I'm just taking a quick little poll. I personally have always found the XBOX franchise far superior online/multiplayer to other consoles with games like Gears of War and Halo mainly, both of which I've spent a ridiculous amount of time on with tens of thousands of kills... But this is just my personal opinion on the topic. What do you guys think? All input is appreciated. :D

Damnit i clicked the poll before i read your post, it is the best in console online gaming. With time PSN might shape up, too early to tell.

For consoles, yes. With the unified friend's list, messaging, and private chat, it's really easy to play with your friends.

Pretty much. Nintendo's is functioning but restrictive, and Sony can barely get their's to function.

PC will always have the edge on consoles for their ability to upgrade with the times. XBOX LIVE is the most unified online service though and works wonders. If I could wish for one thing though it would be more dedicated servers... *cough*cough*Gears of War*cough*...

"bu bu you need a $3000 computer to play online" I personally think Live made it much easier to play games with your friends over highspeed connections. In my opinion, for gaming in general, PCs have way to many variables.

I'd actually take the 360 over the PC for multiplayer, although that may be because of my bad experiences with PC multiplayer gaming circa 2001, where you had to have a different account for seemingly every game. I still have nightmares about the bunch of sticky notes I had that I think had 14 or 15 different accounts and passwords on them.

Way too many misconceptions... hopefully that was a sarcastic remark about the cost of the PC.

Purchase a PC. Go to steampowered.com, download Steam. Buy a game, download game (or register key with Steam). Play game online with hundreds of thousands of people on completely dedicated servers with extremely low tick rates.

PC online will always be superior to console online. Dedicated servers, xfire/Steam, mods and free online gaming are the main factors. I fail to see all these "variables" you speak of.

With the coming of Vista and Windows Live Anywhere, PC gaming (online and off) is going to get insanely simpler.

I am half hermit half lemming. Lemming for live and Halo. Hermit for RTS'es and occasional shooter. Personaly after playing live and talking to people and having an awsome time I can never go back to playing any online pc game. Every one cheats, Team killing is a real problem, no one has got a mic, every one treats each other bad and krap like that. Though PC gaming has got lots of Mods and stuff like that that is cool but it just cant hold a candle to live in my opinion

Don't forget the monitor. That's another $200. You can't just hook it up to your TV like you can a console.

Most people can't build their own computer, so you're better off doing a comparison with pricing from Dell or HP. Suddenly that $600 PS3 is looking a lot cheaper.

Anyone can buy a PC and cross their fingers in hopes of it running the game as it was meant to. If not then your stuck with the job of hunting for Drivers, patches or upgrading your PC. You'd better hope your PC doesnt have a virus, trojans, adware, spyware all those things that can make a PC stutter. With Live I can EFFORTLESSLY sign in, pop in my DVD, in which I dont have to unzip onto my hard, and play. All that without effort or worries of something going wrong outside of my console. Its easier imho, always has been.

Yes, you can just hook it up to your TV like a console...

Also..

PC gamers buy 25 games @$50=$1250

360/PS3 gamers buy 25 games @$60=$1500

Xbox Live@$50=$200 over 4 years

Xbox 360 is $400

PS3 is $600

A PC is $818

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E4300 1.8GHz 800MHz 2MB LGA775 CPU, OEM - $104.55

BIOSTAR TForce965PT LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - $51.99
SUPER TALENT 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory - x2 - $77.26 (This is 2gb if you people cant understand)
PNY XLR8 GeForce 8800GTS 320MB PCI Express x16 Video Card - $214.99
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Fan For Intel CPU - $19.50
Antec TruePowerTrio 550W Power Supply - $64.99
CHENMING CMUI-601AEB-W Black 1.0mm SECC Server Computer Case - $50.99

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6L250R0 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache-$59.99

LITE-ON Black IDE DVD Burner-$29.99

Windows Vista Home Premium-$111.99

Mouse and Keyboard of your liking-$60

Total for 360 is Xbox Live (4 years) $200 + Games (25 games) $1500 + Xbox 360 $400 = $2100

Total for PS3 Games (25 games) $1500 + PS3 $600 = $2100

Total for PC is Games (25 games) $1250 + PC $818 = $2068

Ok, Xfire is the PC equivlant to Live for consoles and is as good. Still does'nt change my opinion on the variables statement for general gaming.

Buy a anti-virus/spyware program and stop using Internet Explorer... it is not that hard to avoid viruses/spyware/etc...

Once you install a game to your harddrive all you have to do is pop in the disc and click the start icon...

A console is easier for someone who does not have the patience to click next a few times and make sure their PC is running properly.

I have had way more nasty experiences on XBL than I ever have on the PC. Too many immature kids. In my experience, the PC has a much broader player base, usually older.  It's funny, the editors at 1up, IGN, and a whole host of other sites speak of this as well.

Overall though, as far as consoles goes, MS did a great job. And also don't forget, this month, Live comes to the PC as well, but I like Xfire for my PC gaming hands down. Xfire's been doing what XBL does for years.

Wow, that's nothing. Installing a game is painless in my eyes. Plus, I would rather have it running on my Raid 0 Sata 150 hdd's.

I spent more energy going to the bathroom.

Exactly, further backing my claims as to why PC gaming/online play is a bit more complex than console gaming/online play. Just look at the user base, mindless immature kids on live. Tech savvy older adults on PC/Xfire etc..

You're probably saying that just because PC only gamers constantly that they have the best online experience.

It's really quite different and you can't compare the two due to different ups and downs.

For example, on most PC games, if you want to have regular, in game voice chat you need to (1) join a clan - and finding a clan perfect for you is hard since they always want you to spend your life on the game... (2) get a seperate voice chat program, run it behind the game, and join the clan's server.

