Well boys and girls, as of now if people talk about vr I do know what they're talking about, and if you haven't tried it then I suppose you don't... but you can have a pretty good idea. It just depends who explains it to you

I do need to get one thing out of the way first, anyone who ever said this is just a gimmick, a fad or something that will blow over, well, they are wrong dead wrong. When I tried this (it was psvr btw), I was immediately surprised how immersive it actually is, and I'm not talking immersive like glueing a screen to your head.

When you put it on and they start the game/demo/ app you are teleported into another world which was in my case here, me in an underwater cage slowly going down in a body of water.

I looked around just like I looked around in the real world and it didn't feel odd, weird or anything, I was just in another world, another reality.

So you could say I'm sold, and I'm sure anyone that has ever tried this is sold as well. It is the psvr I tried, and I'm not sure if other headsets are actually that good, I've heard people say they could see pixels and stuff, well I didn't see this with the psvr.

I'm defenitely going to try out other headsets and buy one asap, maybe i'll wait till august when the acer headset for windows 10 mixed reality releases. I still have to do some research which platform has the most interesting offerings (for me).

So what do you think about VR?

PREACH!

Last weekend, I had one of my lovers over and she tried Farpoint. She literally said that this is how she wants to play games, now.

Yup. Seems about right. People hate on PSVR until they actually try it. Then they love it.

@commander: No. Two people I know did, and they loved it... but all of a sudden they stopped caring about it, and now they have no interest in playing it. Weird how that works.

never hated it, just didn't know what to expect. When I was in the shop sitting on couch waiting before I could try it, I was a bit excited but also a bit worried. What if this was just not really that interesting for a 40 year old man like myself, then I'm just a 40 year old sitting with a gimmick in an electronics shop on a hot summer day.

The PSVR is by far the best headset in regards to optics and comfort. The Vive has MUCH better tracking and room scale, which only makes things better, but the screen door effect in the Vive and Rift is pretty jarring.

I'm glad you got to try it out OP!

did they buy one? it's still quite expensive, especially the pc offerings, psvr is not really breaking the bank , if you already have ps4 and can find a sale somewhere. I could buy one for 370 euro with camera

Yeah I'm glad too, this is the third time I went to that shop before I could try it, the first two times the guy who needed to set it up wasn't there lol.

I have never heard of the screen door effect but I do have to say that the psvr is really well made. The tracking seemed ok though, but when I leaned to far into something to watch it, it seems the headset lost focus , I suppose that is because the camera looses you or something.

@commander: No it was at a friend's house. The last two times they went over they didn't bother playing it lol. It seems cool af at first I'm sure, I would even think so... but after doing it 2 or 3 times you're done with it. I even remember watching the comments on Bethesda's E3 when they announced Doom and Skyrim VR all the comments flashing by were saying who cares about VR, or VR sucks, or this is boring. It will not take off. VR will be dead soon in the gaming space.

I really doubt if I can play skyrim in vr I will stop playing it, I would need an omnidirectional treadmill though, but I'm thinking about making one myself.

The problem is support, it will always struggle due to games needing to be designed different. Unless they can sell at a similar rate to consoles I just don't see devs putting in the effort. It's currently the new "it" gimmick so it gets some novelty support at the moment, but longterm is different.

@commander: VR is a neat experience and it's super great the first time you do it and you go this is the best thing ever!!

that is the exact def of a fad and gimmick, they suck you in cause it's cool. It wears off, then you play real games. RE7 is a really cool game to play in VR its not $1000 cool, if you know someone that has it you should def try it. I'm not saying there won't ever be something else really neat to play in VR, but VR is not that way or next coming of the way we will all play games. It's just neat.

That's what a VR video is lol. some are 180 some are 360. If you didn't know that, you really aren't qualified to be making your assessment. I mean not knowing the difference between a game and video is pretty dam funny.

well it was 3d rendered and it's not just looking around like in an fps, I could lean into stuff or take a closer look, even look down up, that's not 360 degrees.. and you're mocking me lmao.

the fact that I don't press a button to shoot , kick or do whatever really doesn't change much to what the experience is like.

@commander: lol see now you are just on drugs, no one wants to run around their house on a treadmill playing video games looking like an asshat.

I can see it now now, people playing COD in VR running around of their treadmills, having to really jump, crouch, aim and shoot. It would be filled with campers that don't move, or easy cause everyone would be racked 5 mins into it ??? not the future

no I'm not on drugs man, i really want to do this, the problem is that I can't really get one, the guy that was building this had a kickstarter project but then sold it to some chinese company, which is probably going to use it in arcades

www.virtuix.com

now there are other which are in development, and others which cost way too much money, so I thought about building one myself, it has been done before by several guys online, of course it looks pretty rudimentary, but it is workable, I even did some research myself and I already know what type of plastic I would use for the ground.

Of course I would be much happier if I can buy something like this, I would happily pay 500$ which was the price for the production virtuix omni.

