Does Halo live up to the high standards of PC shooters or is Greg Kasavin totally wrong?

I really don't know. :?

I say yes, but pc fanboys would never agree. It's just a lot of fun and has high production values.

Is this because of the debate over at the PC board?:P

Considering it still has a fairly large MP community, yes.

Halo in 2003 for PC vs. other FPS's at the time? No, not even close. Also, Half-Life 2 released a year later and obliterated Halo in every sense with its gameplay.

A lot of people aren't too fond of Halo in the PC boards but the same can be said to the Sony and Nintendo boards.

Halo still managed to live up to PC standards by getting AAA when it was released for PC over two years later. :o

Hmm... Not really. Half-Life 2 is better than Halo, I'll give you that but Halo has better combat and WAY better A.I. than Half-Life 2. The gunplay was fairly generic and the A.I. was crap in Half-Life 2. Half-Life 1 was WAY better than HL2 anyway.

I have played a lot of shooters. Halo CE is right up there. Infact the original still looks very good on the xbox especially the textures and lighting.

Him and Joe Fielder were the best!

Even though I didn't always agree with them..... Silent Hill 2: 7.8 from Joe and Deus Ex: 8.2 from Greg.

It would've scored better if it wasn't a terrible port. Also, that Vista exclusivity was crap. It only used a single Vista feature in a single place, something having to do with better RAM partitioning I think. It was hacked anyway.

Reading the reviews, there were other things besides technical issues, for ex:- "The PC has more than its fair share of amazing shooters that blow Halo 2 away in every possible way, making this one best suited for Halo fans that want an easy way to play custom maps" which contributed to the 7.0 score

Yeah, it's fair to compare a 2004 console FPS to 2007, PC or Console FPS. In 2007 you had games like Crysis, it's successor in Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, BioShock that came out. Did you honestly expect it to hold up? There's not many games that you can release 3 years later and still have them get a 9 unless it's due to nostalgia. Especially when it's a new generation..

Probably... he gave Oblivion a 9.6/10 despite its blatant flaws.

It would've scored better if it wasn't a terrible port. Also, that Vista exclusivity was crap. It only used a single Vista feature in a single place, something having to do with better RAM partitioning I think. It was hacked anyway.

"Terrible ports" are never called the "definitive version" of a game. It had upgraded graphics (sharper textures, better AA, etc.), support for super-high resolutions (at the time) and had an updated and upgraded multiplayer. The best version of the game, underscored the original by 2.4 points. That just goes to show how quickly PC shooters move forwards.

But Halo 2 was no where near as good as Halo CE. :P

g805ge

Indeed. It was better.

It had a much better level variety and a change of pace with the Arbiter... which added narrative worth paying attention to.

If I asked for a gamercard it is not calling you out. I rarely call people out, but I also don't trust people on the Internet until shown proof that I can. And because the first two were does not mean the third will be, but it did take Halo CE many years to port, so it could still happen.

The level designswere better in Halo 2 and Arbiter is a great character no doubt, but Halo 2 and 3 seemed to lack the epic scope Halo CE has.

You shouldn't be so hard on the Master Chief, he's just a shell character with luck on his side.

Halo does live up pretty well. Halo 3 is still played online by many and it's almost 2 years old (I think). Plus the Halo series helped get a lot of things right for many console shooters after it.

How does faster translate to ease of use in an FPS, just curious? Slower means you have more time to react, making it easier for someone with slow reflexes/reaction time.

My sentiments exactly, at leat in Halo it takes some skill to play. Counter-Strike pwns both though.

I have it on PC (which, sadly, pushes my laptop to the limits) and its superior to the console version, I believe, because it looks a bit better, online multiplayer is still fun, and keyboard/mouse always works better with shooters. Maybe it didn't have co-op, but that was honestly ridiculous (how can there be TWO Master Chiefs?).

I really doubt my grandmother could possibly jump into Halo and get good at it. It even took me awhile. But for multiplayer, if everyone is good, wouldn't that mean everyone would own each other, further concluding it doesn't really matter? Yeah, Halo is slower, but it gives you more time to let things sink in, it doesn't require any less skill. I'd een go as far to say its way more "tactical" than fast-paced shooters like Unreal or Quake. Also, if everyone had an equal chance of getting good at something, wouldn't that be a good thing?

Halo has better combat and WAY better A.I. than Half-Life 2.

The Halo AI isn't even close to the HL2 AI. You can shoot people, run back to where you were before and they don't even follow. Not to mention unless they're Elites they won't even bother to melee you from 1 feet away and will shoot at you with their plasma pistols and miss. This is on Legendary difficulty by the way.

Dude...HL2 is one of the best and my most favorite games ever but the AI is absolute garbage. Worse than HL1 marine AI actually. It is just plain horrible.

Halo is like a gimped out Tribes. Tribes turns Halo on its head and gives it a good paddling if you want to talk about the type of sub-genre its in on the PC.Vandalvideo

^this.
+ 1 respect for Tribes comparison.

HL2's enemies are sitting ducks.

Halo has squad based AI, like Crysis and Far Cry. They have a leader and various "ranks". They have morale, know basic tactics like flanking and supressing. Sometimes they flee, only to regroup around the closest squad leader...

Halo CE was very good game, and it's still fun to play even now once in a while. Before it came out I never bothered to play console shooters, but it was just that damn good. The problem with the PC version was the lack of co-op, but it made up for it with the online and more vehicles. Only fanboys love to discredit it.