I'd say that PC online has more capability, but lacks the easy to use, connected system that XBL is (although XBL voice quality is subpar).  The biggest advantage of XBL in my eyes is that everybody uses the exact same online system. When a quality online title like Halo2 is being played a lot, you really care if you win or lose, because the stats and everything are right there, in game.

But I've never played a game that feels as right online as Halo2. Halo3 is going surpass any PC game around in terms of accessible and fun multiplayer.

No, you just install Xfire and chat away!! It's not that complicated!! I use it with my buddies all the time.

I've had Xfire for years but I haven't logged in for over a year. Xfire is highly overrated; it's nothing like XBL. anybody who plays both console and PC games online can understand that PC online gaming doesn't feel nearly as connected as playing a good game on XBL.

Does Xfire give you a list of players in your current game, players you played recently, and their statistics? no way. it just serves as a text chat program that tells you what friends are playing.

Lag free Gameplay wise no, Mircosoft uses P2P Networking, which is kinda wierd considering the fact that were paying for XBL, but i do prefer the features that XBL comes with (Chat, Friends list). But in time I belive the PSN network will catch up.

So Atm i will give it to XBL.

Definately. Although I like the 4 player games that Nintendo offers like Mario Kart, Smash, Mario Golf, Tennis ect. Online multiplayer is the biggest advantage the xbox has over its competitiors.

You're probably saying that just because PC only gamers constantly that they have the best online experience.

It's really quite different and you can't compare the two due to different ups and downs.

For example, on most PC games, if you want to have voice chat you need to 1) join a clan - and finding a clan perfect for you is hard since they always want you to spend your life on the game... 2) get ventrillo, a seperate program, run it, and join the clan's server.

I'd say that PC online has more capability, but lacks the easy to use, connected system that XBL is (although XBL voice quality is subpar).

Does Xfire give you a list of players in your current game, players you played recently, and their statistics? no way. it just serves as a text chat program that tells you what friends are playing.

you have obviously not used X-Fire for a while...it does everything you mentioned....

I'd actually take the 360 over the PC for multiplayer, although that may be because of my bad experiences with PC multiplayer gaming circa 2001, where you had to have a different account for seemingly every game. I still have nightmares about the bunch of sticky notes I had that I think had 14 or 15 different accounts and passwords on them.

mismajor99

I have had way more nasty experiences on XBL than I ever have on the PC. Too many immature kids. In my experience, the PC has a much broader player base, usually older. It's funny, the editors at 1up, IGN, and a whole host of other sites speak of this as well.

Overall though, as far as consoles goes, MS did a great job. And also don't forget, this month, Live comes to the PC as well, but I like Xfire for my PC gaming hands down. Xfire's been doing what XBL does for years.

The only reason you know about all those immature kids on XBL is because of the standard voice chat, something that is completely missing in PCs.

If everybody who played PC games had a mic and a user-friendly voice-chat infrastructure, things might be a bit different.

I use a mic all the time, and there are tons of people that do, at least in my experience. To be honest, voice chat's a bit overrated. I like it for CSS, BF2, HL2 Mods. I put people on mute all the time on XBL as some people think they can sing.

BTW, the PC had voice chat long before XBL. And I like the fact that just about every muliplayer game has a built-in system, making it even easier to chat. Otherwise, I usually like to use Xfire on the PC. If you uses it all the time, you would understand, as I use both Xfire and XBL.

Unequivocally yes.  It was a PC compnay and knew what PC online gaming was about.  Introduced (or should I say mainstreamed it after the Dreamcast) to consoles and has continued to improve on it

Exactly, further backing my claims as to why PC gaming/online play is a bit more complex than console gaming/online play. Just look at the user base, mindless immature kids on live. Tech savvy older adults on PC/Xfire etc..

Way to try to turn a negative to a positive....

LMAO! I was'nt bashing PC games/online play or am I bashing Console online play or its users, there is an abundance of immature kids on live though, especially Gears Of War.. This is why Bungie spearheaded the idea of the "Shut the hell up" but in Halo 3 online.

I really like using the mic on XBL. There was a time when I couldn't get it working right, and it felt like half an experience. Having standard voice chat is great, even when there are a few dumb people out there too.

I really couldn't be botherd speaking to the other users during team games and i usually just mute mic recieve volume anyway, i preffer typed abuse than verbal.

Plus it doesn't matter if your online on Xbox live, you can get all its services free on the net anyway. I think its arrogant Microsoft went with subscriptions, considering we don't pay for the MSN network.

[QUOTE="TrailorParkBoy"]I am half hermit half lemming. Though PC gaming has got lots of Mods and stuff like that that is cool but it just cant hold a candle to live in my opinioncobrax75

Right....because XBL certainly doesnt have hackers, team killers, and everyone is certainly nice and warm to each other....

/sarcasm....

that is actually pretty close. I mean of course you got your dicks on live but every one is fairly nice to each other.

actually there are alot of freakin kids on PC games too, you jus have a headset which you have to hear them all the time on XBL, thats the main difference with annoying players.

I suppose your XBL experience depends on when you play and who you play with. 90% of the time I'm either on late (since I really only after school or work) and/or with friends, so I don't get much of the 13 year old thing. Plus I mostly play R6:Vegas, which is pretty much the anti-13 year old XBL game. I'm sure Xfire is a great product but for sheer simplicities sake its hard to go wrong with XBL.

Console wise by far. It was last gen and so far blows away the other 2 this gen. PC is so far ahead that if you included it, it would be no contest.

Yes, when it comes to consoles. But overall it is not that good compared to PC
