No way would I ever buy a DS or a PSP. They are only gaming devices. However, a iPhone and a iPod Touch both have features that people use anyways, and as such create a scenario where you are likely to have one anyways. Now that gaming on iPhone and iPod is revving up... I honestly think the iPhone / iPod is going to enter into the realm of serious gaming software. It's already got some awesome games, and is bound to get more as time goes by.

I'm sure Sony and Nintendo are a bit scared right now.

Hardly. The iPod Touch/iPhone target the cellphone market, the PSP and DS target the gaming market.

I'd never pay what there asking for an iphone.

Almost the same as i wouldn't pay what there asking for an ipod. Not when i can get a cheaper option that plays my music. I can't say i care about extra features, brand name or how sleek it looks.

Funny actually, I can't say I'd buy anything from Apple at this moment in time, it's all over priced crap aimed at teens trying to get the latest cool thing.

Hardly a joke thread. Just head over to IGN's iphone section and see the quality games yourself. The ability to make quality games on it has only been around for a year, and there is already some support coming on board. Riddle me this... what makes the PSP or the DS that much better then an iPod or iPhone, hardware wise?

Nothing. The problem is the software. The iPhone has nothing that can compete with TLoZ Link's Awakening or Wario Land 3. GBC games.

Have you folks ever played a game on an iphone? I agree that having real facebutton is nice, but it is hardly necessary unless you were playing some kind of button masher, in which your fingers might slip. Aside from that... onscreen buttons has been working great.

Pass on the iPhone. Over-priced over-hyped unnecessary toy. I'm not impressed or interested in any of Apple's i-* products right now. I'm surprised with how successful they've been with iPod given that it's just a media player that forces you to use their heavy iTunes app. So so lame. People need to learn how to use a computer and realize that with generic (and much cheaper) media players, all you need to do is drag and drop files into the media player. So much faster and easier and less intrusive. i-anything sucks.

Also, I believe that to use the SDK for iPhone development, you need to have a MAC. They should provide support for PCs since there's a lot more PCs out there. This sucks too and I would think that it will work against them. I would think that they'd want to allow PC developers to create for the iPhone as well. Maybe they're attempting to force developers over to the Mac? Whatever the reason, it doesn't seem like a good plan to me.

Finally. Thank you for actually making a good point. I agree. At the moment the PSP and DS have the software. However, if you look at the latest sales charts that have displayed the number of people buying games on a iPhone/iPod in comparison to those who own a DS or a PSP... there is clearly competition that is building up. Software comes in time. The thing is... Apple is finding it much easier to penatrate the market... why? because most people buy cell phones / MP3 players / PDAs anyways........ the fact that it plays games really well is a huge bonus.

Eh. For most people in the real world, its hardly a 'toy'. It's a multi-purpose device. Phone / Camera / PDA / Gaming Device. Overpriced? Compared to what??? Most phones cost $200 to begin with. Secondly... you do NOT need a MAC for the SDK. Please do a bit of research before making random statements.

you need a mac for the official iPhone SDK.

It is based on Xcode.

Unless you are going to VM/illegal route.

Sony and Nintendo are "freaking out" over the success of the iPhone as a gaming platform, according to Trip Hawkins, founder of Electronic Arts.

Apple provides a VM-based SDK which runs on windows just fine.

By the time the Iphone's gaming library reaches the current state of the DS and PSPs' libraries which it might not ever reach, newer systems or an even better gaming library will likely come, making the Iphone's gaming library unable to compete with the systems. The Iphone/Ipod touch may be better multimedia devices but lets face it, the PSP and DS will always be ahead. And as an owner of both the DS and PSP, I can say I'm quite happy with them but taking even just a glance at the Iphone's library tells me that these games are simply advanced cell phone games with touch screen compatibility. Nothing more.

Cellphones (and iPods) have a higher market appeal that gaming devices. That's a vey well known fact. Your whole argument is based on "what the iPhone could become", and the only way to know if you are right or not is waiting.

The quality of IP games is so inferior to what there is on the DS (and, I'm guessing, the PSP) it's laughable to compare them. Does the IP have potential to be a decent gaming machine? Sure, as games like Resident Evil prove you can mimick a console controller with mild success.. Is it a decent gaming machine as of now? I do not think so.

Which is exactly why they launched a marketing program to counter Apples slow but effective slam against Vista.

Because Microsoft has no fear of Apple.

[QUOTE="IronBass"][QUOTE="SquatsAreAwesom"]what makes the PSP or the DS that much better then an iPod or iPhone, hardware wise?SquatsAreAwesom
Nothing. The problem is the software. The iPhone has nothing that can compete with TLoZ Link's Awakening or Wario Land 3. GBC games.

Apple is finding it much easier to penatrate the market... why? because most people buy cell phones / MP3 players / PDAs anyways........ the fact that it plays games really well is a huge bonus.

its a phone, not suited for lots of gaming.and it faces competition itself..from other phones. It doesnt affects sony or nintendo handlhelds. And if it ever did, they will add phone support ,which is a tiny cheap chip around 5 bucks worth. And there goes the iphone into flames.

I have an Ipod Touch and I love it I watch movies and play games with it at work and listen to music when I workout.

Tiger Woods 10 is an amazing game on the iphone/touch:

Just drag your finger up and down it's right up there with the DS and PSP quality.

There is also this really cool game called amateur surgeon that plays basically like Trauma Center for the Wii and DS.
