Wow, i can't believe people still argue about this.
Ok i will try to be as clear as possible. Having played through both games, I'll try to be as unbiased as possible. Both games are really good. I enjoyed both campaigns and I think these two, along with fallout, are the best games of the year. But there is one thing i notice here... from a technical point of view, GEARS 2 IS UNDERRATED.
Why is this? People actually forget the little details this game has to offer. These little details actually require a lot of raw proccessing power and calculus. There are many things i analyzed during both games. Yes, Resistance 2 has a lot of enemies on screen, and 60 player multiplayer..but that's about it. Thetextures are muddy and the lighting is not very dynamic; this though is conpensated by the amount of detail and the marvelous artstyle. But gears 2 is more than just 12 locust and a meathead on screen. Gears 2 features a lot of dynamic ... features. The lighting affects every single polygon of the texture's and model's bump mapping;this though, is not really noticeable unless you look hard..but it''s there. Now lighting has been done before, but here i got some things that havent. Dynamic water, blood physics allows for realistic water movement and liquids are affected by wind and tiny reactions; This makes waves in the water that collide with eachother and display the reflection (which is good) in a realistic fashion. Then we have the destructible enviroments and dismemberment, you can now destruct `pilars and cover that then produces a realistic destruction (again, more calculus) and physics for every individual piece of wall. This also aplies to every character member and INTERIOR ORGANS, which sometimes go off the body..so you can have 12 enemies on screen with AI, but also 45 pieces of locust each with it's individual physics (this shows alot in horde). Now, the enemy AI is better in Resistance 2. In resistance 2 they run and take cover, and do challenging tactics. This is multiplied by the fact that it can handle up to 20-25 enemies on screen. In gears 2 horde technology allows for up to 15 (or atleast that's the highest amopunt ive seen) enemies on screen. The particle effects in both are outstanding, and both have great textures but the edge gos to gears 2 with it's high res txtureso n buildings even far away in the background. Also, both games run pretty smooth, which is an achievement for both consoles, but, here it comes, specially...Gears 2.
Now, after playing both, i can say resistance 2 just feels more 'static'. Sure , it has a lot more enemies on screen with individual AI, but a lot of processing power is needed for all the tiny details on Gears of War, a lot of tiny details that not many people seem to realise that even exist.
man i hope this wall o' text is noticed by someone :P. If yo read it all you win a free internetz :)
