New Super Mario Bros. U

Trine 2

Rayman Legends

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze

New Super Luigi U

Super Mario 3D World

Sonic Lost World

Yoshi Wii U

It looks like the Wii U is getting the best next generation platformers, from both first parties and third parties. Whereas it might be strugging in other genres, it looks like platformers, 2D and 3D, is one area where the Wii U is the console to beat. What do you think?

I think that platformers as a genre have lost much of their appeal. They were nice when I was a kid, but most lack the depth and story that I'm looking for in games nowadays...

Then it's about time you buy one already will ya?

Oh and if we see a Banjo Threeie on The One, it's game over man, game over. :P

Seriously, you've got a pretty good point for Wii U, platformer fans.

May get round to playing it today as cant move far with having my ankle popped on monday. It looks a fun game i must say and for £7 i cannot grumble. I've got bit of a backlog of platformers on my VC by buying all the 30p games and several others.

Checked and have to play Trine 2, Kirby Adventure, Kirby Super adventure, Donkey Kong, Super Metroid... Eee

Ever heard/played a game called Braid? If you're looking for good platformer stories (which is weird for the platform genre but I digress) then try that one out; its' pretty good.

Next Generation platformer king?

Got to cling to something I suppose. Considering other next gen platforms have barely announced any "platformers" at all, yeah i guess we can give that one to you. Of course we are already "giving you" that the Wii-U is a next gen platform at all... that may be the biggest stretch. :P

360 and PS3 had better platform games. They were called arcade games. Super Meat Boy, Trine 2, Limbo, Fez, Braid, and S'plosion Man for example.  not to mention Rayman Origins, Ratchet and Clank, Banjo, Rayman Legends.

The PS4 and XB1 will get better platformers as well...........they will be called arcade games also. It would be incredibly hard for me to buy a Mario game, especially a 2-D Mario game for $60 when the PS4 or XB1 has something fresher, that looks better, and more unique for $15.

Trine 2 directors cut is on the WiiU. It cost me £7 also, usual price i think is £12.

1. None of those are new IPs, half of them are rehashes.

2. Trine 2 has been out on consoles and PC for what, a year now?

3. The hundreds of indie platformers being made mostly for PC have better gimmicks.

OK. My point still stands. It is 6 in the morning. I am sure I could go look on XBLA and find 5 more games rated 85 or above on metacritc but I think I already proved my point. The Wii U has good platformers at retail price. But the 360 and PS3 has more good platformers with more variety for a lot cheaper. Battleblock Theater on 460 for example is a massive game with great platforming and a ton more variety than any of the Wii U titles he has listed. Legends and DKC are the only ones on the Wii U I am interested in. But Legends will be on the 360 and I can get 4 or 5 platformers on XBLA that will be as good as DKC. I realize this is all based on opinion but the fact is Braid and Fez are unique. Winterbottom is unique. I have played DKC 4 or 5 times before.

Yes, IMO the best platformer this year will be Donkey Kong: Tropical Breeze. David Wise, No waggle, no blowing, Dixie, HD, even more creativity, better enemies etc etc.

$20 is a fair price for Luigi.. It gives you a ton of content. But you have played that same game for 25 years. Nothing has changed. I would suggest getting Battleblock Theater for $5 cheaper. It has a better art style and more variety. It is also funny as Hell.

Yeah it definitely is right now considering the other two next gen consoles haven't even shown a single platformer on the horizon.

It's quite nice considering it's my favourite genre.

Oh and is the new Donkey Kong country being made by retro? DKCR is great and has just the right difficulty on most levels.

Considering it's the only next generation console out, naming anything king is pretty short sighted. If in a year or two the PS4 / Xbox One don't have as many then sure.

Trine 2

Rayman Legends

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze

New Super Luigi U

Super Mario 3D World

Sonic Lost World

Yoshi Wii U

It looks like the Wii U is getting the best next generation platformers, from both first parties and third parties. Whereas it might be strugging in other genres, it looks like platformers, 2D and 3D, is one area where the Wii U is the console to beat. What do you think?

I've only played Trine 2, and it's one of the best games I've ever played. I'll admit that that would be mostly due to it's visual fidelity, but it's the only platformer I've played that has actually kept me interested, with non repetitive puzzles. Every puzzle is different, and they are significantly more fun in co op. The story is f*cking terrible though, as is the voice acting, a bunch of cliché terribleness, but who really cares about story in a game like that.

Truth be told, I find too many games try to recreated Hollywood cinematics, poorly. For a genre that is still untouched, I find it refreshing that things are much simpler. (Super Mario 3D World might have a deviation in plot, though.)

15 years  and people still haven't learned their lesson about hyping 3D Sonic games. Unreal. I just noticed that was up there. At this point buying a 3D Sonic platformer is like playing Russian Roulette with a loaded gun without an emplty chamber. You know your gonna blow the back of your head off but you do it anyways. Why are you all not capable of learning anything?

But it's barely a platformer. It's focused on the combat way more than the platforming.

In fairness Sonic Generations and Colors were actually quite good. I am cautiously optimistic about the new Sonic game but at the same time I am prepared for it to be awful given Sonic's past. Doesn't matter cause I don't think I am personally gonna get it anyways.

Never played Colors. I rented Generations though. (Thank you Redbox.) Generations was a strange game. It was an incredible mix of good and bad and I think it was because of the level designs.

You won't find too many people that have anything bad to say about the Dreamcast. Sega did no wrong with that thing. Too bad Sega ran out of money. Most people don't know this but The Japanese Saturn had a Wipeout XL port. It was amazing. Blew away the PS1 version. The game went so fast it looked like the textures were moving backwards.

New super mario bros wiiu is just new super mario bros wii, which was just new super mario bros 2, which was just new super mario bros ds. New super luigi is just a reskinned DLC for new super mario bros. So yeah that one doesnt count considering all of those games are just about the exact same thing.

Trine 2 came out in 2011 and is out on other systems.

Rayman legends will be ps3, 360 and vita also.

The rest....eh.

Having a controller and steam alone means you get access to hundreds of new platformers a year. The PS3 has a ton of retail and digital platformers. And good thing about them is they arent just re-makes, and sequels to same old thing that nintendo always does.

As a platformer fan, it's nice to see that the Wii-U is already getting some good platformers.

I do want or am interested in pretty much all of those (except the luigi DLC). I don't know if the Wii U will be platformer king necessarily, though I could see it having some of the best platformer games, with games like Donkey Kong tropical freeze and Yoshi's Yarn.
