It's official: ME2 is nothing more than a dumbed down console shooter.

So, someone got his hands on the PC Gamer review of Mass Effect 2.

"you no longer have an inventory. its been replaced by a more abstract system, similar to a pure action game. Instead of loot drops abd containers full of equipable gear, you find technology pickups that can be researched on your ship to unlock new weapons."

"Also gone are equipment mods, replaced by castable abilities.... The miserably clunky inventory system of ME1 is no longer a problem, although the new weapon load-out and research interfaces aren't great either."

"character development(skills) has also been culled down to six or seven upgradeable skills for shepard and just four for companions. Has ME2 been dumbed down? Yeah abit, but these changes don't make it a worse game than its predecessor; it just haas some different priorities this time around,"

" The way Paragon and Renegade points are handed out could have been better, however. Often you're dealing with an issue so ambiguous that either path could be seen as good or bad, and when I'm trying to be a good guy it awards me Renegade points without telling me what it was that I did to earn them. "

" The levels are attractive, but a bit blocky and workman like. Some have inexplicable waist-high barriers that pop out of the ground when combat begins to provide cover. It's so contrived it feels like an in-joke for cover-based shooter players. "

I called it from the start, considering that ME 1 was a bad shooter and a bad RPG. Seems like this time they'll get rid of the RPG and focus on the shooting to appeal console gamers.

Cool. I'd rather it be a smoother and more seamless experience. I love RPG's, but I don't need to spend hours in menus and screwing with halfassed controls.

AAA.

No. ME2 is going to own. I don't recall being able to level up abilities or even having abilities to level up in Modern Warfare. It's a hybrid game. Not a pure shooter nor pure RPG but has the best elements of both. It worked for the first Mass Effect it'll work for the 2nd one. It's going to be great. Sorry you won't be enjoying it.

Bioware even stataed it themselves that ME2 was intended to be an Action RPG.

Although I enjoyed ME I think it is an extremely overrated game.

Bland side missions, bland planets for the most part, clumsy combat. I'm a big FPS fan so this one is important for me, I would have preferred if they made combat more like KOTOR. I mean, if you're going the shooting route you need to nail it right, otherwise it's best to stick with turn-based combat. The story was interesting but there were too many boring parts in between (driving the mako, etc.). The game felt like a chore at times.

I will skip ME2.

They gave it a higher score than the first ME so i guess that one was more dumbed down than ME2.

Are you just annoyed you can't play it or something?

Seriously. Oblivion scored hella high, yet it's just no good.

ME2, however, will get AAA because it deserves AAA greatness, not overrated mediocrity.

Actually, it sounds like ME2 will be an adventure game more then anything else. Personally, I feel that genre has been extremely lacking in the past few years, this will be a great addition.

It made me annoyed because inventory management sucked ass. None of the weapons even felt very different, they only felt a little more powerful than the last. I never felt "Oh **** YES!!!, Katana VI, this is SO awesome! I LOVE ALL THIS LOOT!".

How was this game hyped so much in the first place? I've played through and own the PC version of ME. Typical Bioware fare but with some good gunplay. Characters not even close to as cool as KOTOR.

" The levels are attractive, but a bit blocky and workman like. Some have inexplicable waist-high barriers that pop out of the ground when combat begins to provide cover. It's so contrived it feels like an in-joke for cover-based shooter players. "RichardStallman

Well the 'little' websites and many players gave it AAA as well, so I suppose what people should do is what people should have always done which is to follow your own instincts.

Why are waist high barriers in EVERY TPS these days? I mean, Uncharted 2 was probably the one cover based TPS that didn't have a ton of inexplicable barriers, but only because it was more half and half waist barriers and walls whilst other shooters pretty much primarily use them. Heck, in FPS games they show up a bit but not NEARLY as much as in most 3rd Person shooters today.

This brings me to my next question: Does Mass Effect 2 have a cover system? If they haven't talked about it, its understandable when most games do nowadays. Even 1st person games like Rainbow Six: Vegas and Killzone 2 have cover systems, and heck inFAMOUS and Batman have some form of cover system!!! But yeah, does it?

thats not my point, the simple fact is that gameplay it self is the same accross pc and console when it comes to an FPS game theres no difference one cannot be better then the other unless the gameplay it self is bad not because its a pc game or console game of that type.

Good, the inventory system was far too cluttered in the first game. The talents also were either useless to begin with, or later on were not investing in any further.

I'd normally be frustrated and unhappy about this, but in this perticular case I'm not sure it's such a bad thing. While I'd normally prefer the greater degree of complexity, those elemennt were generally poorly done in ME1. The inventory handing was horrible. there was tons of loot but it was never really very interesting. Getting a new, better gun never really made a significant diffrence to your game play. The leveling up didnt seem to offer that many viable choices.

Overall I'm not sure any of these changes would actually take anything away from ME1 that I would miss. I'd rather have seen them remake those systems, I just hope that they've managed to add more choice and complexity in other areas to replace what is lost (for example, the diffrent weapon types looks like they could introduce a lot of strategy into the game if they re done well).
