I mean, do we really need it? Do we really get benefits out of it if we don't have immense sized TV's? Games could use their hardware power on other areas rather than resolution if the industry weren't forcing 4K on us.

Ive seen it, played with it, but can't see any real or significant gain from it.

And what do you think?

If you owned a 4K TV you would not be asking this question.

No you don't need it, but it is a nice thing to have. Overall nicer picture quality.

You do not need an immense sized TV to be able to discern the difference between 1080p and 4k. I'll see if i can dig up that study I posted on here a while ago, it had some decent examples.

Ultra Wide + 100 fps >> 4k at 60 fps or 30 fps.

Either way lol consoles.

Of course it's not necessary, but it definitely adds to the experience. But I guess it all comes down to personal preference... some might prefer the higher resolution, whilst some might prefer higher FPS for example.

That's why I love it when devs give us the option in their games.

I would say that it kind of is. 4K TVs are pretty affordable these days, most all movies have a 4K UHD disk release, and there’s a good amount of 4K streaming content. If you want to get another 2 years out of these consoles then they’re going to need to deliver 4K content as well.

4K TV's will be the norm in the near future so a gaming system which is intended to be played on these TV's should be developed to run at the native resolution.

Not the same study I had from last time.

https://application.wiley-vch.de/books/sample/3527403809_c01.pdf

Works out the eye can resolve a difference between two points 75um apart at about 250mm distance. ie. differences in about 0.017 of a degree, or 0 degrees 1' 1.2". I had heard anecdotally that it was about 2 degree seconds so I guess that's kind of close.

Ask that to your lords and saviors Sony. They should be pushing for higher frame rates, lower input lag and more responsive controls but they'd rather invest in resolution.

Both consoles are underpowered for pushing native 4k, but the HDR support does make a BIG difference.

4K isn't necessary at the moment especially with these Fake 4K consoles. The only time I like to game in 4K is if I don't compromise framerate and visuals.

A lot of the time I'll take 1440p with ultra settings and higher frames over 4K/30 with compromised visuals.

Are video games necessary?

The same question was asked in 2009 by someone with a 720p, regarding 1080p. Was 1080p necessary? 720p?

As long as the framerate doesn't drop lower than 60 FPS, it's fine.

4k at 30 FPS is a joke.

Give me a break dude. You played in less than 1080p on PS3 many times. My TV upscaled to 1080 and it was fine last gen. But with 4k its different? Come on brah

Edit: I misunderstood you. Sorry it’s late here. 4K isn’t necessary right now because there aren’t any GPUs that can hit 4K Ultra @ 60fps all the time. It’s still too resource heavy to hit 4K at ultra settings for most PCs what more weakass consoles.

I try to hit 4K as much as possible without graphical and performance compromise. I’d rather have higher frames than hitting 4K. Gaming at 60fps and above is more of a priority for me than hitting 4K and getting subpar performance and having to dial down settings. When we finally get GPUs that can run 4K without breaking a sweat then 4K will become a standard for me just like how 1440p is now.

It’s a joke that MS is prioritizing 4K on the XboneX when they haven’t even mastered 1080p yet lol. The result is we get games running at medium settings or subpar trash performance like PUBG.

Gaming hardware is not ready for 4K yet (even the GTX 1080Ti struggles to push 60 FPS at 4K). Neither is TV programming (there are only a handful of 4K broadcasts in most western countries).

I expect 4K to become more mainstream by around 2020-2022.

Nonsense. PC gamers need to accept that 4K gaming has arrived on consoles and stop using framerate as the sole measurement of validity. Did they pull this crap last gen? Was it "1080p at 30fps is a joke"? What am I asking...of course; 30fps is always a joke to them.

LMAO at the "industry forcing 4K on us".

