iam planning on building a gaming rig is it worth it and is the pc gaming still strong or no
This topic is locked from further discussion.
it still has it's strong user base and those people will always game on the PC
but now a days it's very hard for newcomers to choose the PC over consoles
veteran PC will always play PC, but newcomers are more likely to choose console
that's just how i see it
so no, it's not dying....it's just not growing
its still going strong. people have said it's "dying" for the longest time, and it continuously gets a bigger userbase.
We are getting ready to bury it
Nahh is doing great actually
Most AE AAE and AAE games this gen alone let the fact that is Backwards compatible up to the early 80's
and is the most profitable platform
Of course if you like platformers and Jrpg's better stick with consoles
PC Gaming is very strong and the older the consoles get, the stronger the PC's competitive edge will get.
At the end of the day it's more a matter of how you like to play your games. Controller on the coutch or Keyboard + mouse? If you're ok with Keyboard - Mouse the PC is the best gaming experience out there:
- Better overall graphics
- More diverse genres (Strategy games of diffrent froms and MMO's area especially strong on the PC)
- A lot more costumization possible. I some games this dosent matter, in others it will turn a good game into a mindblowingly awesome game (see Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout 3, STALKER, Half-Life2)
- Cheaper games. Most games cost $10 less than console games, that does add up over the years. In addition the PC seems to have a lot more game sales which will offer older but good games for very little.
- Strong indie games scene. When you get tired of the same old, dig into the indie scene for some really creative, surprising and innnovative games.
- Good hardware is cheaper than ever. You can buy graphic cards that will run every game on the market at a solid quality and speed for $100-$150
It's a good time to be a PC Gamer.

To be fair, the lack of diversity in genres is a negative about the PC.

Depends what you mean adventures because on PC adventure games are monkey island, The path , machinarium and that kind of games and they are in abundance on PC. Other than Platformers and Jrpg's pc has games in all genres plus some genres that are only on Pc like city building and simulation games[QUOTE="Yandere"]

The PC is strong with Sims, Strategy (besides Tactical RPGs), FPS/TPS, and WRPG (some niche genres)..
It lacks fighting, hack and slash, beat 'em up, Tactical RPGs, (a good amount of racing games), etc.. And even if it doesn't lack in a genre exclusive hungry consoles always get something the PC doesn't.

Good point about platforms, but adventure games is PC all the way. Both in terms of the dozens of classic PC games from Sierra and Lucas Art that still play well today. But the recent series of episodic adventure games like Sam and Max, Talkes from the Mokey Island and others. To be honest adventure games seems to be very rare on the consoles?

umm...have you NEVER played a nintendo console before? they're the kings of adventure games
sam and max and monkey island are adventurous, yes....but more like a point and click adventure....it keeps you on a strict where to go basis...it's not free roam adventure
a pure adventure game is something like shadow of the colossus, zelda, ICO...etc.

It's still strong and growing, it's just that consoles are growing faster. But with multiplats being so dominant I would say any system is a safe investment, none will run out of games right away. PC also has the widest exclusive catalogue, but people should realize that it's not all Crysis, exclusives with that kind of production values are expections these days.
If the platform with the most exclusives is dying; what does that say about the platforms that have to pay to keep hold of their exclusives?

I'm not sure how you define tactical RPG's. My notmal take would be an RPG with turn based combat or a turn base / slow deliberatly paces strategy game with a strong RPG (stats / level) element. Historically has quite a few games in that vein. On the flip side the consoles have almost no RTS's almost no turn based strategy games, no real world building / city building games, very few real trade simulation games, very few empire builders...
As for hack and slash I'm guessing we mean something different here. By hack and slash I'd normally think of action RPG's, kill, loot 'n level type games. Again this is one of the areas where the PC is VERY strong. And while the consoles do get exclusives, so does the PC, actually I belive that the PC get a good deal more exclusives than any of the consoles (though I could be wrong.. I don;t have a list on hand).

Yet, by your loose ruling I can call anything an adventure, be it FPS, RPG, RTS, Action etc, simply if i'm embarking on an "adventure".
Whilst yes, we can have cross genres, such as Zelda being a mix of platform and action/adventure, that's it, they are mixed genres.

every game has a story, every game has an adventure
adventure is branched off so many ways...it's hard to really know what to call it
and FPS is a shooter obviously....but at first nobody knew what to call metroid prime....at first it was an FPA...first person ADVENTURE
yea you shot like you did in games like halo, but there was a lot more exploration and not just shooting like in halo....which is why nintendo at first didn't think they should call it an FPS
adventure can be taken many ways...i put it in many different categories....just depends on how much adventure there really is to the story

it might not be your definition, but it's mine
either way...does it matter? PC offers nothing like those games either way, whatever the hell they are
As already said, I agree the PC has relatively few platformers. As for open worlds, exploring open sandbox areas and PC can more than hold it's own. Aside from Multi plat games like Oblivion and Fallout 3 you got other Bethesda (Especially Morrowind) but also games like STALKER and STALKER Clear Skies. While they are FPS games they also contain a very strong open world and exploration element. Almost all MMO's contain a strong open world element that encourages exploration and gradually unlocking more and more of the world. Heck by your definition GTA is an adventure game.[QUOTE="CDUB316"][QUOTE="Mazoch"] To be honest I'm not sure what you consider adventure game?! Ratchet and Clank? Donkey Kong? Banjo.. as far as I know those are platform games. Just what do you mean when you call something an adventure game?
Mazoch
adventure to me is something with a big and open world...something you go around and collect stuff to get to another area

and heck...even steam (or whatever that website was) classifies it as one....go to the first link that guy posted (was that you?) and go to top sellers or whatever
yep, GTAIV is there...under the adventure games
lmao, sounds like you guys are the ones who doesn't know what adventure really means

The adventure genre isn't classified by if they have a adventure or not, it's by the gameplay.. Like any genre.
