I never got the point of these posts where people brush aside what the game does very well and then concentrate on the weakpoints. The same thing can be done on every single game you listed that you think is better. Fallout suffered from poor story, terrible combat, a crapload of bugs, poor AI..but is a damn good RPG. Planescape Torment's combat is awful, the creature variety is abysmal and the pacing of dungeons is almost non existant but it has one of the best stories in gaming. Even Mass Effect 2 can barely call itself an RPG with a piss poor leveling system (why not just give people points to assign after missions because no matter how many things they kill, don't kill on a map it was similar amounts of EXP.) boring probing, unbalanced character stories (some were pretty good while others were dull) and a paltry main story... it's simple to say a game is overrated.smerlus
I do not call Mass Effect 2 the greatest RPG of all time...the best this year, absolutely. One of the elite, yes...not the greatest of all time. Also notice I called the game "overrated" ONLY BECAUSE many call it the greatest PC game ever. I picked Deus Ex and highlighted its flaws because it is one of the least criticized games on this board.

From what I have seen, the only reason Deus Ex is claimed as the best game ever is because the "hardcore" fans that overrate it so much don't even know what genre it is. Since the game is a FPS there is no way any other FPS will reach the awesomeness that Deus Ex contains.

Obviously when you see that it is an Action Adventure/RPG and start doing more proper comparisons you realize that even when it is somewhat unique it has flaws here and there.

That said I liked more System Shock 2.

Oh and TC, what didn't you like in the shooting mechanics? That is the only thing that it has better over SS2, where it was basically just an issue of how much damage you do and what weapons you can use. Deus Ex shooting system was way superior.

glez13

The shooting mechanics, especially for the assault rifle were extremely clunky. The assault rifle just does not feel right at all, even for its time. Then there is the pistol... The sequels shooting mechanics were pretty bad as well.

[QUOTE="badtaker"]8.2 = overrated ??lpjazzman220

i dont think hes talkin the pro's i think hes talking the community...i see it get praised nearly everyday on here as the greatest rpg/fps hybrid...not that its a bad game...but its becoming like halo....a good idea....that has average mechanics....and is loved waaaay too much by its fan base...is it good--yes....is it a genre defining game--thats debatable...is it the greatest pc game ever---definitely not...not even in the running....is it fun--sometimes...other times waaay to frustrating because of broken mechanics....

Exactly

Seeing as it's the single greatest achievement in the history of mankind, no, it isn't overrated :P

Seriously though, while there are a few games I like better (Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, Baldur's Gate II, Metroid Prime, to name a few) the game is seriously awesome and I can totally understand somebody thinking it is the greatest game in the history of forever.

Personally I still haven't finished it just because I found it boring. Shooting someone in the face or stabbing them in the face isn't really diversity to me.

Casboof

You can go stealth also.

Anyway I know what you feel. The first time I played it I was under the impression it was a FPS. First level and was like this game sucks you can't even shoot properly, just like two or three enemies, this game sucks. Uninstalled it in like 20 minutes.

Years later I was tired of FPS so I searched my old games to see what was good that wasn't a FPS. Found it, gave it a try and great game. Overrated by the fanboys but great game.

If Deus Ex was released today with a next gen facelift but everything else intact, I think it could still score a 9.0, that's how revolutionary its gameplay/story was then.

I think people don't what like Metal Gear solid and Final fantasy 7 brought to gaming i mean Metal Gear was like movie quality music story, and the gameplay was just epic I mean i remember playing the VR mission's because I just couldn't get enough of killing those soldiers and moving them around and doing crazy stuff using box's to hide dues ex brought nothing to the table metal gear solid 1 came out in 1998 2 years before dues ex and think about how much that game changed gaming it was the most highly rated game ever made and its easily a better game then dues ex as far as what new things it brought to the table and the game itself and story an all is better the music is better i mean the game came out 2 years before and knock the crap out of dues ex so that tells u it can't be the best game ever on pc imo

it has its flaws. the AI can be pretty stupid (though some of its flaws are just to keep the game fun) you cant pick up bodies until it has no items the graphics, even when it was released, were not great. it started out badly (the first mission is boring). its not perfect. however when asked what i think is the best game ever made DE1 always comes to mind. when i challenge that thought i cant think of anything better. i have played many crackin games that i would recommend to anyone and love to bits......but i cant think of one single game that is better. nothing from SMG to the baldurs gate series or even the majestic rome total war. not in my book anyway. vampire bloodlines came close. on paper it had the fantastic gameplay backed by a more interesting story and characters and it looked and sounded better and the world looked to be a more interesting place to be in....all the making of a DE1 beater. but it was released in a broken state and the dev (troika....RIP) then went bust. a terrible shame. DE1 is not perfect....no game is. but i cant think of a better one.

