made to save people from the flood but in this case its a space ship.

Looks like it has nice production values and a cool sci-fi setting with an eye for detail, but it's gonna take more than that to sell the game alone. Could be trash, could be solid.

I'm away from Gamespot for a couple of hours and this is what I see, good god what have I done!?

Why didn't you just say that from the start, this game isn't your standard third person cover shooter its more of a third person game with a slightly top down camera angle. The devs refer to the gameplay as realtime strategy combat. Think of it as like the recent XCOM games but without the turn based part. Here is some footage from the prologue demo and the kickstarter. If you notice the aiming is pretty limited on the vertical scale unlike your average third person shooter where you have nearly as much free aim as a FPS.

I cant think of on the top of my head but I have seen that view plenty of times.

I guess for me when all the videos show is a bunch of combat my brain goes asleep and my bias kicks in. I have already played a lifetime supply of combat only games.

Probably the dumbest argument against a game. Its almost like "Looks like you do the same thing over and over in the, kill enemies rinse and repeat."

It looks interesting. Not sure I'm a fan of that combat, though. Or maybe it's the camera view; it's just strange.

Hey people! Thanks for covering our game on Gamespot and bringing it to the local audience. So I'm here to chew bubblegum and answer some questions. The teaser trailer is action based and mostly shows only one thing - combat. I can totally understand that people will assume this is the only thing there but hey, we had to start with something and make it short. It's a teaser trailer after all. We will have more video content coming in the future to demonstrate all other mechanics and cool features we have inside the game.

Are there plans for a console release?

@Pedro: there are, however we need to do good on Steam first. We are a small team with limited budget. In the perfect world we would release this game for all popular platforms, but in reality it all comes to the initial demand.

I hope you are able to succeed with your Steam launch to support a console release. Does the game support the controller on the PC or is it a mouse keyboard setup?

@Pedro: currently it's for mouse and keyboard but I don't see why we can't add controller support as well. We will launch a few rounds of beta tests soon to find out what people want us to do most.
