HL2 is amazing, possibly the greatest of all time. I loved the Orange Box.

Aside from story-telling... it is pretty low on the list of all FPS's. Its shooting mechanics are lame, its pacing is all over the place, the story is very generic and derivative, and the level design (aside from Ravenholm) really doesn't change all that much (especially in terms of tone and atmosphere).
What makes it worth playing is the way it approaches story telling and messing around with the gravity gun... which honestly has better uses in Garry's Mod and Portal.foxhound_fox
i think this is the first time we agree on something:o

I don't think I've ever seen a single sentence that I disagree with more in my entire life.

This, to the nth degree. Makes me wonder if the people who are praising it as the second coming played the same game as I did, or if they have ever played a truly great shooter.Aside from story-telling... it is pretty low on the list of all FPS's. Have I really played the same Half life 2 as the rest of you?
I agree that the narrative (not story), physics, variety and atmosphere were truly great. In those aspects, Half life 2 was further than pretty much all other fps games. And weapons like the gravity gun were great.
But they forgot to do one thing: make the actual combat fun. In that department half life 2 is completely outclassed by games like Halo CE. Games with better AI, better gunplay and better vehicles. I just find it difficult to say this is the best first person shooterif the actual shooting is very average. The actual shooting part of a first person shooter should draw you to the game, not the side stuff. That's the reason gamespot gave half life 2 a 9.2, but halo 2 a 9.4. If Half life games got the same quality combat, AI and vehicles of halo games, THEN I would say it's the greatest fps of all time.

How was the gunplay lacking?
Half life2 is perhaps the most overrated game of all time.
Horrible gunplay (a pretty big minus in a fps game)
Largely linear and unimaginative levels (ill give ravenholme its due, that was definatley the only part i wasnt bored)
Highly average AI
Horrifically bad driving sections
Poor story (although well told, especially for its time)
The only things that justify the hype this game gets are the gravity gun (which is massively underutilised) and the atmosphere
The only reason it gets so much praise is because Valve fanboys are a large and particularly deluded group.
Sadly to many young kids here that haven't tried it yet.
*Not to mention played it when it was new.

When it came out I had already played Farcry earlier that year. That was a better shooter, had better overall graphics and actually tried something for the genre with it's huge levels, apparently open gameplay. HL2 is just a good game of the bunch that bunny hops over the first's merits and that is overrated by fanboys probably because of that.

They just jumped on the bandwagon so they feel they are part of something IMO.
I mean, HL2 is good, but it has many flaws andcertainly not the 2nd coming. As I stated before, I think the original HL is way better.

Yeah. The first one actually meant something for the genre. HL2 just takes advantage of that fame. It's good but not that good.
Nope. I actually think Halo games and some CoD games are better than Half Life and Half Life 2. Go on, you people can kill me. khoofia_pikaGet your flame shield out, you'll need it. Anyway, it's certainly up there. My list would also include the original Goldeneye 007, Wolfenstein 3D, Halo: Combat Evolved, Metroid Prime and Portal.

Well, at least you can kill things in MP, you can't even do that in Portal.

I'm shooting things (not necessarily 'living things' but things nonetheless) from a first person perspective. They fulfill all the criteria.

Tell that to the companion cube. :(
But yeah, Portal and Metroid Prime aren't FPS. I hate it how people always immediately claim something is an FPS when it takes place in first person perspective. You don't even shoot things in Portal. In MP you do, but the emphasis of the gameplay is on the puzzling and exploration, especially in the first 2 games.

Well hey, I generally hate FPS's. I'm literally grasping at straws here. Gimme a break :PHalf Life 2 is ok. i havent finished it yet because quite frankly, i didnt think it was all it was cracked up to be. I think the left for dead series and portal are by far and away the better Valve games.
Crysis, yes. Butcher Bay, lol no. khoofia_pika
Butcher Bay, 'lol' yes. Not only is it a much better game then HL2, due to the diversity in which you can play the actual game, it is also one of the most underrated games out there. My conclusion is based on my experience with both games.
Butcher Bay redefines what's possible with a 1st person shooter. It truly delivers a more intense and realistic First Person Shooter to the genre, a mix between stealth and FPS, with innovative mechanics and gameplay-styles, combos of first-person fighting that is unsurpassed 'till this day, by far. It manages to immerse you completely in the world of Butcher Bay, there has ben no game like this in the past, or to this day.
The only thing bad about the game is the mediocre shooting mechanics.
Wile HL2 was a straight-to-the-point shooter with mediocre shooting mechanics.
There should be no doubt in your mind on what is the better game here. Butcher Bay is by faaaar better then HL2 could ever hope to be.
[QUOTE="gamedude234"]You mean that game with the squeaky toy guns and the copy-paste level design? Yes. Imagine how much better the actual combat and AI are.hell no. HL2 is BAD. BAD gunplay, BAD AI, BAD story, BAD vehicles, BAD weapons.
Halo is far better.
dos4gw82
Seriously though, in terms of combat, AI and vehicles halo is miles better than HL2. There's nothing inherently wrong about how HL2 does the shooting thing, there's just also nothing inherently right with it. It has a few interesting weapons, but that doesn't make the combat worthy of "best fps ever". It's just that bungie went through a lot of effort to make the combat feel exactly right. Valve put all that time in narrative, physics, puzzles etc. and were apparantly content with combat and AI being "good enough".

[QUOTE="SHR3DD3D"]Not even close. It's way overrated by rabid Valve fanboys who can't accept the fact that Halo: Combat Evolved is the greatest first-person shooter ever, for several reasons. :/DraugenCP
This sentence is awfully ironic.
 Is that supposed to be a joke? I could name all the countless reasons why Halo trumps Half-Life, but it's already been done before--many times--so I won't even bother wasting my time. Please Log In to post.
