This is true. Sounds great to me. I was mostly talking about a unit-to-unit comparison. What one game offers compared to one movie, one round of golf, etc. True. Any hobby is as expensive as one makes it. Gaming is just really cheap compared to most unless one wants everything.foxhound_fox

True enough. Wanting everything is pretty damn expensive. I rock all the consoles and a PC and still manage to game on them all. It gets tough when school comes around and the payments roll in :(

Unit-to-unit, games offer quite a lot of bang for your buck.

$60 is cheap considering new games can cost $100-$120 in Australia.

I think it depends on the game, like for instance I believe mass effect 3 was worth $60 but I believe AC revelations was not. It all depends on the game.

Considering the cost of making games these days, and the fact prices in North America have declined in the past two decades... they are way too f*cking cheap. It's no wonder publishers are trying to make more money through DLC and online passes, they are taking huge risks with some games and almost just giving them away.foxhound_fox

Indeed. Gamers are so selfish and ungrateful wanting to save money, buying used or bargain bin prices, not realizing the hard work that goes into a game. Pre-orders, collector's editions, day 1 DLC's, season passes, mmo's, oh the humanity. Next thing you know, you will see Ubisoft, Bioware and Capcom employees wearing 'Will dev for food' t-shirts.

The thing is that gaming is not a substitute good for a round of golf.SW__Troll
This is entirely subjective. I enjoy golfing, but not nearly as much as gaming or reading. I am applying the same "value" across the hobbies because it is the only way to remain objective about it. People favour certain hobbies over others, so of course they are going to be fine with spending $60 for a round of golf on a nice course if they enjoy golf more than gaming. I personally would never spend that much to go golfing (at least at my current level of income). But I would spend that much on a game, and do so on a fairly regular basis.

Remember the 90s? 1dollar gas, $40 for a ps1 game with 50 hours of gameplay or more vs $60 for 6hour campaign and $4+ gas... as of today, what a life we live in now huh?

SaltyMeatballs

What 50 hour games were you playing? Oh wait, RPG's. Today you have games like Skyrim, hundreds of hours.

Don't give me that back in my day bullsh*t, it's all a lie, other games were short you just died a lot and sucked.

Lol if that feeds your internetz ego than ahead stuff yourself to obesity. Yes Im talking bout rpgs a good portion of which arent hard but of course filled with storylines. Its a common thing back then but of course you cherry picked a game like Skyrim out of the few which is more a sandbox thus the lengthy hours and still cost $60, not $40 bite meh. Seriously I dont fancy this whole bro-gamer era of bs, I dont believe in console fps bs, and I refuse to freely forkover $60 for crappy singleplayer that most seem so thrilled about but thats just my 2 cents.

Yes, but there isn't. Crap games still cost over $100 on release, and might still be after months and months,

Yep I usually wait 'till $20, but I buy plenty at $40. I haven't paid $60 since... well I can't remember. I'm not a huge console/PC gamer though.

Yes, but not relative to the amount of money it takes to develop the game. There is no reason to pay the $60 when you can just wait a couple months for the price to drop, which it always inevitably does.

Based on inflation since gaming started, $60 is far too low. Depends on your perspective.

Its happening in the UK. The two biggest game shops can't afford to stock ME3, had to cancel everyone's pre-order. They've even said no to stocking any future EA games.

I think $40 is good, id buy a lot of games if they were only $40,

hadoken
I think it depends on the game. I break it down into time/money thing, myself. I'm really enjoying Skyrim right now. I have about 80 hours playing time. At $60, that comes out to less than $2 an hour. That's value, if you ask me. On the flip side, If you get through a single player campaign in 5 or 6 hours, and really don't visit the multiplayer component...

I have steam and I live in the US. Cheap games galore. Once in a blue moon I buy a full priced game or a collector's edition if the bonuses are good enough. Gmes in the cartridge days were more expensive than they are now.

they should be a clean $50

I think controllers are TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO expensive. I hate, and I mean it: HATE that controllers cost as much as games. I've gone through about 5 controllers thanks to friends and family. They aren't as durable as last gen controllers, because I can still use my Gamecube controllers and none of them broke.

Really wish the price for controllers were maybe $20-40, because $60 for a controller is out of control.

Stop letting them treat your hardware like crap. I've had two 360 pads, 1 PS3 pad, and 1 Wiimote since launch on all the systems. Treat things with some respect and don't toss them around. They are high tech things, not pillows.

you dumb ass shiiits, im talking about games like final fantasy xiii 2, UFC undisputed 3, im not going to pay $60 because they arent a halo or a gears or an uncharted for u ps3 kids, and they suffer more because of that, if they charged $40 more people would buy games like thosehadoken

The loss of 20 bucks in sales wouldn't counteract the increase in sales. People can just wait till the price drops. Its better to start at a high price and drop because you get more immediate profit.

