BTW, if I were Bethesda or EA, I'd be on the phone ASAP with this guy to start a new studio. Especially Bethesda with the failure of Rogue Warrior and mediocre Wet.

EA seems to be trying a new approach as Bioware has had nothing to complain about. Zeschuk and Muzyka seem very content.

[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"]

[QUOTE="Verge_6"] If short, laughable campaigns coupled with unbalanced, broken multiplayer is your thing, hey, go for it.Brownesque

Hey, I'm not trying to say you're wrong. I'm just saying that the consumer base still thinks it's quality for the most part, and the reviewers still think it's quality for the most part, so for all intents and purposes it's still quality.

No, not for all intents and purposes. Modern Warfare 2 was a very high budget, highly polished blockbuster release, and the critics and gamers creamed their pants alike when it came out because it was flashy and sparkly. Unfortunately some of us can see through the luster and sheen because we've been playing serious, competitive games for quite a bit longer and fail to see the appeal. The game's multiplayer mode was flat-out ridiculous and unacceptable to anyone who likes a genuine competitive multiplayer experience. The reviewers simply dropped the ball and they were unwilling to see the glaring faults....the huge bugs that are still being uncovered or new ones being patched into existence today, the terrible net code, the ridiculous and unbalanced multiplayer leveling/unlocks system, the way the entire game has devolved into a middle school fragfest.... Frankly if the reviewers are willing to give it high marks it just solidifies my working theory which is that game reviewers take production values first and foremost into consideration when reviewing games, everything else is secondary....gameplay mechanics, bugs, balance, what have you.

Okay, a better way of phrasing that would be "for the purposes of this discussion". The "actual" quality of IW's games is irrelevant. The percieved quality is what matters from a business perspective, and I don't think the majority of consumers have started thinking that IW's product is lower in quality because of some multiplayer bugs.

And Activision is the publisher of Infinity Ward's games.

Yes, I know. They take part of the loss on crap like Wet and RW. They basically own the IP. The developer typically just develops the game if it's a subsidiary of the publisher (which is nearly 100% of the time now with big publishers.)

From what it seems like in SiKh22's link the situation is getting intense. First West gets fired. The staff still doesn't know where Vince Zampella is. And there are security people outside their room. Sounds to me it's more like a hostile takeover than a simple dispute...

What the what? Activision already owns IW, and I don't think "hostile takeover" means what you think it means.

ctrl-f for "Infinity Ward" and read the whole paragraph on the first hit.

Well until this 'insubordination' comes with details there isn't much to say on it really. I doubt Activision would so easily fire people on Infinity Ward for a small reason. And no matter how much you may love IW you can't say they should be able to do such as they please.

Yes i think there are always some rules, cause publishers normally lend the developer the money to develop their games... right? Or is that all backwards.

Yeah, they fund development so the devs don't have to pay everything from their own pockets, and because of that they have a share of the profits from the game's sales.

It would be funny if a large chunk of IW staff would leave and start their own new studio, which would create a game that would kill CoD.

It already happened once with Medal of Honor (that's how CoD was born) and history likes to repeat itself

This is to be expected. Activision don't need them anymore. They have earneda billion dollar franchise of them, now it's time they move on.

Activision is kicking their cash cow dev, and keeping the rights to the game. How is this not similar to what MS did? Right business decision anyway, the name is what sells, plus Im sure they suspect the CoD name is at its peak.

In essence, this is a GOOD thing. Hopefully the poor sods of IW will regroup (should more of them resign), form another dev studio, and begin to make quality titles again.

Right now it seems that they're surgically extracting "insubordinates" from IW, not shutting the whole place down. Most of the staff will probably remain, and Activision will still be able to put out Infinity Ward-developed CoD games - they'll just have more cooperative people in positions of leadership. My pet theory is that Activision wanted to put Treyarch and IW on a subscription-based COD project, perhaps merging them in the process. Key IW people told Kotick to go **** himself, and now they're being replaced.

I hadn't read up on this royalties thing. Wasn't aware that IW was only under contract with Acti.

Maybe this is more about an acquisition, as the article says.

Sounds like theyre cutting off the head, in other words the guys that are responsible for creating IW. I suspect where they go, the rest will go. Should be interesting to see what happens. Kotick is ruthless it seems. A ruthless clown lookin mofo.