It was gamers and gaming sites like this one, IGN and hundreds of others that made resolution a big deal in 2014 through 2016. AMAZING how its all somebody else's fault now. Even funnier that it is an unidentifiably somebody like "the industry". No, this forum was a cesspool of "Teh Xbone is too weak with 900p while PS4 does 1080p". Amazing how there was a significant gain on playing games at 1080p as opposed to 900p. Hhmm that's peculiar because the differences in pixel count now are often much bigger between Pro and X1X. But it isn't significant anymore. Wow, that's some real babybackballbagbullshit right there.

WTF do people expect? Of course if the hardware manufacturers see gamers and sites make a big deal of something they are going to try to be the top at it. Its us, the gamers that brought 4k and resolution wars upon ourselves. It seems only Cows cant accept this now that they are on the losing end of it 99% of the time.

lol lems, MS successfully tricked you clowns your machine is a 4K console when it’s actually a FauxK console like Pro. It hits 4K in a more games than the Pro but the truth is a majority of its games are still checkerboard or dynamic 4K like the Pro. Don’t kid yourselves, you spent $500 more on a more powerful Pro without the games ?.

No its not a joke. Read my reply to TC.

IT WAS US the gamers that made resolution a big deal. Don't pretend you and the cows didn't wet your pants every time a multiplat was 900p on teh weak Xbone vs 1080p on PS4 from 2014 to 2016. I have posts and linkage ready dude. Don't be a liar. We both know its all in fun but lets be real here.

If I was a car manufacturer, and all of a sudden driving on 5 wheels was the rage that everyone including auto magazines and sites were talking about. Of course I am going to make 5 wheel cars and go further by saying mine are ALL WHEEL DRIVE!!!

Stop blaming MSFT for being a corporation. We made resolution a thing. Gamers did this and now want to take it back. Life doesn't work that way kiddies.

And Ive had more fun in PUBG on my X than Horizon 0 yawn. FUN does anyone remember FUN? The reason people play that game even in its state is its fvcking FUN to play. Uno is fun to play. It has no graphics.

@cainetao11: It was a big deal at the start of the gen because the PS4 was hitting 1080p for $100 cheaper. We were supposed to be in a new gen and the Xbone was still playing games at 720p and charging people $500 for it. It was embarrassing and that’s why people dogged MS.

MS now jumped the gun and started shooting for 4K to heal their injured egos and appease butthurt lems’ egos. Such a jump was unnecessary seeing as how it hasn’t helped them at all with changing the narrative this gen, and they are still getting their asses handed to them by the PS4. They would have been much better off waiting till next gen to launch a powerful true Native 4K console when 4K will actually be more mainstream in households. The FlopBoneX was a wasteful stopgap to soothe MS’ bruised ego after they got rekt by Sony at the start of the gen.

Last I check PS4 Pro was released prior the One X making that last paragraph not only incorrect but embarrassingly incorrect. Your fanhood is getting the best of you.

@boycie: Where are you getting that from ?? I never mentioned anything about PUBG and PS4. Don’t try to deflect from the fact that PUBG runs like ass on the FlopBoneX.

And people act like there wasn't more tech in the box with X1.

It doesn't matter how you feel about Kinect. It logically cost more to put in the box and therefore rose the price.

That's where the extra $100 came from. The difference in GPU power was .5 TFLOPS. Now its almost 2 TFLOPS so yeah, X1X is a bargain if we're going to pretend that's the ONLY reason Cows shit on X1 at the start. I'm calling bullshit.

Cows did it because they got shat on the previous gen in terms of multiplats. So they loved being able to do it back. We can all rationalize bro. I don't buy it.

It depends on who's narrative you subscribe to. I lol at cows because they bitch out now with threads like this one because they get shelled in Multiplats again. Xbox will never be as popular as PlayStation world wide. NEVER. Who cares? My stocks are in the green and MSFT makes me more money than SNE. So big deal. Who cares?

MS jumped the gun? I bought a PRO day one dude. I remember its reveal special. 4k was mentioned throughout it. MS jumped the gun? Really? Let me guess, the Pro was only for VR? GTFO bro. The reveal spent plenty of time on 4k gaming. The box advertises 4k gaming a year before the X1X. Come on dude.
