Nintendo revealed that the 3DS will finally become profitable in the first half of its next fiscal year begining April 2012.

Nintendo was previously selling the system at a loss since the price cut.

Iwata assured Investors that the situation will change in the next fiscal year.

"I would like to begin with the product profitability of the Nintendo 3DS hardware, which has affected our profit the most for the current fiscal year."

"Let me first inform you that, in the first half of the next fiscal term, we are now anticipating to get out of the situation that we sell the hardware below cost."Satoru Iwata

Since the price cut they have sold ~10 million 3DS's, that's a lot of lost money. Good to know they will get back in the money I guess, put that into good games for it :D

Fix't. :P I think that'll really push some Vita numbers here in the USA. Then again, 3DS will be getting crappy ports like the DS was.

well thats nice. perhaps ninty should consider going on with a similar tactic with the wiiu launch. initally sell it at a small loss (nothing like 200 quid a pop) with the aim of selling it at a profit by arpil-may 2013. if they can turn an unintentional price drop and selling at a loss around as quickly as they have with the 3DS then maybe they can turn it around even quicker if they plan for it now with the wiiu.

That would be silly. They are aggressive when it comes to the handheld market because

a) Put Sony out of the handheld business b) Ensure 3rd party publishers that 3DS is a healthy platform because c) Apple is a big threat, most publishers where starting to announce iOS games and put their 3DS plans on hold, but that has changed today because of Nintendo's decisions.

They have now established 3DS, it's selling above DS levels currently and it has strong momentum going in 2012, additionally they seemingly have gotten their hands on the MH franchise. It's done, they succeeded.

They don't have to worry about anything like this on their home console front imo. There, besides their push to get next gen multiplats and good online to try and grab the CoD/GTA dudebros, they will have key titles (must-haves) that will drive the install base. A Pictionary game for instance will become the hottest selling game of its year. They don't have to be as aggressive on this front, profit from the get go is preferable. Reggie has also given out vibes that indicate it won't come cheap.

MH4 is set to release in Japan, Pokemon has been MIA for some time and they announced a 2D Mario coming this year.

This is besides a really impressive lineup including RE, MGS, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3D and some mid-tier Nintendo games like Kid Icarus, Luigi's Mansion 2, Paper Mario, Animal Crossing......

Reality is, a system sells more in its second year than first, which means it will sell more than 15 million units in 2012, so we're looking at a userbase of 40m units worldwide, by the end of 2012. That's insane.

fix'd :P but i really don't get why people think CoD will be a system seller. it's already available on every freaking system ever made (hell i bet there's an amiga version of it). as far as i know, most people don't buy more than one version of each game, and most people already have one of the 5 billion systems of choice to play CoD on. there is no reason to choose the vita version, with inferior controls and graphics (not that you can notice with CoD :P), over the other ones.

People still buy it. There's a reason DS got a portable version of CoD every f**king year. People actually buy those.

^ "it's portable" isn't a good enough reason to turn it into a system seller. yes the DS version sells (infinitely less than the console versions, but it sells), but it sells on an already popular system. they're not trying to advertise CoD DS as a system seller, it's more like "just another game on the DS library".

Handhelds are big in the kid's market. CoD is built for kids. CoD pushes huge numbers. It's a match made in heaven.

It's also getting a Bioshock game. I'm getting one no matter what now. Just not at, or near launch.

kids also don't have much control over when they can get a new system. and even kids would be like "i already bought for my xbox". again, if the vita was popular, it would sell, but if it ends up like it is in japan, then CoD won't help. just look how well the "it's a console, but portable" strategy worked for the PSP for the first couple years. hell even now people make jokes about it being the world's most expensive paperweight.

Any portable game is going to be inferior in ways to a home console versions. Even mario is top seller on N home and portable consoles, so people must want to play the same type of games on portable or home console. Games I play didn't change just because I went to portables.

They're highly influential. Kids wouldn't be like that either. It could be a killer app in the USA/EU. "I already bought it for my Xbox." Well, that certainly didn't stop them from getting MKWii and NSMBW even though they had them for their DS. Also, Vita still lacks killer apps in Japan. Nintendo took them all away.

PSP still sold very well and was successful, despite the insanely high piracy. The most expensive paperweight is still a 360 though.

What sells can change like people have said they weren't interested in shooters on psp but said they would be with dual analogs. Psp also only got the old style cod not a modern warfare.

Looks like it doesn't cost under 100 bucks to make after all. Or better said - even if it does, there are still other expenses.

I bought CoD: WaW for the DS as an inexpensive experiment; I agree wholeheartedly that the CoD arguement holds NO water and I see the same regarding a CoD for the PSV. I think Bruno means Ridge Racer or WipEout. THOSE are the handheld system sellers, not CoD due to the differing levels of experience and gameplay.

PSP spent 2-3 years being a PS2 port machine. no one liked it. and there's a huge difference between "getting the new version of a game in the series, exclusive to a different system" and "getting the inferior port that is being released at the same time as the superior versions, for about the same price".

system sellers have to be games that are superb, widely known (aka large userbase/fanbase), and exclusive to that system. CoD is a port, there is nothing to it.

CoD Vita is an unproven factor.

It won't sell just because, look at CoD on Wii.

Psp only got 2 million but I think this gen will sell more of them with 2 analogs and more capabilites(level Size, etc). Online was already fun on psp like resistance had 8 player so if they could get that up to 16 that would be nice.

If the remote play work, I wonder if peeps will just skip the Vita version and just remote play Call of Duty lol.

In all seriousness, I do expect Vita's to push sales once COD launches for it.

They are already sitting on over $10 billion cash burning holes in their pockets, I can't imagine how much more (and how much more desparate gaming sites will get when they don't have negative Nintendo news to report) cash they will have when its turning a larger profit, though I still doubt they sell it for a loss Iwata has only really said they are making losses based on what they thought they were going to make off each 3DS during this fiscal year, coz they planned on the $250 sticking til the end of the fiscal year, which of course the 3DS will be "Proftiable" in April, when this last fiscal year, ends.

Once again, the 3DS and Vita will both receive COD, if anything they will both get shafted as Activison would rather make it for the iPhone than traditional handhelds. COD on Vita won't be as big of a deal as people think. I'd guess like 2 million units sold max, since the DS, PSP, Wii, and PC versions all sell substianitially less than the PS3, 360 versions

Ya I know about that, what I'm saying is, COD nerds will go gaga that you can play a good quality COD game on the go which will prompt them to go buy Vitas and thus raise sales. BUT, thats where your statement comes in and you are right, we don't know just how big of a deal it is and whether it will even pass the 2 million mark.

Title is misleading.

It should read: 3DS to become profitable sometime in Jun - Sep timeframe.
