Series has been going on since the PS2 days. Almost all of the titles have been highly anticipated and sell millions, which is hard to do for the genre. Why do you think that is so, SW? And is there an IP that can compete for that title?

Yeah I'm pretty sure it is, and by a good margin too.
Why do you think that is so, SW?
It's easily accessible and doesn't demand homework from the player. It strives for a serious narrative more so than its competitors. Its production values are clearly a cut above what the rest of the genre has to offer. It has a more appealing setting than most of its competitors. It's loaded with "epic" sequences and set pieces. And most importantly, MARKETING.
Why people always knock God of War's accessibility?
I'm not knocking it at all though?
I understand that the game is that way by design and I understand that people love it. Nowhere in my post did I say that's a bad thing.
I think God of Wars approach to things is fine. I have no issue with the series. The only time I shit on God of War is when people try to put its battle system on the same level as games that do it infinitely better.
The reason why DMC and NG seems more difficult because questionable AI/controls/off screen enemy attack etc
Did you honestly think I would humor this with a response?
Plz bro.

Edit: I'll give you a half response for the last bit, only because it exposes your lack of knowledge of these games.
DMC doesn't have off-screen enemy attacks. That's an important part of how those games work. You would know that right off the bat if you played them.
NG/NGB/NGS has systems in place that make off-screen attacks flow with the combat. Same as above, simply playing the games would teach you this.
If you were talking about Ninja Gaiden 2 specifically? Sure. The I.S. Ninjas are a problem in that game and rockets are no fun either. Still has little to do with why the game is challenging.
I'm not even big on the genre, but I gotta say "no". Ninja Gaiden and Bayonetta are clearly better franchises.
EDIT: you mean sales? I have no idea about that tbh.
Devil May Cry and off screen attacks; what is life?
God of War sells because it's the CoD equivalent of the genre. It has an aesthetic with broader appeal and a gameplay loop for the less seasoned gamer. As a game it's fundamentally mediocre outside of one entry in th genre: God of War 2.
GoW is certainly the best hack and slash/beat em up franchise ever. It may not be the best in all areas, but taken as a whole, it is the best.
Yeah right behind Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta and Devil May Cry. Actually I'd also put Viewtiful Joe above it. It's top 5. Its gameplay is pretty mediocre compared to the top tiers but it's good in other areas. Nice graphics, fun, epic, engaging etc.
@jg4xchamp: The only God of War entry that is mediocre is Assensions, the rest are all fantastic games with solid gameplay, great visuals and interesting setting and characters.
I agree with him. I have fun with the game but it is mediocre gameplay-wise which is the bread and butter of Hack-n-Slash games.

God Hand, Otogi, Wonderful 101, Revengeance quite a few more in the genre are better.

Kratos is a dreadful character, the plot is absolutely atrocious if you put any thought into it.
@jg4xchamp: and those too lol. Except I haven't played Revengeance. Been sitting in my backlog for 2 years now.
You should, the final boss of that game is the fucking coolest.
It's so gloriously dumb. lol. The game treats Metal Gear's stupid ass lore with exactly the respect it deserves: none, what so ever.

lol
not even close
It's certainly the game that sold me on the genre as a whole. I love how brutal and quick the combat feels, and the setting and enemy variety is what won me over.
Ascension did start to feel a bit stale... But I wish the franchise would've evolved in different ways instead of what they are going for now.
I just can't fathom the combat system feeling as responsive or visually attractive, now that they have switched camera positions and changed the gameplay.
@jg4xchamp: Sorry but I don't see him as a dreadful character and I also see nothing wrong with the plot or story of the series. I'm also not alone seeing the games sell like crazy.
Just so we're clear, I'm not allowed to share my displeasure with the games or the characters, because other people like them? Not much of a discussion their mate.
So TC doesn't respond to his threads. Interesting.
What do you want me to respond to? Diablo is more of an RPG with hack and slash elements. Also, we don't know the lifetime sales of each God of War game, including physical and digital. There were 3 main entries, 1 spinoff, and multiple handheld games. If I had to guess I would say the original PS2 games were close to 10 million considering PS2 is the highest selling console of all time.
Never thought about Diablo as a hack and slash game but if you're factoring in that game, then that's easily higher up than God of war.
@davillain-:
Yeah I notice that with him, he'll make threads like this, I guess he sees not many people tend to agree with him and he'll never say anything else in his own thread lol.
I have God of War 1 & 2 on PS3 but I haven't played them yet. To my understanding, the general consensus seems to be a more casual experience that focuses on the fun factor of the on-screen action and scale with a no-nonsense protagonist on a mad revenge quest. It sounds like good fun!
I suppose it depends what you're after. For those looking for a deeper experience that they replay to master the mechanics and levels, I get the impression that Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry and Bayonetta are more commonly recommended. Having played Bayonetta 1 & 2, I would certainly recommend them.
To conclude, it depends on what the success is, right? Certainly, God of War is up there are one of the highest selling in the genre.
@ermacness I'm not sure the genre is really known for its impressive story-telling, is it? I always thought the appeal was game-play.
Devil May Cry is way better than God of War, the latter felt like a mindless hack 'n slash with really annoying spike and balancing levels.
@jumpaction:
Just because the genre isn't heavily focused on story doesn't mean that we should/can discount the story aspect. GOW may not have the gameplay of the other games in the same genre, however to me, it excels over most (if not all) of the other games in the same genre in: Vusuals, Presentation, and Story.
