Yeah, sort of comes off that way doesn't it? I haven't played it nor am I really interested in playing it so I have no opinion on it. However I seriously doubt games like GW2 or Dishonored or even ME3 (including it's original atrocious ending) weren't better choices as game of the year...

Journey winning "Downloadable Game of the Year" seems more appropriate... or even something like "Artistic Graphics of the Year", you know? Sure I won't deny that it may be good or great or amazing... but GOTY? No way...

The only way our industry can grow is if devs and reviewers simply stop giving a f*ck about what the rest of the world says. That's what TV, movies and even books did and they seemed to have turned out just fine.

This is pretty harsh. From even my friend who certainly plays a lot of games but isn't super passionate about games themselves said the game was really good. A great experience. Do I think its deserving of GOTY? Well frankly with school I play too few games to make that call but is it as terrible as you make it sound? Prob not. If Journey is the hipster choice then so be it, do we really need another Mass Reject winning all these GOTY awards or a super safe Uncharted 2 again?

So is this an outrage because one website that you're on didn't pick what you qualify as worthy? If so that's just shallow man. If its an outrage for why you're saying than you probably should acknowledge all the places journey didn't win as well. The hipster choice is the hipster choice, regardless of quality. Really, what does Journey do for the medium?

Spec Ops: The Line deconstructs an entire genre and spawned serious criticism and discussion within the industry. Not GOTY.

The Walking Dead set a new standard for writing and choice, and showed how badly Mass Effect failed. Not GOTY.

Dishonored proved new IPs can work within a generation and put a strong emphasis on player choice that actually mattered. Not GOTY.

Guild Wars 2 proved that MMOs don't need a F2P Pay 2 Win model, made improvements to WoW's template (making the first meaningful editions to the genre in nearly 8 years that haven't come from Blizzard), and pretty much destroyed the subscription model. Not GOTY.

Hmm I don't know. It's sad that you can see all the good in those games you praised, but can't allow even an aorta of positives for Journey. I don't think I have a personal GOTY, but I can at least allow that people see a lot in Journey. In the GS video alone, they talk about the art and direction and emotional attachment to the 'journey'. I remember clearly getting struck by one of those flying things and having my scarf shorten, making travel harder again. That was fantastic to me. Plus there are small areas of exploration in the game too, so it's not all that bad. Co-op was cool too.

Plus, I don't see how TWD or Spec Ops winning couldn't be labelled a 'hipster' choice too.

Then again, I kinda hate the ME series too, so maybe I'm cherry-picking.

I see, I don't follow reviews these days and I despise IGN so meh but still. They aren't gonna fall in line with your opinion everytime, that's just fact. I still hate RDR and would have preferred Starcraft 2 or SMG2 to win GOTY that year. (Urgh, rockstar makes such crappy games) Anyway, your problem with Journey was it was short and not really a game. An experience in my mind is a part of gaming too. Granted I feel that there has to be stellar gameplay to make it a great game but a great gaming experience is always awesome. There is something about the first Necromorph you dismember in dead space, or the snowy train sequence in Uncharted 2, or the first goomba you stomp on in Super Mario Brothers, or the first time you see Satrorl Marsh at night in Xenoblade that stay with you for as long as you game. Those are gaming experiences the same way we have movie experiences or literature experiences. Its important to the medium. It really isn't definitive of being a game though. Terrible games can do that too. So the line has to be drawn, is it a game for what you as a player control with the ability to win and lose, or is it simply a sight to behold?

I'm a wii and ps3 gamer, but I can accept Journey winning. Journey is a symbol of how stale this gen has gotten. It won because it issomething new. Literally every other choice is an excellent game but also remarkably unremarkable. They did things better than games in the past, but are not pushing the boundaries of like previous GOTY winners did. GOTY this year had to end up being a weird choice. It's almost like we got a lot of great filler material this year but no golden games along the lines of Skyrim, MGS4, Demons Souls, or Mario Galaxy.

I'm currently getting a bad vibe from GTA5 but hopefully that game will breath a last breath of life into this limping gen.

I have a ps+ subscription and I just downloaded the game for a discounted price of 8$ .. will play it first before deciding on anything but it seems a great game to play going by several websites giving it GOTY :)