I think it is. I could never get more than a few hours into it. It just wasn't fun. It seemed complicated just for the sake of being complicated to me.Guppy507

It's not, it's actually relatively simple. Giving the player freedom of choice to progress in ways that matches the players abilities is not complicated at all, it's just logical. The game does seem to reward stealth more than going guns blazing though.

And no, Deus Ex is not overrated. It may have some flaws, but that dosn't take away from the fact the game is one of a kind. It shows a great potential for what the FPS genre can deliver, potential that has not been properly exploited.

I did beat Deus Ex for the first time last month and I must say it's a great game. Is it the best PC game of all time? No but it was a rather unique experience. It is not perfect but it deserves the praise it gets.

It is personally in my top 10 favorite PC games of all time. As for Invisible War I have iot too but have not played it yet.

Yes it would, as it was the spiritual successor to System Shock 2, which was better than DX.

Yeah, actually forgot about that. Still havn't got around to playing System Shock 2. I was getting confused because of all the interviews from staff who worked on Bioshock talking about how awesome Dues Ex was.

I play mainly rpgs just to let you know, but if a game gives me options to try stealth or go all out and shoot, then guess what? I'm going to try out both options and see how it works.I like to explore my options and that's how I noticed how horrible the shooting mechanics were.

Hahaha no. The sheer amount of choice you have to progress through each level makes it so awesome that no one will be able to replicate similar gameplay options. Developers these days are far too lazy to let you have half a dozen ways to deal with most situations, usually the only options now are a bit of half assed stealth or run and gun.

Look at everything Skrat_01 has said, the guy talks sence.

Deus Ex, is brilliant because anybody can make the game their own, they can be stealthy, or rambo, or techy or...because the game has an answer for everyone. I think every situation has AT LEAST 3 solutions. The game has loads of replayability because of this choice, the Cause/Effect system works tremendously well. The first level if off putting and the game seems complicated to start, but thats because it tries to show you everything you can do at once, but thats not possible because its all about experimenting with different choicesand finding what works for you.

I say you need to get the the 3rd misson of Deus Ex to find out what its really about. Even today no other game is like it, thats 10 years and still unrivaled!

The Human Revolution necropost........... The new Deus Ex game shows just how flawed and overrated the first game was. Human Revolution shoots better, is far better written, has far better characterization, has a far better atmosphere and moral an dpolitical relevance, and is a tad more balanced. Also the choice and consquence system is far better in HR as well. Is Deus Ex overrated? YES The first game was GREAT IN CONCEPT but MEDIOCRE IN EXECUTION. Yes, its nice to have all the options and freedom, but they are simply not implimented well and not balanced. Add to the horrendous story problems and the one dimensional characterization. It is a highly overrated game. A great model for gameplay concepts, but nothing more. New Vegas and DX:Human Revolution is just far better.

It's one of my most hated games of all time.

But it's not overrated in any way. It does what it does, and performs it well. Well, for other people.

Deus Ex is great, easily a top 20 or top 30 PC game, but it is only the greatest PC game of all time if you ignore Civilization, Pirates!, SimCity, Ultima IV and VII, XCOM: UFO Defense, Tie Fighter, Starcraft, Doom, Quake, Half Life, Planescape Torment, Fallout, Command in Conquer, and even System Shock 2 and more. DX wasn't even the best PC game of 2000, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn is the top.

All I can say is this: I bet you every penny to my name that there is at least one person for each of those examples who can rattle off a list of flaws for those titles and reason why those games are nowhere near "legendary" as some others may claim. I'm not denying those examples are great games as the ones I played (never played pirates or system shock 2) left me with with reasons why I play games in the first place. Despite this, all I know is games such as Deus Ex left me with an extremely satisfying experience and nothing you can say or do can change that.

However, the flaws of those games were from being the first and they were not flaws at the time. Deus Ex's flaws are flaws at the time. No other game heralded by PC gamers have so many flaws for the pedestal its on, and these were flaws at its time. Gamespot nailed its review. Good concept but lacking in execution.

I mean the first game, not Human Revolution. And Human Revolution destroys GeOW3.........
