[QUOTE="ActicEdge"][QUOTE="Zhengi"] HD is used to represent the 360 and PS3 since that is their defining mark this gen. No one is actually arguing about the resolution, but the costs associated with making games for the HD consoles.Zhengi

The problem isn't about HD games though. They can be viable and cost effective if balanced with other platforms like Wii, handhelds, pc , cellphone, downloadable games etc. Its the companies poor business models that are hurting them and if they don't shape up then they will die. End of Story.

And that's what I've been arguing about in the last few pages. You're preaching to the choir, my man.

While I agree with most of the points you've raised in the thread, no one has really given a solid reason as to why companies are closing down. While I hate to preach since I don't value my opinion any higher than other peoples, I don't think that anyone had stated the point I made about the business model being broken as opposed to the HD model being broken.

I never thought the wii was killing the gaming industry. Instead they are killing video games as we know them. Im a 30 year old gaming and by the time i'm fourty 95% of the games on the market will be the casual trash they keep pumping out on the wii. WHY you ask, its because these games are CHEAP TO MAKE, and the regular gaming public (ie people who had no intrest in gaming before the wii) cant tell a peice of crap game from a hole in the ground. The wii isnt ruing gaming

its just ruining the kind of games i want to play.

These types of games were available last gen on the PS2 and the previous gen before that on the PS1. This casual trend did not begin with the Wii.

Sorry HD is a waste of time imo. Take away all the bells and whistles and we couldve gotten by with a lot more and new original games to play and cheap dev costs. No paid DLC, monstrous delays, and a much smaller % of studios shutting down over 1 bad game. We're about 2-3 years into this gen and there is still no Final Fantasy? Pathetic. InfinityMugen

PC games have been HD for over a decade now. Since PC gaming has only grown over the last decade, it obviously isn't the problem. You talk about DLC, that is something that is killing gaming, console gaming espeically. Soon you will buy the game engine with the disc and have to buy the actual game content online.

Without increases in graphical technology, the industry will stagnate, just like it would if all you did was introduce new controls. Where would we be if Sony and Nintendo never decided to go 3D and just keep everything in 2D?

Well, I probably made the point in other threads and have neglected to mention it in this one, but I think it's the nature of the market on the 360 and PS3. They have become a hit driven market in that if the game does not have high production assets, it's not very likely that it will succeed. So to continue the hits, devs have to put more and more money into their games to appeal to that particular audience. The problem with this model is that it puts a lot of risks on the devs because one failure is enough to put a dev out of business or makeit so that the dev loses the confidence of publishers having faith in them delivering that big hit. That is why the business model is broken and it appears as though this is happening mostly on the HD consoles. Companies like Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, and the Japanese devs have focused more on the DS, PSP, PC, and Wii rather than the HD consoles and they are not suffering, if any, as much as the other devs who are heavily invested in the HD consoles.

I agree with most of this but I think that just the same way these devs are ignoring the other platforms ignoring the HD consoles is also a mistake. Simply saying that taking a risk is not worth it is the thinking that got the industry in the mess its in now. The money they poor into HD development is beyond rediculous for a user base who keeps expecting more every time but completely abandoning them is foolish aswell. They need to work on smaller projects and when and only when they have the funds to build an HD game should they CONSIDER doing it.

Well, I haven't advocated abandoning the HD consoles either. I just want them to diversify more because I don't want the gaming industry to lose so many devs. Develop for the HD consoles, but also, have other projects of good to high quality on the other platforms as well. This has been my stance from the beginning.

I see. I wasn't comletely sure what your complete stance was since well, I'm new. I also feel the same way and don't want the industry to lose talent and stagnate its library simply do to feeling like HD is the only route to go. Anyways thanks for acting civil and not attacking me because I'm level 1 :)
