When games get to that point its going to be scary as heck. :P

Oh yes, it will be.
Once we've got ray tracing in real-time, heads will explode.
I'm not at all knowlegable (and will not pretend to be) in the game tech department. What is ray tracing? I think it has something the do with everything reacting to a dynamic light source but I'm not really sure if that's right.
From what I understand, it's where the virtual rays of light from a light source are actually being simulated. So the "rays" are "traced" from the light source(s) into the scene, where they reflect off surfaces and change illumination values accordingly as they would in real life, until eventually they reach the camera. Shadows look more realistic as they're actually the result of not enough light reaching an area, as in real life. Reflections look more realistic, as they're the result of light actually hitting the surface and reflecting off of it, as in real life.
Whereas at the moment, light sources in games pretty much just directly change brightness values of nearby surfaces. Shadows are calculated by analysing where the light source is, where the object is, and then rendering a shadow. Reflections are done by simply re-rendering the scene in another object.
That's my basic understanding of it anyway. Maybe someone else could understand it better. But what I do know is... it makes things look AMAZING.
