Hello,

So After i played and complete Doom reboot twice. Its Excellent game, GOTY so far by far. best FPS in years however i go back to Doom 3 and look into it. i research, compare and realise that Doom 3 is imo still better game. Doom 3 was a game that i think was rival to Half life 2.

new Doom is reimagination of old Doom games however Doom 3 was true evolution of franchise. it was dark, has horror elements (that are much better than shitty resident evil series), suspense, and best part imo the flashlight. in a terms of experience Doom 3 is easily the best.

what do you think?

I think it's a pretty boring game, to be honest. The atmosphere going for it is a replica of Half Life and System Shock 2, with different design choices from these two games sprinkled around (like the PDAs).

The gunplay is abysmal, i can't exactly pinpoint it, but it's probably a combination of inappropriately weak sound, underwhelming gun animation and little to no hit reaction from enemies, besides that they also just simply vanish into thin air upon death resulting in no gore to tickle that sadistic bone we all have, more or less.

Doom 3 is a poor man's Resident Evil, or poor man's Half-Life. It doesn't feel like a Doom game.

The main issue I have with Doom 3 is not switch in sub-genre but the same issue Halflife 2 has, anemic shooting - for much of the early parts of the game weapons feel very ineffective. The humanoid enemies, rather than having what would is tantamount to good AI, simply lock onto the player with instant hits.

In Return Castle Wolfenstien they circumvent this but having the AI's accuracy decrease significantly with distance - the huge levels accommodate this. It makes them challenging, without feeling cheap - the players weapons do increased damage compared to Doom 3 with the ability to move faster.

Thankfully a few mods exist to improve the gameplay. I'd say it's still better than Rage, with that being id's weakest game but at the same time nowhere near as bad as people like to portray, it has alot of good points to it - such as it's enemy designs, which are magnificent.

Doom 3 is boring. Gunplay is not good, levels are extremely linear, sound effects are underwhelming, AI is very basic and horror elements aren't that good either. It's poor man's Half Life and System Shock 2. Overall, it's not a very memorable game.

What atmosphere? You people are mistaking obviously being mildly dark with conveying a genuine sense of tone, mood, and place.

Resident Evil's remake has atmosphere. Metroid Prime has atmosphere. Deus Ex has fucking atmosphere. Doom 3 is a shitty corridor shooter where the lights are turned off for cheap jump scares and for id to go "look at our purty engine". No sense of pace, no handle on cadence, poor encounter designs, taking all the negatives of key hunting with none of the inherent positives of Doom 2's mazes, and added bonus it fucking has the worst gunplay in a Doom game. Shit it has bad gunplay for an id shooter.

I know uninspired has made a dissertation on how RE4 hands ammo like candy after a certain point, but RE4 has more gameplay ideas than entire franchises have in all their entries combined. So yeah I'm going to go and laugh at the notion that a glorified one trick pony, that doesn't even execute it's one trick all that well is somehow better than an action game whose core is superb and is basically the most varied shooter of any kind, be it FPS or TPS, without the sucking at the action like Half Life 2 part.

lol suspense. It's time to graduate from goosebumps mate.

Resident Evil 4's combat is divine, that's not the route you want to go with son. Maybe actually play some of the games you talk about, it'll help.

Doom 3 is not the best Doom game, but I do not find it the worst either, in truth I consider Doom 3 its own beast, and not really a Doom game, which is not a negative.

the Negatives of Doom 3:

Shooting is pretty damn bad, yes it is pretty horrible, someone stated that HL2 and Doom 3 shares this trait, I agree.

The vanishing of corpses is a pretty damn annoying thing. Does have a negative impact on the game itself, when you can hardly see where you have been, and there is nothing there to show for a battle (can be changed on the PC version though).

The story drops the ball a few places, it is not the worst drop, in any game, but some times the story almost contradicts itself.

While the shadow work in the game is really awesome, it is simply too dark in places.

The Positives:

The Pacing of Doom 3, while not like the other Doom games, is pretty damn well done, it can go from action filled gunfights to slow walks through eerily empty areas.

Monsters ok I will state this now, Doom 3, has some of the best reimagination of classical games.

Sound: This is where Doom 3 is head and shoulders above any other Doom game, the sound design in Doom 3 is outright impressive, the minimalistic music helps to reinforce the sound design, how engines will have a low chant or talk to you within the engine noises, the high pitched industrial compounds. I can't remember now but did the sound not also go more quiet or lose notes outside?

(Music is not worth mentioning though, All other doom games have better music).

That they allows you to be at the beginning of the invasion is a rather neat thing, I would wish you have a longer time span before things went bad.

Bahahaha.. Doom 3 isn't a Doom game.. It's a game with stupid ass mechanics (mankind masters space travel, but our flashlight/night vision technology apparently is stuck in the 1970s), bad gunplay, and relied entirely too much on jump out scare tactics.. FEAR was a vastly superior game that released shortly after that was better in every way possible..

Doom 3 is trash.

It would enjoy its short time in the spotlight before being inevitably overshadowed by HL2 if it wasn't utterly outdone at absolutely everything it was going for by Chronicles of Riddick and Far Cry months before its own damn release.