Yep, seeing is believing, as they say. Most of those talking sh*t on the PSVR around here have never actually touched it, let alone placed it on their head. They just want to say "it's a flop! it's a flop! it's a flop!" over and over like they're a broken wind-up toy. And then there are others that play some crappy tech demo or garbage game and declare that it represents the quality of the headset, which absolutely is not the case.

Anyway, happy to hear you like it! Some good/great game recommendations: EVE: Valkyrie; Dirt Rally VR; Drive Club VR; Resident Evil 7; Thumper; Rez Infinite; Until Dawn: Rush of Blood; Farpoint; Star Trek: Bridge Crew; Mortal Blitz; Werewolves Within (if you like sit-down group games)....and lots of others. And as you've probably seen from E3, PSVR has a ton of support heading down the road. There are game announcements being made all the time, many of which were not even mentioned at E3. Good VR times!

I'm glad you got to try it for yourself and form an opinion. I was the same way myself before I tried it. I thought it was gonna be a fad too, and that all changed when I tried it for the first time at a local GameStop. It was a mind-blowing experience for me and convinced me that VR had a bright future ahead of it. It won't be replacing regular TV gaming but it definitely has a future alongside TV gaming.

A lot of the blind hate VR gets is from ignorant people that haven't tried it. Due to the high price and few public demos of VR available a lot of people haven't got to try a high-end VR experience and because of that they try to imagine what it's like and think it's shit even before they try it. Couple that with the fact that VR games are impossible to demonstrate on a 2D screen or stage demo and you get a lot of ignorant opinions about it.

I've tried all the VR headsets out there and I was convinced to get the PSVR instead of the Vive because of the comfort, the lack of screen door Effect, and its better game library for me. PSVR is surprisingly competent compared to the other VR headsets despite it's cheaper price and paired with a Pro it delivers surprisingly good image quality. I think it's the best of the high-end VR headsets so far. The others are great but they aren't as finely engineered as the PSVR and it shows. Sony really did their homework with PSVR.

@commander: amen. I work closely with vr for my job and will freely admit it's got a lot of room to improve, but it flat out is NOT just strapping a screen to you head. If that's the only experience a particular game offers, that's 100% on the dev phoning it in

Same here. I was sold when I first used the Occulus Rift Dev Kit 1. That made me feel like I was going to vomit and I was still convinced it was the future.

Glad you enjoyed it. I think a lot of the hate for VR does come from people who view it similarly to the Kinect/motion controls fad. I think people don't realize just how much VR changes the feeling of immersion in a game world, and what a radical change it is from flat screen gaming. This is not just waggling your hands, although that is possible in many VR games. Some of my favorite VR games actually use a standard DS4 controller.

Everything feels different with the headset on. When I play the Battlefront X-Wing demo, it actually feels like I am IN a spacecraft, not just playing a flight simulator. This also has a funny effect when playing Re7 - the game is absolutely frightening in VR, and I need to take breaks not because of motion sickness but because there's a limit to what my heart can handle from all the jump scares, which really feel like they're happening to ME.

It's a lot of fun and I hope the tech continues to grow and develop. It will require support from people like us.

You think PSVR is cool, seek out and try a Vive. Being able to walk around and interact brings it to another level.

Glad you enjoyed it, VR may be slow to start but it's got immense potential.

I really can't see myself playing a game like re7 without some sort of omnidirection threadmill.

I just walk/run in place. It's pretty easy to do. Plus, after multiple hours-long sessions, it keeps my tummy flat.

that actually doesn't seem like a bad idea, have you played farpoint?

I tried vr for the first time recently - playing Robo Recall with Oculus Touch. It was one of the most amazing gaming experiences of my life and it sold me on vr in 2 minutes! I wish i had the money for my own headset

I'm really happy VR got some presence at this years E3, if it didn't I would say it is dead, as I haven't seen much PR for it at all this whole year, almost like it was forgotten.

What happens if we only see VR at game shows? It will die, and quickly. I won't buy one because apart from the price, it seems like no one cares.

i've tried it and i hated

The resolution is garbage and visuals are crap.Full of aliasing and jaggies. It's so ugly and disgusting it literally makes me wanna throw up.

The vive isn't much better either.

4k+ resolution is needed for a screen that sits this close to your eyes

I have not tried VR, but the idea of it is really fucking cool. I'm just waiting for it to become a bit cheaper and more convenient until I jump in.

I had to hold off on Farpoint. I was waiting for the dev to patch in left-handed use for the aim, as I'm a left-hander. Thankfully, they've done so. Now I just have to get my hands on a Farpoint aim controller bundle (the aim is really, really awesome), which is impossible right now as it is sold out EVERYWHERE.

Anyway, yeah, walking/running in place works fine. And it is a great workout if you stick with it. Just make sure you have a fan blowing on you so your lenses don't get fogged. ;)

I'm always surprised on how people can get so overwhelmingly positive about PSVR when clearly the technology is not there yet, at least on console.
