Its been happening for years, its just people are too lazy to learn a new OS. You have Red Hat, Ubuntu, and Mac OS. All of those are leaps and bounds better than Windows.Vasichko
its not that they are too lazy its because microsoft actually offers an easy to use interface that people have been used to for many many years. Mac Os will catch up in time if enough peoplegive it a try. I use Linux and its by far the best os ive used but it takes awhile to get used to it and I doubt alot of people will want to learn CLI commands instead of just point and clicking a GUI

remember that simpson episode when homer invented something and bill gates destroyed it because it was a threat. i see MS buying anything that hit their radar as a threat
is there a company rich enough to challege ms' OS business. I want to see competitive business in this area and i want someone like an oil company challenge them. i would love to see that company compete not with innovation because that doesnt work, but compete with money. Ms is not good with competition, but they have money and thats how they succeed.virtuas
great point.
i want to see samsung enter the OS and gaming business. They are good at what they do.

Then why has Linux been around for decades?

yeah tc makes my head hurt
i think in the future there will be no OS, everything will be online ParadiddleFill
Uh thats still going to require an OS unless you want to go back to the 70's when you had mainframes and terminals. Anyway based on recent rumors MS is ahead of the curve on that one.

by the way what do you mean by that?
Im probably wrong but more and more people are switching over to other operating systems as time goes on, MAC OSX and Linux are probably alot more popular now than they where 5 years ago.ONLYDOD
If by alot, you mean a little bit, yes you are correct.
Not possible due to corporate laws.
MS cant buy out everything in site even if they could.
MS is rich because they stole from other companies and created corporate contracts to use these things back in the day.
DOS would be nothing if it weren't updated with thing that it stole from Unix.

Its not MS's fault that IBM made a bone-headed business decision, and if it weren't for MS, Apple would probably not be around anymore.
I think with the attention Apple is getting with OS X being it is on the iMac,iBook, and Powerbook. OS X may be able to give MS a run, but Apple has a tight grip when it comes to outside parties using their OS. MS isn't bad they just skip out on quality control it seems and 98, XP, and Vista are perfect examples, but they are pretty good with updates and fixes. I guess a company would be after having so much experience with damage control and bug fixes.
The only competitor I see is Apple.
What Apple is doing is on massive scale, but rolling it out on small levels to the average consumer. They started with the iPOD. Almost everyone has one and that indirectly is causing marketing buzz for other products such as their MAC computers. Now they introduce the iPHONE and everyone goes nuts over it. Again, creating a huge marketing buzz for Apple's other products.
Apple's commercials are simple, funny, and easy to understand.
For the past 2 years or so, more people are switching to Apple computers. Just go to coffee shops, airports, etc. and you will see the trend.
Eventually Apple will take market shares bit by bit from MS by targeting the average user. Once there is a huge enough user base, then Apple will take over the business world and that is where all the money is.
It will take time, but I think Apple will put a dent in MS, but I don't know if it will take over the OS business yet and at anytime soon.

I really doubt Apple wants to take over the OS biz from MS. I am pretty positive being more niche works in Apple's favor.

Indeed. Apple wans profit, not marketshare. If they wanted marketshare, they'd be selling an OS that could work on any PC. If they wanted business, they'd be offering business tools that a worth damn. To get business they'd also need to offer a viable migration path for the custom LOB software that businesses use (you'd be surprised how much mission-critical software was written for 16-bit Windows...and still runs on XP and Vista).Teufelhuhn
Not only that, then they would lose the hipster appeal that does follow Apple. People are buying the brand name now, kinda like Starbucks.
If it were to become the mainstream norm, it would lose some of its appeal to its heavy users and defenders, and would also be much more high profile for attacks and malware, which Apple has generally been shielded from by Windows taking the brunt.
No. Linux is the only potential competititor thanks to it being free, everything else would get demolished by MS.
OS market relyes too much on tradition. Companies buy windows because their employees know how to use it, employees know how to use it because everyone has one at home, everyone has one at home because it's the platform that is most compatible with all the games and programs, and it's the most compatible platform because it's the most popular.
I wish governments would use Linux instead of Windows. Would save our tax money. I also hope that governments or other organisations would hand out Ubuntu or openSUSE or some other Linux distribution to the poorer folk so that they can benefit from computers as well without having to spend money on software.Hexagon_777
There is absolutely no way that the Government could use Linux.
Microsoft is the owner of DirectX; which the majority of today's computer games use, at least for their graphics.
As long as this is the case Microsoft will 'own' PC gaming, most likely they wouldn't license DirectX to other operating systems even if they were willing to pay.

You are right they are good at doing what they do and they should stay that way. The bottom line is as a Network Administrator I would prefer it to be one OS the way it is on the market, I don't mind on my own time researching and learning new things, but to have to deal with muliple OS's on a network or have to be forced to learn them for any future jobs is a pain staking task. Windows is very easy to use that a lot of people are familar with. To have another OS come along would just simply complicate things.

Do you have any idea of what securty risks that would bring to our nation if they decided to switch over to an open source software?

I work in a government lab as a lower level tech support internship. Given the massive amounts of user error and issues with fairly simple XP programs/settings, I would hate to see the massive failures that would accompany Linux, which is quite a bit less user friendly.
mac is great but no one gives it a try. and everyone hates apple because they overprice their hardware. overall for school i would take a mac laptop over any other. but obviously i would want a desktop if i wanted true gaming.
and the guy who said it will all be online. what if this happens http://ipower.ning.com/netneutrality2

:? Do you even know what is OS?
yeah i know what an os its a sotfware based host that is used to manage and open programs, the point im making if you know the way networking is heading you can easily see that in the next 20 years os are going to be obsolete, all your programs are going to be run online and managed within an online infastructure, its already being seen today

Ya but they don't sit there by themselves, you still need a server to run those online applications. How do you think these devices are going to be able to communicate?

Ok so you can delete windows and do all of that through your BIOS, I'll keep my OS, thanks.

That is what pc needs another large company to enter the pc game market. If I was ceo of sony or another large comapnay I would so be making OS and put microsoft out of business!!!blackdreamhunk
Yes, because the other OS's in the market are sure dancing on MS's grave....

you cant have have network managment through bios you need an os, in the future when that future why would you need an os if all of you program capabilities including management are streamlined online?