@R10nu: Yep.. In the far future we have mastered robotics, space travel and the ability to colonize Mars.. But our flashlight technology has been at a stand still since the mid 20th century... Not to mention how freaking bad flashlights are in video games, including this one.. Where for some reason flashlights only illuminate a very narrow cone in a enclosed environment.

I think Doom 3 must have been TC's first Doom game. He may have played the first two in the past, but probably not old enough to appreciate what he was playing; or he played them after 3.

People who grew up playing the original doom fell in love with the Formula. That's why most love the new DOOM and hate Doom 3. Doom 3 just isn't a doom game, like the originals or 2016 Remake.

Silly jump scares and dark corridors are a kindergarten's approach to "horror elements".

Doom 3 sucks. The pace sucks, the shooting sucks, the enemies sucked, the level design sucked. The only thing that didn't suck about it was the great graphics especially the lighting/shadows.

As a shooter it's a mediocre experience and as a sequel to Doom 2 it's an abomination.

Once realized the player cam stagger enemies and consequently knife them to death, exploit ladders and doors, any suspense in Resident Evil 4 dissipates. Most of the boss battles are fairly badly designed as well.

Doom on the higher difficulties tends to be a fairly challenging game with the humanoid gun wielding enemies, generally being the only cheap enemies. On the highest difficulty health and armor will continually drip creating the paradoxical effect of caution and urgency.

As far as the survival aspects go, Doom 3 is actually very good, far superior to Resident Evil 4, Dead Space and a great many other titles.

The idea of the flashlight itself, though hated even by the developer and pretty much every human in existence - is an admirable, and much forgotten concept of not empowering the player - something a game like Dead Space severally lacks, and generally the nail in coffin for any aspirations of being a horror title outside of cool audio.

Doom 3 was certainly a much creepier game, and overall had a much more substantive story, but its combat mechanics weren't nearly as satisfying as the latest Doom reboot.

Nah, the original DOOM and DOOM 4 are the best to me.

DOOM 4 is pretty much the sequel to the original DOOM ... especially when they say they got DOOMguy in a sarcophagus in Hell. It is like Hell connect all realities, DOOMguy lived through Hell and once and has to do it again.

It's really hard for me to compare them, because they are so different. I think that Doom 3 was a game that moved the FPS genre forward in some ways (it was sort of the next leap in FPS survival horror, I suppose). Even today, it still feels great to play mechanically as well, and it still looks great.

That said, I feel like Doom is almost a bigger achievement in some ways. The FPS world has changed dramatically since Doom 3 was released - the way that Doom re-captures the feeling of the original while also feeling new and bringing forward some genuine innovation, is pretty incredible.

I'd say that I prefer Doom over Doom 3, but Doom 3 is a fantastic game that deserves all the credit it gets. I just think the two games are so different in some fundamental ways, that it's very hard to compare them.

Anyways, nah, Doom 3 sucks. Even trying to play it recently with mods that greatly improve some short comings it's still an underwhelming game. And enough of this "experience" talk as if it's something that is inherently separate from gameplay across the board, please.

Also, bros, let's call Doom 4 what it is. Doom 4.

I got bored pretty quick with the new Doom. I didn't think it was all that great myself and felt kinda repetitive after a while. Reminded me of playing Quake 3 arena in SP but with larger detailed maps and demons.

Doom 3 BFG isn't bad. However the level design is pretty bland. I can only stand to see pipes running along so many steel walls before my mind zombifies.

Doom 3 is a very bad Doom game.

But on its own, its a very good game. I enjoyed it tremendously and have replayed it a few times. I liked how the whole facility actually looked real with functioning parts, processes and equipment, a "lived" in atmosphere. I really enjoyed crawling through its corridor but i guess this is subjective. Its gunplay is not the best but come on, its passable and functional, its certainly not a complete utter wreck. The audio is fantastic. It didnt need a soundtrack, the level itself will sing at you as you enter different parts of the facility, like another poster pointed out. Its amazing. Graphically, it certainly has aged pretty damn well.

If it wasn't titled Doom 3, reception would be a lot better I think.

@uninspiredcup: Doom 3 is better then RE4 and Dead Space? Hahahahaha!!! Doom 3 can't touch any of the RE or Dead Space games...well maybe DS3.

I actually just played doom3 recently, the ps3 bfg edition, and enjoyed it a lot. But that flashlight, had I played the original version the game would have sucked, that concept was a game breaker no matter how you try to sugar coat it. And while it was a good game, its the worst of the Doom series and no where near games like RE1-5, DS 1-2, etc.

I liked Doom 3. I am going to get Doom and Doom 2 soon after I play through Wolfenstein 3D and it's expansion.

Doom 3 was slow and boring. Which would have been fine if it was scary, but it wasn't. It was just slow and boring. The story was ****ing trash, it was cliched and generic as hell, and it was predictable. I can't count the number of times I was like, "well, look at this...I'm gonna take another few steps and then either a trap door will open behind me or a monster will teleport behind me." That is not scary.

Also, that might have been okay if the game made me feel desperate and outmatched, but the enemies were all stupid as hell and I never had a shortage of ammo.

But yeah...there was a lot of blood on the walls. And there were a lot of times when the lights went out. Spooky, man!
