Thought I would try and stray away from all the U2 and ODST threads and do something different.

Anyway, some pretty big discussions go around the board on if Brawl is a fighter or not...Yes I know it is ridiculous. People go as far as to make up random genres like, Party Fighter. I thought it was a simply a fighter just because you choose characters and you know what you do after that? You fight. Then people say thing like, It doesn't play like a normal fighter, You use Items (may i add you use those items to fight with), yada yada yada. What do you think.

Is SSBB a fighting game!

It's a fighting game. One that I enjoy and find much less frustrating then traditional fighting games, mind you.

Brawls is one of those things that put into different catagories because some people cannot rationally argue it to not be a fighter, but can't stand it to be a fighter, so give it a sub genre as if that somehow makes it not a fighter. It happens to all kinds of media. Are comic books books? Are CGI movies really movies? It goes the other way too. Have you ever seen someone argue that a videogame is more than just a videogame?

It's a fighting game. It just doesn't involve button combos and health meters. Nintendo seems to have a thing with making stuff where the genre is difficult to figure out. Like Metroid. Is it a shooter? A platformer? And adventure game? All of them?

Its part of the hate bandwagon. The only people who can really complain about Brawl are the people who play competitively. Tripping, slowing of movement. and no wavedashing other tech's arnt in the game. Big woop.

xYamatox

Yes. The party fighter thing is just a division to dignify the difference between games. To me, you can't compare SSB to SF even if it's just a fighting game. You may think it's kind of stupid but I actually agree with it. The gameplay types just don't seem similar at all.

It is a fighter though.

PS: I'm impressed with the Power Stone refrence. I don't think that game has enough recognition...

Its a fighter. Abiet a unconventional and extremely accessable one.

At my college I play for fun with Tournament league players. I get murdered EVERY time. I can't survive more than 30 seconds against them.

Yes, and its the best one out there. Most fighters suffer from a system thats too complex and extremely intimdating towards new-comers (*cough* SF4 *cough*), Brawl has a simple combat system that also requires a lot of strategy, and its pretty damn balanced too, as well as a ton of content. Just because you and your friends can have a lot of fun with it at a party doesn't make it a party game.

In the sense of Virtua Fighter 5? Not in the least. Its half way between a full-fledged fighter (VF, SF, MVC2, etc) and zany brawler (like Powerstone). Its neither and both at the same time, doing neither especially well and getting all muddled up in the process.

Its not a traditional fighter, but its a fighter nontheless as you still go around beating all up players until either a timer runs out, they run out of lives, etc. Which imo sounds very much still like a fighter as the main point of the game is to fight other players and beat them.

I never understood how traditional is a Hoduken lol. If we talk about realism then no Beat'Em up is realistic so people cannot use that route of saying "SSBB isnt a beat'em up* as that means every beat'em falls in the same catergory.

and how does it suck compared to melee if it was basically the same game with WAAAAAAYY more characters/stages/items/content?

I :( at your opinion

Oh boy where do I even start. While essentially, Brawl and Melee have the same concept, there are several crucial differences that lead many Melee veterans to hate Brawl. For one, the speed of Brawl is ridiculously slow if you compare it to melee. Another aspect of Brawl that many people do not enjoy is the lack of combo potential. In Melee, spacing is essential to staying alive because one mistake, coupled with poor DI, is pretty much the end of a stock. Brawl is more hit and run in this aspect because if you make a mistake, often you get hit once and go back to spacing around. One extremely controversial thing that Brawl took out is many Advance Techniques. Things such as wavedashing, L-canceling, and others were cut from Brawl because Sakurai wanted the game to be more accessible to people. Many people took this as dumbing the game down and some even go as far as saying "Brawl takes no skill" While it certainly does take a lot less tech skill than Melee, it does have some skill involve. I mean you just can't get any player to play against M2k and beat him but at some lower levels of play, a person spamming the b button with Meta Knight could actually yield some fruitful results. Many people could disregards this as a good thing and just shake these techniques off as "Glitches." This is somewhat an unfair stance on them imo because Lcancelling was actually intended for the game, since it originated from the smash64 game. I heard somewhere that wavedashing was intended but I'm not sure on that one. Either way, who cares if they were intended or not since it gives every character a boost and overall makes the game more fun? All tournament players use these techniques extensively and don't break the game. Brawl even has its fair share of glitches too. The one that stands out on top of my head right now would be "Snakedashing." Another extremely controversial thing that Brawl has is their character roster. It is extremely unbalanced. Meta Knight currently rules this tier list with an iron fist and has no bad match ups against any other character. Falling closely behind is Snake. These two characters pretty much dominate the tournament scene. If I recall corectly, Genesis (Probably the largest Brawl tourney held this year) had results that looked something like Snake, Meta Knight, Meta Knight, Meta Knight, Meta Knight as their top 5, in that order. As for stages, tournament players just try to eliminate the unbalanced stages or stages with conditions that make it unfair for players to play in. After all this is done, Melee actually has more neutral stages than Brawl. Of course, this entire post only applies for people who like to play seriously. For those who just play Brawl casually, they would probably like Brawl more since it's more accessible, has more stages/characters, is more random, won't mind the character imbalance, and overall more content. As for the actual thread, of course it is a fighting game. It's not as respectable as Melee for a fighting game, that's for sure but it still is a fighter. You just have to develop a set of rules to abide by.

*comes out of hiding for Brawl thread*

I'm glad the poll shows that SW has a lot more common sense than these threads usually suggest. :)

Another extremely controversial thing that Brawl has is their character roster. It is extremely unbalanced. Meta Knight currently rules this tier list with an iron fist and has no bad match ups against any other character. Falling closely behind is Snake. These two characters pretty much dominate the tournament scene. If I recall corectly, Genesis (Probably the largest Brawl tourney held this year) had results that looked something like Snake, Meta Knight, Meta Knight, Meta Knight, Meta Knight as their top 5, in that order.commonercoffee

Personally, I don't believe this whatsoever (the unbalanced part, not the tourney results, which I completely believe), and I blame the tournament players for the oversaturation. They saw Meta Knight, squealed with glee over his speed and priority, and flocked to him in droves, evolving his metagame way past every other character in the process. After that, why would you take a chance on any other character when you have this already-developed character right there?

I believe Meta Knight is on his way down to Earth in the tier list. Other characters are catching up, and more and more even and potentially positive matchups against MK will be found. One thing Brawl has going for it with regards to character balance is that the mid-tier and lower tiers can compete with the top tiersfar more than in Melee. That, and the game is still evolving. In my opinion, Toon Link will eventually take over the top tier, Snake will plummet, and ROB is awesome. (Wait, that's a fact. :P)

Of course there will be exceptions and tiers really only come into account at the highest level of play