With services like Amazon and Free Super Saver Shipping, used book stores and the internet (for e-books)... I'm surprised anyone would pay MSRP for a book these days. I bought a copy of the complete works of Shakespeare at a book sale for $2 CAD. Hardback. Complete with that pleasant mildew smell.

Nah, gaming isn't a cheap hobby. And if you want to be up to date with the games, you gotta shell out the cash. Smart people can find the games for a little cheaper though, but I'd rather just make my life a little easier by walking into the local game store and walking out with the game in hand. Nothing like that drive home with a new game.:D.

It depends on what kind of game you buy. If you buy a game like Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and take y our time and complete a lot of side missions you're looking at 70+ hours. Besides it beats the cost of a movie in terms of length.

I don't toss 'em around like most people I know, but I do play fighters alot and usually abuse the face buttons. It's not the buttons that are messed up on the controllers: it's the analog stick. They always seem to wear out.

I play Halo and usually hold the left stick in to crouch which I guess wear it out.

Still doesn't warrant the controllers to be the same price as games though.

I rarely pay more than $20 (by purchasing the game's serial directly). It's too risky to spend even as much as $40 on a game I might possibly think is doo-doo.

considering we now get three fourths of a game and Day 1 DLC I'd say YES, $60 is a ripoff.

considering we now get three fourths of a game and Day 1 DLC I'd say YES, $60 is a ripoff.theBeorn

Especially when you can get a complete edition (literally complete as in how it should have been on release but wasn't) down the line for less money.

I can wait for most games. Only Rockstar/Valve/Blizzard or other games I'm very hyped about are the ones that I get day one anymore.

1. The vast majority of games I've played aren't worth more than $10-$20 (my perceived value.)

2. That said, even a 6 hour campaign can cost tens of millions to develop. How can devs recoupe their costs if people don't perceive the product to be worth $60?

3. They have to grow the base, by nurturing it with low prices and making it accessable.

4. Hollywood movies cost 100's of millions, yet people watch them for $8 at the theatre and they're still profitable. Why?

5. Because movies have a huge base, if 100 million people pay $5 to watch something, that's $500 million.

6. Whereas video games are a tiny base, with much lower sales than movies.

7. Bottom line you need to make gaming accessable, with easy hardware requiements and low prices. The day when games are $5-$10 is the day piracy becomes irrelevant, and you grow your fanbase to be able to support the industry at those prices, just like movies.

[QUOTE="lundy86_4"]Gaming is an expensive hobby. It always has been.foxhound_fox
Relatively to other hobbies it is the pretty much the second cheapest. Golf for instance will set you back at least $40-50 for one game of 18 holes if you don't own your own clubs (which start at about $100 and can easily break $1000, not to mention shoes and other clothing) and that will be about 4.5 hours of entertainment... which you will have to walk and carry or drag your clubs (on a pull cart). A devoted golfer can spend thousands a year on green fees alone if they go every weekend over the summer. Movies cost $10-15 for 2 hours or less at the theater, without the cost of food. $20-30 for the same movie on a disc. Only now with services like Netflix have they become cheaper (which still doesn't offer every movie available). Cable will start at $40-50 a month. Internet starts at $20. For a 6 hour long game, that can be replayed an infinite amount of times, $60 isn't that bad at all. And a 100+ hour game? It's like pennies a minute. People really have no idea how cheap gaming really is. It is a sense of entitlement, that "I have to play this game!" attitude that makes people think they should be able to afford every game on launch day, regardless of their income. Currently, I have spent nothing this year so far on games. Either my GF bought them (just CoDMW3) or I borrowed them from a friend (everything else I've played on PS3). And my total budget for games this year is looking to be in about the $250 range. Which is going to go mostly to Dark Souls, Journey/Flower and whatever Collector's Edition Ubisoft can put together for ACIII. It really makes me wonder how many people who complain about the cost of games are just kids still in high school. People who haven't experienced what a budget and bills are like.

You know its sad that you have to sit and explain this to them. Isn't it obvious guys? I think your last sentence regarding kids is more than likely true they just have NO idea. Games are cheap this is pretty much true across the board for the amount of hours you can spend on them.

Nope, indie games that only cost 5-10 dollars get pirated too and movies get pirated too.
