Or have JRPG's been more non-traditional in the past couple of years.
Like FF12 which uses a western battle gameplay.
Because Blue Dragon ( way too traditonal and it FLOP Badly.)

pokemon diamon and pearl, so many freaking dragonquest.
no the formula is not dead, traditional jrpgs will keep coming out. And every time they do it will get a very low score. Personally blue dragon to me should have gotten a 8.5 its a great game. A 6.0 imo means its unplayable, got glitches things like that, thats not the case its just old-school.
people who like the gener just need to look at japan websites who rate the games based on their love of the gener. They should stop expecting western sites like Ign, Gamespot to rate them highly. Its the same with shooters in japan they arent well liked.

the western formula is even older and really sucks imo.... Persona 3 uses turned based combat and its great and its actually a challenge unlike the steaming pile called oblivion.

kinda, but its gotten worse lately. Because FF12 was seen as "breath of fresh air" now every jrpg basically has to copy that system to be taken seriously by a western reviewer. Its kinda sad really since a lot of people like the old traditional system.
i think theres still hope for turnbased rpg's. a lot of reviewers complaints for blue dragon wasnt necessarily that it was traditional, but it was traditional done bad. the story and characters were forgetable. it could have gotten atleast AA if both of those elements were good.
plus i think there are some "next gen" elements that could possibly be added to the turnbased system. seemless transition between the field and the battle screen would be something off the top of my head that would be a good improvement.

Eternal Sonata seemed turn based when I played it....im under the imprression that the battles are hack and slash but for set time periods. i guess it really depends what you call turn-based.

DQ9 has been confirmed to be turn-based.
Oblivion's combat sucks because the leveling/scalable enemiessuck. Turn based still has a place, but its pretty much a given that good real time combat is going to be better than good turn based combat. I mean what would you rather do, actually control your character's every action, or select an ability and hope to god those invisible dice rolls go your way?the western formula is even older and really sucks imo.... No. Traditional turn based JRPGS need to die. Period. There is no place for that kind of gameplay in modern gaming.

true, but you have a set period of time that you hack and slash each other in bladestorm and i doubt anyone would call that turnbased. i was just thinking traditional turnbased gameplay like bd and ffx.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe some of us like traditional turn based games and thought the direction that ff12 took blew? To me FFX2 had the greatest battle system of all the ff's, knock the story if you want but its battle system to me was flawless.
There should always be a place for these types of games, if you don't like it then don't play em.

That's highly debatable. I think that games such as Blue Dragon are holding back RPG's as a whole, and I applaud the efforts that Square Enix is making with the FF battle system, even if we haven't seen the full fruits of that labor yet.
I love SRPG and there far more tedious then traditional turn based rpgs, sure its a niche market for such games but that market is still very large and that probably won't change anytime soon. You have to remember japanese gamers have very different taste of games compared to both NA and EU, they like there games and like them alot.
So a simple answer to the question is: Yes theres still a place for traditional turn based rpgs.

Really? From the videos it look like real time combat.
i do believe the genre is dead.. at least it is on the next gen consoles and the pc there it will never (i think) have a precense ever again and if it does the game will be rated bad.
however (every cloud has a silver lining) i do think that the handheld market is still open to turn based jrpg's mainly because the limited space means that its easier to make this type of game compared to say an fps.

Yeah, it was confirmed a few months ago. I can't remember where it was, or elseI would give you a link to it.
turn based RPGs are not dead, a lot of Japanese developers didn't show us anything yet and Im sure they are working for RPGs, wait for konami for example for the next Suikoden or wait for the next Wild arms( I know there is one now and Im gonna buy it but Im talking about next-gen consoles), there will be FF7: Crisis core, so don't worry, a lot of traditional RPGs will be coming but we have to wait, Im sure of that, Japanese Devs. exists, JRPGs Exists.
I want World maps on RPGs more than the combat system though, I miss the classic RPGs with all of their great world maps.
Oblivion's combat sucks because the leveling/scalable enemiessuck. Thats a very arguable position you have, realtime has its place but so does turn-based. The advantage of turn-based games are more elaborate systems as often purely real-time combat systems are NOT very elaborate.
You might prefer simplicity I don't know and I've enjoyed some real-time systems but they are more shallow and when I want a really unique experience I feel that turn-based through the additional depth that the lack of a clock allows gives that.
Basically you are oversimplifying matters here, its not some "invisible dice" theres stats to consider in turn-based RPGs but there are as well in real-time. Turn-based is about strategic considerations and a good turn-based system will have different choices for each different situation and/or more elaborate combinations of abilities that are stronger than the sum of their parts.
Its because of this that turn-based RPGs can have enemies that in a real-time system would be considered broken and/or nearly unwinnable.Yeah, there is, but since there's not much else that can be done with turn-based RPG games, there needs to be a better emphasis on the story, because this whole "little orphan amnesiac hero whose home village was burned down" crap is extremely stale.Smoke_ManMuscle
Theres a ton still that can be done with turn-based, sure theres a ton of different systems out there but if anything games like Shadow Hearts should prove that you can still make some original design choices, even if they seem minor on paper they can alter the experience a ton.
Agreed with the story though, Gurumin was a breath of fresh air not because it had a good real-time system (it was actually pretty shallow) instead of turn-based, it was because it took a different road than most titles.
Or have JRPG's been more non-traditional in the past couple of years.

FF12 is pretty much old formula evolved. It is practically ATB system with more interactive enviroment and enemies, which is why I love it.
Turn based gameplay is still more than well in place. Persona 3 has been recently released and it is practically normal turn based combat system that works very well. There are plenty of place for turn based combat system JRPGs.
It isn't the turn based combat that is the problem, Blue Dragon actually was praised with it's combat system even though it is turn based combat. It failed because of story, pacing, (two back-bone of JRPGs) and technical problems like slow down.
I really hope hope SE strays from the western style of FFXII and go back to turn based combat /w some kind of new twist or add-on. FFXII's combat system was shallow and dull at times. I mean, the characters didn't even have freakin jobs!!!!!!!!!!!!!! majadamus
FFXII combat system was not shallow. It was very much traditional Final Fantasy combat system. There really isn't huge difference between ATB system and ADB system. All they did was reverse the order. Instead of waiting to choose your move, you choose your move and wait for characters to perform it.
What was shallow was quickenings and license board. If Final Fantasy XII simply had materia system or Job system, people would've loved it to death.
and perhaps take away Gambit system for people who ***** about it saying it makes the game easier and how it makes them not play the game because it makes everything automatic, even though gambat system is optional thing.
